Scarlett Johansson's BLACK WIDOW Movie Finds Its Director In LORE Helmer Cate Shortland

After a worldwide search, Scarlett Johansson's long-rumored Black Widow standalone movie has finally found its director in Cate Shortland, an Australian director best known for the Nazi drama Lore.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Marvel Studios has tapped Cate Shortland to helm their upcoming Black Widow standalone movie, which will star 4x Golden Globe-nominee Scarlett Johansson in the title role.

While plot details remain under wraps, THR essentially confirms that the story will indeed be set before the events of The Avengers and will tell the tale of how the former Russian spy became a full-fledged superheroine. The setting also makes us wonder whether we'll finally see what happened in Budapest and/or if we'll see how she first crossed paths with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan).

Her selection comes after a lengthy global search that saw Marvel Studios meet with over 75 potential directors in order to ensure that they found their perfect candidate. Shortland ultimately beat out fellow finalists Amma Asante (Belle) and Maggie Betts (Novitiate) as well as second runner-ups Melanie Laurent (Galveston) and Kimberly Pierce (Boys Don't Cry).

The Australian Shortland is best known for her critically acclaimed 2012 drama Lore and most recently helmed the Teresa Palmer-led thriller Berlin Syndrome. Her handling of a female protagonist in Lore actually caught the eye of Johansson, who vouched for her in the selection process.

Jac Shaeffer recently completed the script. No word yet on a production start date, but it does seem like it may begin rolling cameras sooner than later.

@Otis - just saying, Winter Soldier better play some role in this movie or it's a waste of time for me

@zeon00 - they could totally play it that Bucky is out of his cryo for too long but he still doesn't remember who he is and has a little bit of a romance with her until Hydra finds him and drags and back. And she never told Steve because she literally did not know who he was

@zeon00 -

All I want is a Good movie, with or without a romantic relationship
with great cameos like Nick Fury & Hawkeye
I'm on the fence about Winter Soldier

and since all is connected, we can expect some cool cameos and set ups for other movies and references about Hydra, Modok, Shield, and maybe
just maybe.... Daredevil & Jessica Drew ??

a good movie with a small budget and this will become another
smash hit for Marvel !

@Equivocal - if it wasn't pre-Daredevil i would be on board but it takes place pre-A1, DD S1 is post the battle of new york

also seriously

They have a few pretty major characters, or ones they've made bigger over the years with the movies, that I would love to see get solo films on 50-75mil budgets. A black widow solo would be in the green opening weekend. It's the only situation where I'd be supportive of moving up to four movies per year instead of 3, just to give the characters like Widow their due

So far the directors of the next "Phase IV" movies are:

Tom Watts: Spider-Man: Far From Home

Scott Derrickson: Doctor Strange 2

James Gunn: GotG VOL.3

Cate Shortland: Black Widow "Prequel".
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 7/12/2018, 2:37 PM
@NinnesMBC - and we can also add Ryan Coogler for Black Panther 2
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 7/12/2018, 2:43 PM
@HeavyMetal4Life - I didn't add because I remember Feige saying in an interview that it was up to him to say if he would be able, seemed that he didn't want to speak for him. But yes it seems to be a definite yes that he will return for Black Panther 2.

5 MCU directors confirmed. I wonder who they will pick for The Eternals.
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 7/12/2018, 2:44 PM
@NinnesMBC - good question right there. I haven't thought about any potential directors for that, have you?
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 7/12/2018, 2:46 PM
@HeavyMetal4Life - Neither, but it'd have to be someone that maybe knows how to handle an ensemble because even if they said that it will focus on an specific Eternal, Sersi, it must have other known Eternals.

Maybe F. Gary Gray, I liked Fate of the Furious and he's also doing the MIB reboot with Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson.
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 7/12/2018, 2:53 PM
@NinnesMBC - Yeah, definitely someone who can handle ensemble and have a creative mind like James Gunn or Taika Waititi.

F. Gary Gray is an interesting choice. I enjoyed Fate of the Furious, but of the last 4 Fast and Furious films, it was the weakest one.
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 7/12/2018, 2:55 PM
@HeavyMetal4Life - Yes a creative mind is necessary for The Eternals. Not sure if that extends to have it's own kind of humor but that would be besides the point.

It didn't count with the late Paul Walker so I can get why, still was pretty darn enjoyable and what you expect from the Fast & Furious franchise.

@Nasseal82isback - Awesome then. =)
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 7/12/2018, 3:01 PM
@NinnesMBC - Yeah exactly. And yeah, it did offer what you would expect and I thought the last half of the movie was great, but the first act was pretty weak in my opinion.
