BIRDS OF PREY Star Mary Elizabeth Winstead Describes The Film As "Funny" And Totally 1990s

DC's slate post-2019 has been the topic of much excitement for comic book movie fans. Coming out 2020, Birds of Prey will be the first mainstream comic book film to focus on a female superhero team . . .

As part of a huge push to bring Harley Quinn to the DCEU's forefront, Birds of Prey is tasked with expanding the character in addition to introducing several other anti-heroines, one of which is Mary Elizabeth Winstead's The Huntress.

In an extensive interview with The New York Times, 10 Cloverfield Lane's Mary Elizabeth Winstead described the tone of the film and the team's dynamic, citing a very specific decade as an indicator.

In Birds of Prey I play this assassin who’s been trained since childhood. It’s all women and genuinely funny and weird. It feels from the ’90s, in the best way.

Hearing that the film will be funny and weird is always welcome. As for the 1990's comment, it seems unlikely that the movie will actually be set during that time period and will instead take influence from the style/music associated with the era.

Another superhero film that touched on the decade recently was Captain Marvel, which also focused on a female protagonist. The question remains: which film will include more Blockbuster Videos?

Birds of Prey hits theaters February 2020.

I'm assuming this film will be as good as Ghostbuster (2016) with a great RT rating.

@mastakilla39 -

Why is that? 🤔
That's a strange thing to say.

Maybe you're being sarcastic but I see a lot of people claiming that it's an all-female lead film therefore it's supposed to be as bad as another completely unrelated all-female lead film. The problem with this position is that we haven't officially seen any of the actual movie yet. It's a completely biased and unfair position to take so soon.

As far as Ghostbusters (2016) goes, it was not a "good" movie. It was still better than Ghostbuster 2 which I think was terribly nonsensical with its "emotional slime", collective amnesia in NY to the entire events of the first film, and a villain that wanted to be a vulnerable baby for some reason. It KILLED the franchise for decades! 💀

This is why I think the whole "girls ruined my Ghostbusters" thing is pure melodrama. The franchise destroyed itself before Ghostbuster (2016) even tho that movie was mediocre.

@Humperdink - to continue your point, ghostbusters also got a lot of hate when it was announced as staring all women. I remember that being the most annoying thing back then since by the time the first trailers came out there was just the largest fight between feminists calling sexist everywhere and ghostbusters "fans" who refused to accept any kind of change. It got to the point where you couldnt say anything positive or negative about it lest you bring about the wrath of one of those 2 groups.

It looks like a music video from a pseudo-grunge reject band, so that makes sense. If only it looked any good!

i get why they're doing this movie but it feels so forced .... strong women characters on screen weren't shown like i woke this morning and i'm hardcore .... examples like Ripply or linda hamilton's character were put in horrid situation , and you felt their dread. but the great thing about them was finding a way pushing thru things, when everyone else couldn't . hell i wasn't even a fan of Captain Marvel like that but she had some of those piece in her film. i really hope this is isn't teared down of decent characters to do woman movement for a $ :( ........

but it feels so forced

You have not seen even a trailer of the movie but it already "feels forced"? How do you know?

Another question: Did "Ocean's Eleven" "feel forced" to you? If not, why?

My expectations are real low...this way a decent movie will actually surprise me.

OT: El Mayimbe says that Pattinson and Hoult are screen-testing this week for Batman. Then again, he's got a pretty spotty at best track record.

I can't see any scenario in which the Pattman doesn't completely destroy Hoult as far as auditioning goes. He just got Oscar buzz off of Cannes too.
