EDITORIAL: Has the biggest CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR's plot twist been inadvertently revealed?

Speculation is running amok these days about who Marvel and Sony will get to play Spider-Man next, if it's going to be Peter Parker or Miles, black or white... but what if the biggest Captain America: Civil War has been inadvertently spoiled?

Editorial Opinion

Like we've seen previously today, The Wrap's Jeff Sneider has been on record on both this week's Meet The Movie Press and his personal twitter account about how he has been hearing that Spider-Man will "probably not be Peter Parker" and that he would be "most likely, black, but there's a chance that he will be also Latino".

Jeff Sneider is clearly a Hollywood insider and he has certainly broke many superhero scoops in the past, but does he have inadvertently also revealed Captain America: Civil War's biggest plot twist? This is pretty much speculation at this point and should be treated as a rumor, but SPOILERS AHEAD if that's actually is Captain America: Civil War's biggest plot twist:

Okay, so here we go. Jeff Sneider has been talking about his Spider-Man's "scoop" on his twitter tonight, and he had this to say about Spider-Man's casting:

I personally don't think Peter Parker/Spider-Man is in the need of any kind of reinvention like Sneider suggested. I'm sincerely color blind when it comes to who will be casting as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but there are some things to consider: Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Period. There is no Spider-Man without Peter Parker. Miles Morales very origin is linked to Spider-Man's "death" in the Ultimate Universe.

I'd rather believe that Kevin Feige is actually looking for the best actor to play the role of Peter Parker, regardless of the actor's ethnicity. I do think that changing Peter Parker's ethnicity take away from Miles Morales thunder, not because Miles couldn't be inspired by a fellow black superhero, but because he is one of the biggest minority characters out there. Regardless, I'm hopeful that Marvel is going for the best actor for the role, and doing color blind casting calls for Peter Parker.

With that said, what is actually spoilerific is what Jeff Sneider said a little bit earlier than those tweets above:

After this tweet, Jeff Sneider dismissed his own "scoop" by saying that whatever he says that isn't linked with TheWrap.com should be seen as just gossip, claiming afterwards to not know any Captain America: Civil War plot points. The thing is, other than having Peter Parker played by an African American and/or Latino actor, what Sneider said is the only way that his scoop about Spider-Man not been Peter Parker would make sense story wise.

Mixing up the Civil War with the Death of Spider-Man would be a great way for Marvel to have their cake and eat it too. They would have Peter Parker to show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, only to die because of Captain America's and Iron Man's feud, opening the way for a Miles Morales centric solo Spider-Man film in 2017. Do you think that's a good direction for Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or would you rather see Peter Parker have his own saga in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before Miles Morales shows up? Sound off below.

Don't believe it. Jeff is just trying to bring more attention to him.

That's the dumbest thing that could ever do. I get (maybe) killing him later, but his first MCU appearance? I'm calling bull****.

Anyways, nice write up JJJ. :)

Jeff has since said he was joking about Spidey's death. Considering you put a lot of effort into the article, I'd ask if you could switch it around into an editorial or something. If not, I'd have to delete.

"If any of this is true :

Marvel has [frick]ED UP bigger than DC and anyone could ever imagine."

They screwed up the minute they decided to [frick] around and compete with DC. Now the ass kicking begins

Ugh guys, as is pointed out, he retracted it right after. He just said not to turn everything he says into a big thing.

Thanks for the kind words, First Avenger and DCMarvelFreshman. DMF, I will do that. I'd still argue that in the light of Jeff Sneider's "scoop" about Spider-Man not been Peter Parker, that's the single way that it could actually work, since Miles Morales origin is directly linked to Peter Parker's death, but I will do as you say.

It seems like everyone stopped reading at that tweet.

Well that would be interesting. That is why I think Sony and Disney should tie the Tobey Spider-Man to the MCU. This way Spider-Man has existed for several years. You could say after Harry's death he retired and recently he knew it was time to come out of retirement. Then he gets killed off and because of his sacrifice, Miles sees he needs to step up and fill the shoes left behind from Spider-Man.

I know it's not true but if it was that would really suck!

@Kurne

I didn't. I don't think it's valid to dismiss what he said, even if he flat out said that isn't true right afterwards. Why? If Sneider is indeed correct about Spider-Man been black or maybe Latino, and NOT been Peter Parker, that means that he is talking about Miles Morales. Sneider is clearly not a comic book buff, but I feel that Kevin Feige understands that if you're going with Miles Morales, you can't do that without having Peter Parker first.

I'd argue that's Civil War biggest twist, that Peter Parker is the main casualty in the war between Iron Man and Caps. That's the single way that Sony could have Miles Morales as the new Spider-Man. Sneider talks about "Feige reinventing Spider-Man" and says that he has heard that Peter Parker won't be Spider-Man, which leads me to think that they are actually killing Peter off in Civil War.

Miles sucks, no one wants a middle school super hero. That doesn't work like it might in comics. They would be idiots to kill peter in his first outing. Spiderman might actually kill the MCU

@JJJameson

He never said Peter Parker won't be Spider-Man. Just that he may not be white and Miles is a possibility.

As for him being a-- or the casualty in Civil War, I and most others would not like to see that happen so early or immediately after his introduction. That being the single way Sony could utilize Miles would be a serious mistake. And just because I don't want that to happen doesn't mean that I'm dismissing your speculation or Sneider's [joking] tweets as a result. He backs himself up.

@Kurne

He did said that Peter Parker won't be Spider-Man. Listen for yourself:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ludM8L2sIRg#t=2625

His exact words:

"I don't think Spider-Man is going to be Peter Parker", while nodding to the other podcaster that it was pitching for Miles Morales instead of Peter Parker if that's the route Marvel is going in.
Kurne
Kurne - 2/23/2015, 11:20 PM
I'm sick of all these rumours anyway. Sneider just made it worse and called everyone racist in the process.
Kurne
Kurne - 2/23/2015, 11:28 PM
@JJJameson

My bad. But the reason I remembered it as that was because he still mentioned Miles as if it ain't him either, just another possibility. I don't know how that's possible given he said it may not be Peter first, so whatever.
Kurne
Kurne - 2/23/2015, 11:30 PM
Now I'm just confusing myself... He didn't mention Miles either...
JJJameson
JJJameson - 2/23/2015, 11:33 PM
He nods to the other podcaster when he says that he doesn't think it's going to be Peter and the other podcaster is saying that Marvel should go with Miles Morales.

Spiderman is Peter Parker no matter what. Marvel would [frick]ing dumbasses if they killed him off right when they got him.
TheRockmore
TheRockmore - 2/24/2015, 4:12 AM
There is no emotional connection to Peter at all...and unless there have been enormous rewrites he isn't a major character either...so killing him is like casually killing agent 13 and then replacing her with someone new for a solo movie. No one gives a crap about the character

The thing is, if Marvel chooses to (and God I hope they do!) There is plenty of time to really establish Spidey. AoS and DD are perfect. Cameos and references would go a long long way to establishing spidey. And please... a fight with DD! What! Marvel should take full advantage of that.

If Spidey had one or two films out(connected to the MCU) I'd be down for this idea, but to have Spidey's first appearance in the MCU be followed by his death in that same appearance, is not the greatest idea.

@MrSotoMan I was getting ready to launch into a massive comment to reply to yours (tons of stuff I agree with, tons of stuff I don't), but I'll just leave a link to an article that explains everything I would've said, but 10 times better. I get BadassDigest has a bad reputation on this website (and this website alone, mind you) for some reason, but I'd ask you to read what this guy says and, if you have the time, scroll through the comments as well. It's informative, logical, and presents this story in a bit of a different light.

I think a lot of your opinion comes from assumptions and a certain lack of perspective, and I'm not criticizing you or anything, but sometimes a full realization can come from hearing the other side of things, seeing if it makes sense from that perspective, and then reevaluating your own stance on it. I'm only saying all this because you seem like one of the more reasonable users on CBM.com...otherwise I wouldn't even have spent the time to reply.

Saying stuff like how a race change would "build racial tension" or that this would just be a "PR" move or that "every race did not give a shit about that he was white"...I don't know how else to say it, but I think you're coming at this from a very misguided point of view. But I'll stop talking and just leave the link for you if you ever want to read it.
