BLADE Finally Gets A Positive Update As Marvel Studios Reboot Targets 2024 Production Start

Marvel Studios' Blade has been through seemingly countless creative teams since first being announced in 2019 but we might finally have some good news about where things stand with the long-awaited reboot.

Marvel Studios announced it was developing a Blade reboot in a splashy Hall H panel at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con. Mahershala Ali hit the stage to close out the panel alongside Kevin Feige, confirming he would play the MCU's Daywalker in a moment which broke the internet.

The pandemic followed, as did a voice cameo in Eternals, but development on the reboot has since hit more than a few stumbling blocks. Blade has lost several writers and directors (and even a few actors), though it does appear to have started taking shape.

The idea now seems to be a grounded, gritty take on the character rather than an effects-laden blockbuster which runs the risk of feeling like more of the same from Marvel Studios. It's also been confirmed by director Yann Demange that Blade will be R-Rated.

Now, we may have a positive update courtesy of Production Weekly

According to the latest issue, the plan now is for Blade to begin shooting this fall. That likely puts the reboot on track for its planned November 7, 2025 release date, though we still have a feeling it might slip further down the calendar into 2026.

While we know better than to put any stock in the synopses shared by that publication, they tend to be pretty accurate when it comes to actual production updates (hence the name).

We've lost track of the writers who have been attached to Blade over the past few years, though Michael Green (Logan) is thought to have finally cracked the story after his five predecessors failed to do so.

"They gave me the R, which is so important," Demange said last November. "I come out of [his new short film, Dammi] wanting to be more open, more vulnerable and bring a more personal aspect to my work. But for Blade, we are going to have fun because Mahershala is such a deep actor."

"I'm excited to show a kind of ruthlessness, a roughness he has, that allows him to walk the earth in a particular way. I love him for that," the filmmaker added. "He’s got a dignity and integrity, but there is a ferocity there that he usually keeps under the surface. I want to unleash that and put it on the screen."

While Blade is still scheduled for a 2025 release, we expect to see (well, hear) Ali play the character before that in Marvel Animation's What If...? spin-off, Marvel Zombies.

Stay tuned for updates as we have them.

Good news, but I won't believe it until it actually happens.

@LSHF - To be fair, it's pretty reasonable to believe. I'd be far more surprised if it wasn't Rated R. They've already given us Echo and D&W around the corner.

Cool , hope it actually happens this time…

Also fingers crossed it’s still a period piece and that the Ebony Blade plays a major role in it as rumored since it would be cool to tie that into the vampiric lore of the MCU or even Dracula himself.

I wish we atleast get a Dane cameo in this if he’s not gonna be in the whole film.

@TheVisionary25 - Same. I hope we see more of Dane "soon"

@TheVisionary25 - I was kinda hoping this movie was gonna be Blade & Black Knight vs Dracula. Nothing too fancy. Period piece flashback like WW or CATFA would make it even better

@Polaris - yep

I thought he was fine in Eternals but I think he has potential

@bkmeijer1 - Me too but if they opt for going for a period prequel featuring a prior Black Knight (or any other prior weilder(s) of the sword) ending with the same end credit in effect that would be fine too esp if in doing so they are ditching the whole Blades daughter bit and if ever go there intro her in a second (or third) Blade film instead of the first.

@Apophis71 - that would be pretty cool. Could see it be framed in the same way as they did with Steve Rogers' story in The First Avenger.

It opens in the present day with Blade and Dane looking at the Ebony Blade, promting a recounting of how Blade and a previous Black Knigth (Nathan Garrett?) fought Dracula in the past. Could even end the same, with them being recruited into a superhero team.

I'm not a big Logan fan but as a standalone movie it's excellent.

This guy is going to write a great movie.

Yes, only 5 years to get the production started.

We'll be seeing the new trailer in 2029 at this rate 🤣

@Origame - Better to wait on something decent than anything close to those plot leaks that came out a year or so ago.

@JustAWaffle - I mean, 5 years to get a script worthy to start filming with isn't a good sign.

@Matchesz - bro Sam looks old as shit. Wesley had the martial arts to back up his age. Hope Ali was hitting the dojo during the waiting time.

@Matchesz - Bit of a difference between a dude who's primary attack is using a gun vs the dude who waves around a sword and has no problems going hand to hand when he needs to. Jackson's most memorable action scene in the entire MCU involved him sitting in a car throughout the entire sequence Blade's action requires much more physicality.

Matchesz - 3/30/2024, 7:44 PM
@HashTagSwagg - true but I can see Ali’s Blade as more of a Ronan Samurai type, someone too good with a blade that jumping around isnt that necessary

Feels like Marvel movies nowadays start shooting well over a year before the release day, so I could see that be the case here too. Just don't believe we'll see 4 movies in 1 year again.

The director is great and every writer that has ever been involved with writing this has worked on great projects. I'm glad it's finally looking like they might actually make it lol. Been Feeling like the MCU version of Flash with all the sweet time it has taken and all the rewrites. They better give Mahershala Ali a worthy film.

Yeah, they need a simple movie for a streamlined story… but it would still be nice if Blade and the Black Knight can come across Elsa Bloodstone, Werewolf by Night and Man-Thing on their travel to battle Dracula. Man-Thing is too interesting to leave on a one off special.

What I'd like to see (and this is just my take) is a period piece that primarily takes place in Victorian England and serves as a sort of "origin story" for Blade, but then ends with scenes showing him through the ages and ultimately in modern times. Then you can add to that the origin of the Ebony Blade and Blade possibly teaming up with the first Black Knight (again back in the Victorian Age) to take down whomever the big bad is (with that Black Knight possibly dying in the process).

Then as a kicker you end it with the scene from Eternals with Dane. That would tie everything together nicely and would give that scene a lot more meaning and relevance. It could also set up the Ebony Blade as a powerful weapon in the MCU and the key to defeating Dracula (or whomever) in a Midnight Sons movie. Makes sense to me. But keep Blade as the lead character and for now, no daughter shit please. Plenty of time for that if/when Ali is ready to pass the torch.
