Why I Am No Longer Looking forward to BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE

Editorial Opinion

Filed Under: Batman vs. Superman

Unlike certain individuals I do not have an "allegiance" to any one studio. I do wish that Marvel would get the rights to some of their characters back from Fox and Sony such as Fantastic Four and Spider-Man but I do not necessarily have a favorite studio. With that being said I do not prefer Marvel over Sony or DC over Fox. If a movie is good I have no problem admitting it. This editorial will focus mostly on DC and how they have lost both my faith and money. I, as most comic book movie fans, have longed for the day when we would see Batman and Superman on the same screen together for the first time. However my hopes were quickly destroyed by a single casting decision. Now I know what your thing "Yeah Mike I agree Batfleck sucks!" well..... No actually I didn't mind Ben Affleck was cast as Batman it's been a long time since Daredevil, which wasn't horrible but wasn't great either, so I think he deserves a chance to redeem himself. No my problem is with Jesse Eisenberg!

Ever since he was cast as the iconic villain known as Lex Luthor I have spent days hoping it was all just a bad and overly drawn out April Fool's joke alas the longer it has gone the more I realize that it is no joke and my sadness has turned into fan boy rage! The first big problem I have with Jesse is his age and yes we have all figured out by now that he is the same age as Henry Cavill but that doesn't excuse the fact that despite his real age being 30 he looks like he's 17. How do you expect people to consider Eisenberg a threat to someone like Cavill when he looks like a guy that most people would have picked on in High School? His age is not the only problem however. The fact of the matter is this: He simply isn't that great of an actor. Now again you people maybe thinking "wait a second didn't he win a best actor award?" yes well he won an award for playing Columbus in Zombie Land...... No it wasn't Zombie Land? Oh then it must have been his role as James in Adventureland..... No that isn't right. Oh yes it was for playing the same exact person he was in those two movies for The Social Network. Do you see where I'm getting at? Eisenberg has not proven himself to be an extraordinary actor. If anything he has proven himself to be a one trick pony and considering what that one trick is, being a socially awkward adolescent, it will prove disastrous for a role like Lex Luthor. I'd much rather see Eisenberg team up with Michael Cera in a coming of age comedy. That, I think, would be box office gold! But his role as Lex will kill the movie as soon as he appears on screen. Eisenberg is not a box office draw and thank god he doesn't have to be the title alone will bring people to see this movie but the fact of the matter is this: While I enjoyed Man of Steel many others did not and their skepticism has only been increased with bad casting decisions by Warner Bros for this epic and important film. I'd much rather Warner Bros brought back Kevin Spacey at least when he played Lex I stood at awe of his presence despite the fact that he was in a really poor Superman Returns.

If you are excited for Batman Vs. Superman then fantastic! I am happy for you but I'll be waiting for Redbox to see this movie. Besides it could be worse. At least Fox isn't trying another Fantastic Four movie right?..... Oh

I'll end the article with a photo of what could have/should have been

Ok, and your point is?? After Affleck and Gadot were cast I was honestly shocked they were more pissed about Eisenberg. He is great casting, able to play ruthless and shallow(social network) cocky and flashy(now you see me) and yes, comedic(zombieland) is the fact he's young looking seriously what's most upsetting?

He's gonna kill it, just as Shannon, Hardy, Strong, Ledger, and every other villain that dc has cast has (minus swartzenager, but was one problem in a movie doomed from the start

I was willing to sympathise until you posted the Bryan Cranston picture. I dislike the casting but I'd take Eisenberg over Cranston as Luthor any day.

1. Bryan would be just a boring choice of Lex Luthor since it would just be Walter White 1.2. If it would not be for Breaking Bad, fans would never want him as Lex..

2. Has you seen the Double? If you would read Superman Birthright and see The Double, you would not doubt Jessie as Lex Luthor, rather see the casting as casting choice of genius

@Insomnia
He was magnificent as Simon James and James Simon in The Double.

Eisenberg in The Double is the same character in a different mood.
He always acts the same and that's not something I want to see in Luthor, that doesn't change the fact that it could be great.

Cuba Gooding Jr won an Oscar but no one would call him a great actor these days.

I've sparred with plenty of women Gadot's size.

They will knock you on your ass if you let 'em. Trust me. A lot of them are some of the most effective fighters I've ever seen.

I disagree, he's a great actor and I'm looking forward to seeing his take on Lex.... I also feel that he can definitely take on darker roles....

I will simply say this. I think Jessie will kill it.

And his role in Social Network? He played the smartest man in the room, in every scene, in both subtle and not-subtle ways. That's Lex. He's the smartest man in the room, and he'll tell you that in his own ways.

That's why Jessie fits. The ability to portray intelligence in multiple ways.

People point to "The Social Network" and "Now You See Me" and "The Double" as evidence Eisenberg can play a bad guy or something other than his usual character. He did fine but he's no Lex Luthor. To be honest there's really not much difference in his portrayals in the 3 films.

@DrKinsolving

WAITRESS: (Turns to Lex) And you?

LEX: Eggs.

WAITRESS: We don't serve eggs in the evening.

Lex calmly looks up at the waitress, seemingly right through her.

WAITRESS: Yes, Mr. Luthor.

I don't feel too strongly about Eisenberg one way or the other. That's just the way I am, though. I tend to regard a lot of news or announcements with complete apathy until I see more. I'm just not emotional about these things.

I'm hoping he'll surprise everyone, though. I'm generally optimistic about CBMs.

The only problem in the casting department is Gadot.
