BLACK WIDOW Star Scarlett Johansson Hints That The Movie Could Be The First Chapter In A Franchise

We know that Black Widow takes place between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, but what we don't know is whether the movie will delve into Natasha's past, explaining what happened in Budapest with Hawkeye and her first meeting with The Winter Soldier.

Black Widow was killed off in Avengers: Endgame, but recent comments from Scarlett Johansson have pointed to her starring in a "standalone franchise," something which obviously indicates that this solo outing won't be a one-off. There are bound to be other gaps in her history that Marvel Studios could fill in (including those early years), while there's always a chance she could even be resurrected somehow.

After all, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has now introduced alternate timelines and realities, so there's bound to be a way Black Widow's story can continue beyond just this one film.

Another possibility is that Yelena Belova will become the new Black Widow and that she will lead this "standalone franchise" instead. We'll have to wait and see, but the possibilities are seemingly endless and it's definitely exciting to think about what could come next for the character.

With the film set after the events of Captain America: Civil War, Johansson promises we’ll see a different Natasha than the one in past MCU films. “When something huge explodes and all the pieces are landing, you have that moment of stillness where you don’t know what to do next — that’s the moment that she’s in. In that moment, you actually have to face yourself.”

Harbour’s character is also known as the Red Guardian, Russia’s answer to Captain America. “In a way, he’s a super-soldier, but he’s also a very complicated guy. He has a lot of flaws, a lot of idiosyncrasies. It’s a very rich character” Harbour told EW.

Comic-Con attendees were treated to a fight scene between Black Widow and Pugh’s character Yelena Belova, described as a sister figure to the superspy.

It hasn't been released online but those attending Comic-Con were treated to a fight scene between Black Widow and Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova. However, it sounds like these two have a sister-like relationship and will actually be allies in the movie.

Fagbenle describes his character Mason as “a fixer,” who comes from Natasha’s past and is “kind of into her.” “It’s a bit of a complex relationship with Natasha because obviously, ostensibly we have this kind of business transaction, but I think there’s a little romantic frisson,” Fagbenle told EW.

The question is, could he be playing Taskmaster? That would certainly be a pretty interesting twist.

Weisz described her character Malena to EW as “quite a seasoned spy and assassin,” who has “been cycled through the Black Widow Red Room [program] five times at this point in her life.” She also plays a key part in a top-secret experiment within the film.

Rachel Weisz's is reportedly playing Malena in the movie, "a seasoned spy and assassin," who has "been cycled through the Black Widow Red Room [program] five times at this point in her life." She also plays a key role in some sort of experiement in the film.

O. T. Fagbenle, Florence Pugh, Scarlett Johansson, Rachel Weisz, and David Harbour took a break from shooting to give audiences more details about the long-awaited solo film for the original Avengers member.
After the Marvel Comic-Con 2019 panel, the Black Widow stars provided EW with some exclusive scoops about what we can expect from the prequel movie, due out May 1, 2020.

Makes sense. MCU policy is "we don't let anyone be truly dead. Neverevereverever".

@Alex35 - Who in the MCU has died and been brought back to life?

@Alex35 - ah yes. You're one of those. A person who never posts, and only does so when it's something negative and false about the mcu

Soooo... either she isn't dead, or Yelena picks up the torch? ... or maybe even both? Considering the "soul for a soul" policy for the soul stone, it could very well be that once the soul stone is returned then so is Natasha, hence keeping to that policy.

@EgoEgor - ...So, you're saying that the "Captain America Returns the Stones" movie would end with Natasha tagging along with Steve to his perfect 1950 life with Peggy? Because... I'm kinda down for that.

@Spock0Clock - they became a polyamorous couple? MCU really is about representation

Maybe it's a trilogy going backwards and ends with whatever the hell happened in Budapest with her and Hawkeye.

Yes please please please please please. Black Widow has been my favorite female superhero for two decades and Scarlett Johansson portrayal has been spectacular. But now to actually have her in her own movie where she actually gets to practice spycraft and be the hero in the end is a dream come true. Whether that is through all films being prequels (would love to see any number of films set during the blip) or through actual resurrection. It’s hard to say she is dead permanently when in the same film she died another character who died in the same way came back. Plus the Red Room always has it’s ways. A sequel starring Yelena excites me far far less.

Make room for Yelena on the "Next Avengers" roster

Unless Yelena picks up the mantle and the other films focus on her... I don't see the need not the potential interest. Why would you care about a whole franchise focusing on a character whose fate you already know. That works for bipics, and that's about it cause they're not franchise films

I mean, duh. Marvel has never made a one-off movie other than Hulk (and we all know that if Marvel had full rights to him, that would have been a trilogy too).

It’s obvious that this movie will send off Natasha and pass the baton to Yelena to lead a Black Widow trilogy

It would be awesome with a Black Widow/Hawkeye movie set in the past. They meet, they fight, they become partners, they become best friends etc. And finally explain what happened in Budapest.
