While a huge amount of backlash led to the Academy ditching the idea for a "Popular Movie" category at the Oscars, there are still many pundits who believe that Black Panther could land a "Best Picture" nomination. That's because the Marvel Studios movie not only had a huge cultural impact, but was also an extraordinary comic book adaptation which was hailed by many critics as a masterpiece.
With Creed II now in theaters, Michael B. Jordan (who played the villainous Erik Killmonger) has shared his thoughts on the movie's Oscar chances and while he would like to see it receive some awards attention, it sounds like the massive cultural effect is still its biggest achievement in his eyes.
"The movie has done such a great job, broke through so many glass ceilings, and made such an impact culturally and around the world. If the Academy chooses to recognize that project for all of those reasons that’s amazing icing on the cake, but I think what the movie has done so far is truly incredible and a win all its own. I felt so accomplished doing this movie, but it’s not up to me to validate the film. So the people who make those decisions, that’s something they have to think about and figure out on their own."
He makes a valid point, and even if Black Panther were somehow able to win the "Best Picture" Oscar, it ultimately wouldn't make a difference to how beloved the movie is or the impact it had when it was released back in February.
