Why DAREDEVIL Season 2 Debuting Opposite BATMAN V SUPERMAN Is Smart

Now it's Netflix Vs. Theater Chains

This coming March will prove to be a good one for fans as Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is set to open on March 25th 2016. That date has now been staked out by the second season of Daredevil. It’s a bold move for Netflix and Marvel to debut the second season opposite a massive Hollywood blockbuster, but is it also a smart one?

While it’s difficult to say if the two are at risk of drawing a substantial financial stake out of either project, Daredevil gives itself the benefit of being readily available to people in their homes, on their phones, etc. Meanwhile Batman V Superman requires buying a ticket for what will be a packed theater. So already, it’s more accessible to people. Especially with the low cost of Netflix.

Putting these two projects opposite of eachother makes it a real draw. Do you watch Daredevil’s second season or Batman V Superman? Considering the high critical praise that Daredevil received in it’s first season, it stands to reason that people are likely more interested in seeing Matt’s story evolve over seeing Batman fight Superman.

This is why Daredevil will ultimately come out winning. Man of Steel’s lukewarm reception means that many fans are more concerned with seeing a continuation of that great serialized story found in Daredevil then they are seeing the bombastic moments of Batman V Superman.

It’s entirely possible that Daredevil’s second season will receive strong negative reaction, or that Batman V Superman will receive a negative reaction; however if we’re taking both projects as they are, I have a strong feeling people would rather invest in Daredevil then they would in Batman V Superman. Especially considering the lower barrier of entry.

What are you basing this on ? Again MoS was " lukewarm " for critics but most people liked it enough for it to make over 700 million dollars . Plus DD2 can be watched at anytime once it's released ( same could be true for BVS ) but will it really matter ?

Smart move on Marvel's part because people will remember the release date of Daredevil S2 better. I don't think this will dramatically affect BvS's numbers because most diehard fans will end up seeing both anyway. Hurting BvS is by no means Marvel's intention though.

People on this site need to realize that BvS doing well helps the superhero genre in general, as does the MCU doing well.

Wait, you honestly think people wanna see Matt Murdock's growth as a character over Superman beating the ever living shit out of Batman? C'mon man, get your head out of Marvel's ass, they don't pay your bills.

I honestly doubt that Daredevil will draw away potential customers just because its first season garnered critical acclaim. This is Batman and Superman being on the silver screen for the first goddamn time. No way in hell is a Netflix show, no matter how good it is, going to stop hundreds of thousands of people from going to theatres to watch Batman v Superman.

Daredevil will not impact negatively Batman v Superman at all.

Batman v Superman will not impact negatively Daredevil at all.

They are different mediums - one is an event, the other very convenient. People will do both.

If anything, it will be a positive impact on both. The geek hype will raise both, plenty of room in the playground for all.

Folks are making WAAAAYYY too big a deal out of this!!

Like season one, Season two of Daredevil has 13 episodes, so approx. 13 hours.

You're telling me, over the course of the weekend watching both isn't entirely possible??

Think about it this way, the folks most looking forward to Daredevil will watch as much and as soon as they possibly can. So, if you do the math, they'd clearly be able to watch both. However, not everyone will watch it this way!! For a variety of reasons, folks can't/won't as much/soon as possible, life happens.

What I believe is the most likely/common scenario:

Folks will start their Daredevil, after a few episodes take a break, get some food, maybe run some errands/get shit done, go see BvS, come home & continue their binge.

Just one man's opinions.

I don't think the two would affect each other, despite MOS dividing opinion (I loved it), plenty of people will want to see Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman together.

Heck you can watch some DD in the morning, go watch BVS and then watch more DD.

It is a smart move, if they can delay people from going on opening week, and then the movie isn't well-received, some of those people will lose their hype and not go at all.

It's nobody on this website though. They don't care about hardcore comic fans that will pay for both regardless.

You guys do realize the Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather fight came out the same weekend as Avengers: Age of Ultron, and yet AoU still made 190+ million domestic? Pacquiao vs Mayweather was MUCH more hyped than ANY Netflix show, like, ever?

Plus, most people don't immediately watch the shows the weekend it comes out. On top of that, Netflix has 40+ million subscribers. First off, not even half of them will watch it opening weekend. Second, even if they did, they still could go to the film.

Trust me, the BvS box office will not be hurt whatsoever by Daredevil releasing.
