BLADE Star Mahershala Ali On How He Discovered The Daywalker And The Rise Of Black Superheroes On Screen

Blade star Mahershala Ali has opened up on the lack of Black superheroes on screen when he was younger, revealing how he discovered the Marvel Comics character and sharing his thoughts on Black Panther.

While X-Men is often credited for the rise of superhero movies in Hollywood, Blade actually beat it to theaters. A game-changer at the time, Stephen Norrington's adaptation would spawn two sequels, one of which was great, and the other...not so much. Aside from a short-lived TV series starring Sticky Fingaz, the Daywalker has been on hiatus ever since, but he's now set to make his MCU debut.

Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali will bring the character back to the big screen, and in a recent interview with Variety (via CBR), the actor opened up about following in the footsteps of Wesley Snipes.

Asked about his knowledge of the character prior to being cast, Ali responded: "Well, only what I discovered, like everyone else in the late '90s with Wesley Snipes, you know. I don't think I even noticed how, at least at that time, how I was just accustomed to there not being Black superheroes."

"There was a - I forget the character's name in that - that was supposed to be like, a Black character," he said of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, addressing the lack of Black superheroes on screen during his youth. "He was voiced by a Black guy, and he was modeled off of a Black guy. I forget his name. Oh gosh, I'd have to look it up on IMDB or whatever. You just weren't seeing anyone."

"Once Spawn came out, and Blade, then it was really exciting just to have some superheroes that somewhat looked like you in that place," he continued. "And you see the impact that Black Panther has had on the culture. Which goes beyond either of those projects. [That's] a story that's more suited and set up better for an audience to get behind. And then you have what Chadwick did with the role, and everybody else [in the film] that just kind of took it to a whole other level."

Ali is clearly passionate about the level of representation he can bring to the MCU as Blade, hopefully making it so that young fans can see themselves on screen in a way he never could. There's a huge amount of excitement surrounding what the actor will bring to this role, and cameras are expected to begin rolling sometime in 2022 for a possible 2023 release.

Can‘t wait to see Blade in action on screen finally! Wonder if his solo movie will include Black Knight or if they‘re building up to a Midnight Sons movie, which would be awesome! Also his comments on Black superheroes and Black Panther really makes me wish that they just recasted T‘Chatalla

@MeAreLegend - no need to recast T'Chatalla, they could introduce him as a new character instead. You even already came up with a new name

I first saw Blade in the 1990's Spiderman cartoon. Remember thanks to that being excited for Snipes Blade movie, which also had a great lead and trailer.
Really hope we get a look at Ali's Blade sokn

@SimplyAz - What's crazy is when the first Blade movie came out in theatres most people didn't even know he was a Marvel Comics character. They didn't even put "Based on the Marvel Comics Character" in the opening credits (it was buried in the end credits though), and there certainly wasn't a big Marvel logo back then.

Once the VHS came out they added to the beginning credits, but the version in theatres was missing it.

Crazy to think that Blade was what jump started the modern comic book movie craze, even though 90% of the people that went and saw it had no idea he was a comic book character.

@CorndogBurglar -

Definitely a crazy time to think that comic book movies had reached such a low point that Blade wasn't really marketed as one.
Definitely all CBMs owe some gratitude to Blade
Still remember 2 kids from my class sneaking into a cinema to watch it and telling me they loved it.
I had to wait until it came out on VHS to rent it.

Now I kinda just wanna see him as He-Man. And on that topic: part 2 of MotU Revelation wasn't as good as the first, but I still liked what they did with it.

@bkmeijer -

Definitely the second half wasn't as good as the first half.
More Teela's story than He-Man but I still liked it

Also always there for Evil-Lynn 😍

@SimplyAz - I don't mind it it was more Teela's than He-Man's story, since it's called Masters of the Universe and not the He-Man show anyway.

My favorite part was Skeletor's obsession with He-Man though and how that drove Lyn's arc

@bkmeijer -

I loved how Lyn called him out for it as well.
Definitely an interesting show

@SimplyAz - definitely is. I never saw the original, so I don't how that was, but I do like the technology angle a lot. And with the ending of part 2 I am intrigued to see where that goes

People so quickly forget that Stinky Fingaz was Blade too

Gotta say, it's nice how we're finally talking about blade and it's place as a black superhero film, since we kinda glossed over that films relevance when black panther came out.

Of course, this is also when we're talking about an upcoming blade reboot, and you can't exactly pretend there were no other blade movies.

I hope there are more Black characters on screen. If I wanted to look at white people, I'd look in the mirror.

Got a really good feeling aboult Mahershala as Blade. Seeing Blade, Ghostrider, and Moonknight, maybe even Hellstrom all together would be a dream!

@PC04 - yeah... add WWBN in the mix too. The rollout of the supernatural sub-universe of the overall MCU is going to be incredible.
