Narnia Scripters Named for Captain America Movie

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are being named as scribes for "The First Avenger: Captain America." Markus and McFeely worked on "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" and its sequel, "Prince Caspian."

By ComicBookMovie - Nov 18, 2008 09:11 PM EST

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are in negotiations to pen Marvel Studios' "First Avenger: Captain America." This news comes a little over a week after we reported that Joe Johnston boarded the project as its director.

Created in 1941 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon for Timely Comics, Captain America is the heroic alter ego of Steve Rogers, who is rejected by the Army for being too sickly and undergoes an experiment that takes him to the pinnacle of human form. Paired with an indestructible shield, he becomes a symbol of the war effort, fighting Nazis and villainous scientists like the Red Skull.

In modern times, the character starred in his own long-running comic series and also was a charter member of Marvel's superteam, the Avengers.

Kicking off with "Iron Man," Marvel Studios' slate of movies -- including "Thor" and the "Iron Man" sequel -- is building toward an "Avengers" movie set for release in 2011, in which the characters from the films team for one big adventure. "Captain America" is scheduled for release May 6, 2011.

Marvel's "Captain America" will be a World War II-set movie, and the character will appear in the modern day-set "Avengers."

they setting the whole movie during ww2? dont like the sound of that. but no matter how they do this movie its a hard sell for me, i mean is there any way to remain faithfull to that costume and not look ridiculous?
ThisFan
ThisFan - 11/18/2008, 9:34 PM
it has to be during ww2 because if we want to see a decent Captain America movie it has to start from the beginning and end with him being frozen in Antarctica by accident

I think this movie has potential...but it also has the potential of bombing...BAD...however Marvel is behind this one like it was with Ironman and the Incredible Hulk, so i have high faith for this movie. And as far as the costume looking rediculous...just darken the colors a bit for film, and kinda re vamp certain parts of it, who'd a thought spiderman would've looked cool on screen? but he did, and this one should be fine.

I agree it does have a good potential and Marvel Studios so far have done a good job and seem to be sticking with what works. So, I'm looking forward to this film.

The Ultimate version of his costume, they way the did it in Marvel's Ultimate Alliance, notably during the cut-cinematic, could work well on film. Also I really liked his WW2 version that incorporated actual army gear in the costume itself.

see it here:

They go in that direction then it's absolutely doable.

Also, Captain America is still a bit away from now and it's cool we're getting something on it... but I've heard more on Iron Man 2 than Thor and they're set to be out a month or so apart, so given that, what the hell is the deal there? Get some Thor news.

and just click the Captain America on the top right of the set to see what I'm referring to, if you feel like it.

Great thing about Cap'n America, is you can do a whole movie in WWII, and then freeze him and then do another movie with him waking up and the sequel actually has a lot of the same elements that most movies have in the first of the series, because Cap is now being introduced to the modern era. It's like getting TWO starts in two movies instead of just 1.

da2213viking - 11/19/2008, 6:58 PM
so the movie is gonna be set in ww2, but the avenger movie is gonna be set in modern day time. Is the cap gonna have grey hair or something?

If they wanna stay right on schedual, it's either they make the first Cap movie all in the ww2 era, freeze him at the end and have him thaw out in the beginning of Avengers or... do what they did with the first "actuall" crappy Cap movie and start the movie in ww2 have him freeze and thaw out in the middle and adhere to a future society at the end. Either way, what's gonna make me wanna go see it, depends on their choice of actor.

I can envision the ending for Captain America already. Cap get's thawed out and awakes to Robert Downey Jr's mug.
"Hey, you're not looking for a job by any chance?"
End movie.

Actually, that sounds really good there Lenny and not to mention very Tony Stark "ish" behaviour-like. Good job!

I'm sick of the notion that audiences "have to buy" something, as if this could occur in the real world. Audiences don't have to buy capt.s' suit like they would in the real world, because he exists in a world of radioactive spiders, gamma ray poisoning not killing someone, and a Norse God living in OKLAHOMA. You're telling me an audience will overlook these things as plausible, but a man dressed in a red and blue suit with little wings on his head they will consider absurd?
Shaman
Shaman - 11/20/2008, 1:14 PM
I second bucky!!! They can make the suit just as cool as spidey's. What, is Superman going to have to stay as Clark Kent from now on because people aren't "buying" the cape, boots and panties anymore?
IonParallax
IonParallax - 11/20/2008, 7:03 PM
I concur with Bucky. If you can buy a geeky teen bitten by a radioactive spider, a chick who walks through solid objects, and someone who has a sort of Sonar "sight", I think the all-american outfit donne by Cap is MORE than doable.

I mean, make it look more Body Armor-like, ala Batman Begins, and voila, shcweeeeet.
Shaman
Shaman - 11/21/2008, 6:38 AM
Ooh, armor-like... me likey :)
JohnnyKrypton
JohnnyKrypton - 11/21/2008, 8:22 AM
ugh...no body armor. That's what the shield is for.
Shaman
Shaman - 11/21/2008, 9:07 AM
Yeah but... with a body armor, he wouldn't be as "naked" when he throws it. And it would also be a cool way of taking out the boomerang effect his shield has which i find stupid. I luuuuuv his shield but it's a hefty metal shield and in all logic cannot comme back to him out of thin air. Which means he could be left stranded without it and could easily get shot...ww2 and all. So i think a body armour type suit like batman's wouldn't be that bad of an idea. Of course, all depending on how it looks.
IonParallax
IonParallax - 11/21/2008, 11:51 AM
Give it the same look, but take away the crappy spandex deal, and even the velvety look of Flashes suit in the early 90's series...Not like metallic hard-core body armor, just a very flexible, not at ALL spandex-y, armor-like suit. It doesn't necessarily have to BE armor ya know...Just have that look. The sectioned off look.
Shaman
Shaman - 11/21/2008, 1:44 PM
Well... i wouldn't mind a thin but flexible armor that looks like batman's but is made from the same aloy as his sheild as i'm sure it would come in handy...bullets flying and all. Let's face it, Cap doesn't have Flash's speed to protect him.
IonParallax
IonParallax - 11/21/2008, 2:55 PM
With the Vibranium suit he would be silent AND deadly...even cooler...

imandrew
imandrew - 11/22/2008, 12:58 PM
As long as the costume isn't made out of 100% latex with nipples I don't think they can mess it up too bad. I would really like it if they made it something like the suite he wears in Ultimate Alliance.
iNsaneMilesy
iNsaneMilesy - 11/23/2008, 8:49 PM
Id rarther the story be told in a band of brothers/saving pvt ryan way rarther than over the top Indiana Jones method.
If they stick to the Ultimates, and throw in classic cap story arcs, this has the potential to be a great film. Im not so sure about getting the Narnia guys to write it though, Cap's not a children's story. Full awarness should go to the fact its set in WW2. Name one war movie since the sixties that has been age appropriate for kids. I say go full out realism. The average comic book reader is between 20 and 35 years of age, why keep targeting the film versions at children?, now that MARVEL has taken the reins of thier characters they dont have to bow down corporate exeutives and ruin their franchises anymore. The film is either going to be great and be remembered alonside the likes of recent successes such as Ironman or The Dark Knight, OR it's going to BOMB into oblivion alongside HIROSHIMA.

InSaneMilesy, I totally agree 100%!!! Let's not make this a pg13 guys, alright! Funny thing about "comicbook movies" is that for them to rock at the box office, they have to be extremely realistic! A lesson some people should have learned with "Batman Forever" and "Batman & Robin"!!! I guess we'll have to just wait and see...

FilthyAssistant - 11/25/2008, 11:45 AM
I think they should treat the whole thing like a solid, serious ww2 movie, only add a super hero twist to it. kinda how IronMan didnt start right off as a super hero movie, but built up into one. but they totally HAVE to put in the bit where Cap punches hitler right in his nazi face! I allways loved that.

THING IS WHO SHOULD PLAY CAPTAIN AMERICA?--BRAD PIT?...MATT DAMON?....HOW ABOUT THAT GUY DEAD TRAITOR AGENT FROM FRINGE?..SCI FI'S EUREKA SHERRIF?..JOSH BROLIN?...THOMAS JANE...WHO WHO???
Aiiwolf
Aiiwolf - 12/4/2008, 8:30 PM
The movie wont fail if it has a GOOD SOLID SCRIPT. It about chracter development and the script. The costume on the other hand...they can darken it down a bit. Kinga like what they did with SPIDERMAN. It still blue...but not bright blue as they had it in the cartoons or the comics. Plus Cap' has all times of suits. They can pick a navy blue type.

I just want them to pick a good ACTOR. Looks the part...acts the part. The director is good..the writers are good. Road to predition < same writers for this movie. This movie will be hands down amazing.

...only if they have a solid script. The Dark Knight's script was amazing....and everything about TDK was amazing...acting character development...which is why the script is Downloadable? Which is why The Dark Knight special edition christmas packs come with "TICKETS" lol....for IMAX? hmmmm....

Maybe because The dark knight will be the first movie of this genre to be an oscar winning movie...and best actor will go to our beloved "Mr.ledger"....so like I said before.

SCRIPT is all they need. A Solid script...Because they have the director....and they have the writers.....now the script...and a lucky ACTOR....is what we're all waiting for.

Im really interested to see who will play cap, theres all this talk about it. For me, this movie will be a hit depending on who is captain america. You need someone athletic, big and who has the american patricotic look about em. I think that guy from smallville who played aqua man would be good or john cena just coz i think he has the qualities to be Steve rodgers

BubbaDude

Long ago, a Vibranium meteor crashed into Wakanda. Cap's shield is a vibranium alloy. Never been duplicated.

Cap sucks! They never should have thawed him out. Anything other than his corny little winged head fighting nazis during WWII will bomb. And yes, people DO have to buy the story- it's called "suspension of disbelief", which means the story has to be written so that people are willing to believe (and watch) the movie, and it's kind of vital if they hope to make any money off of this steaming heap.
