RAMPAGE Star Dwayne Johnson Teases That DC's BLACK ADAM Solo Film Is Expected To Begin Production In 2019

It's been quite a long time our last update on Black Adam's solo film. We've been hearing tons about Shazam!, which is currently in production, rather than his signature nemesis, but Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has just changed that.

Recently, Johnson sat down for some interviews whilst promoting his next film RampageYahoo was able to speak with the star about his upcoming work in the DC Extended Universe as Black Adam, and it was there Johnson said he thinks the film could start shooting by next year:

The script came in, it’s great, we’re working on it. I’m very excited about it. If things come together in the way we anticipate them coming together, that feels like a 2019 movie — in production.

It sounds like screenwriter Adam Sztykiel has been busy, if the script for Black Adam has indeed been penned. Sztykiel was brought on to tackle the film in November of last year after Johnson worked with him on Rampage. The actor announced the screenwriter had been tapped for the project on Twitter, along with telling fans that he feels a connection to to the titular character deep in his bones.

Few details about Black Adam have been released officially, but Johnson is not shy about his hopes for the movie. In the past, the actor has called the DC icon a “complex and gritty anti-hero.” Also back in November of 2018, during a chat with We Got This Covered, the actor revealed why he felt Black Adam was such an appealing role to play:

I love the idea that is backstory is that he starts off as a slave. I feel like when somebody is oppressed that way but has a bigger ambition and a greater belief than the oppression that’s holding him down - that’s a powerful place to be. [His] family getting killed, coming back from that; There’s a lot of elements about Black Adam that have attracted me for a very, very, very, very, very long time.

Shazam! releases in theaters on April 5, 2019 while Black Adam is yet recieve an official release date.
Are you looking forward to this Johnson-led ant-hero film? What do you think about the above teased 2019 production date?

One thing that annoys me about The Rock is that he makes everything about him. I wouldn't be surprised if DC/WB originally wanted Black Adam to be introduced in the Shazam movie but Dwayne was like "na, if you want me then my character gets his own film".

@bcom - ya I heard that!! Black Adam gets his own movie before Batman?? Because why? Because the Rock? This is going to the be the biggest DCEU misstep since Suicide Squad.

Well at least he's knowledgeable about the character he'll be playing.

Maybe they could make it a sequel to Shazam if it's successful? I'm worried it'll turn into another BvS-type film though.
