BLACK PANTHER Actor Bluntly Addresses The GODS OF EGYPT "Whitewashing" Controversy

Chadwick Boseman, who plays Thoth in Gods Of Egypt, has weighed in on the controversy surrounding the casting of predominantly white actors in the roles of mythological Egyptian deities. "People don't make $140 million movies starring black and brown people."

Alex Proyas' fantasy adventure, Gods Of Egypt, came under so much fire for the perceived "whitewashing" of the main roles that both the director and Lionsgate actually issued an apology for not making more of an effort to diversify the picture. Now, one of the few actors of color in the movie, Chadwick Boseman, has shared his thoughts on the matter during an interview with GQ - and he doesn't hold back.

Boseman says after reading the script, one of the reasons he took the role of Thoth was specifically to add some diversity to the proceedings.

"I generally try to tune things like press controversy out, but some people around me told me, ‘Hey... you might wanna look at this.’ And when I originally was approached with the script, I thought this [critique] might come up, I really did. And I'm thankful that it did, because actually, I agree with it. That's why I wanted to do it, so you would see someone of African descent playing Thoth, the father of mathematics, astronomy, the god of wisdom. And in the movie, I actually outnumber the other gods in the movie, literally and figuratively. It's hard for people to know that without seeing it. But yeah, people don't make $140 million movies starring black and brown people. [Shakes head.]"

Boseman will also get to put his stamp on one of the first black superheroes when he suits up as Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War next year, and you can see for yourselves what he brings to the role of Thoth when Gods Of Egypt hits theaters on February 26.

This movie will be amazing and groundbreaking. Black Panther will be huge after Civil War, and his solo flick will be huge as well.

Pretty bold statement coming from the star of a potential new $100+ million comic book character franchise based around a black character.

Nivekian, a fact isn't a "bold statement". Yeah, it looks like Marvel will do just that with the solo Black Panther movie and more power to 'em - but they'll be the first.

So white Egyptian gods are bad in fantasy films but black Norse gods are good and screams diversity. Race hustlers are never satisfied.

It not about race it's about the may have market.

Studios want to make money and if the felt they could do that with lesser known actors they would cast them.

I guess dental wasn't available.

Fundamentally different. marvel changed an already marvel adapted character black. They were not changing the true Norse god black. They were essentially changing their own incarnation of the character. Gods of Eygpt on the other hand are white-washing the literal mythology.

He basically agreed the film is "whitewashed", then tried to be slick and say his inclusion is a counter to the "whitewashing". So, because he's playing Black Panther, he's speaking the truth and Gods of Egypt looks cool now.

Oh, so what? Either a movie is good... or it isn't. I could care less what color the people involved are, as long as they're a good representation of the characters being portrayed.

@neobaggins I get the sarcasm but there is nothing even relatively cool about the gods of Egypt movie lol. Who knows, it may be one of those guilty pleasure type movies but from what I've seen so far I doubt it.

Nobody's going to this movie for historical accuracy, it's a fantasy movie in the same vein as Marvel gods are portrayed.

Whitewashing here aside - just how and why do they continue to make relatively high budget movies based on the insane source material that are the Greek and Egyptian pantheons and somehow manage to make them look like dumb fun popcorn movies at best?
