Who Dies in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER?

Who Dies in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER?

The biggest question coming out of the CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Super Bowl ad is who's seemingly dead body are Natasha and Steve standing over. Read on to hear my out-there prediction..

Editorial Opinion

Perhaps the single most discussion-inspiring shot in the entire new CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER trailer is this one:

So just who is under that body bag? Most fans seem to think it's S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury. And I agree...but there's a catch.

The most compelling argument against the body belonging to Fury is that Samuel L. Jackson is confirmed to appear in THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. Yet that doesn't mean it's not him under the sheet. Let's break this down a little bit before I get to my theory.

Many fans suspect (and Robert Redford has all but confirmed) that Alexander Pierce is not who he claims to be. Could he be the Red Skull? Could he be Alexander Lukin? My guess is as good as yours. Whatever the case may be, I predict he will be someone working for HYDRA. I'm convinced HYDRA will have a presence in the film because we know Bucky has to be working for somebody, and having it be HYDRA ties the film in nicely to the first one. This could potentially even be used to explain why the World Security Council, headed by Pierce, was instructed to bomb New York City in THE AVENGERS despite Fury's insistence that the Avengers had it covered.

So what does all of this have to do with Fury? Well, this is Marvel Studios we're talking about. They excel at many things, but perhaps most of all at being unpredictable. Think the Mandarin. Think the ending of THOR: THE DARK WORLD. The odds of THE WINTER SOLDIER ending with Pierce being found out, taken down, and everything working out nicely for everyone is simply nonexistent. There has to be a catch. And his name is Nick Fury.

We've seen from both WINTER SOLDIER trailers now that Fury doesn't appear to be in the best shape. He's caught in some sort of explosion and is seen being operated on in a hospital bed. And you know what? I think it kills him. I think the operation is unsuccessful and that's his body Natasha is crying over. That is, until Fury reveals himself to have faked his death, claiming the body is just an LMD. That's the scene in the shot above. My guess is that he somehow found out about Pierce and decided to work underground when he realized the agency was corrupted. No one knows he's alive except for Steve - which is why "it looks like you're giving the orders now, Captain." When Pierce is found out and taken down, Fury steps back in as head of S.H.I.E.L.D. and HYDRA has been defeated.

Haha. Yeah, right.

The film ends with everything seemingly hunky dory, until the final revelation that Red Skull/Lukin/Whoever from HYDRA has taken the form of Fury and he truly did die that day on the operating table. At some point, Pierce realized people were growing suspicions about him and saw Steve was getting through to the Winter Soldier so he had to come up with a Plan B to get inside the system. So when Fury died, he saw the opportunity to either take over his form himself or have someone else from HYDRA do it and come up with the whole LMD story.

So this theory may seem a bit far-fetched and warrantless, but let me offer you some things to chew on that led me to theorize this in the first place:

- This would explain HYDRA's confirmed presence in the Avengers sequel (Baron von Strucker).

- This statement from Joe and Anthony Russo: "I think, and Kevin [Feige] has said this, it’s as big of a bridge of any of the Phase 2 movies from Avengers to Avengers 2. There’s a significant shift in the universe at the end of this movie. Like all of the Marvel movies it has elements of all of the other films, this one I think has probably the strongest bond between those goals."

- Samuel L. Jackson's contract with Marvel expires soon.

- Phase 2 so far has seemingly followed a theme of false faces. In IRON MAN 3, Trevor Slattery was a false face for Aldrich Killian. In THOR: THE DARK WORLD, Loki used his magic to create false faces throughout (Sif, Captain America, the entire sequence with Thor's hand). Which lends credence to the idea that Alexander Pierce will be a false face for HYDRA in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. Yet, even more importantly, all the Phase 2 movies have been ending with some play on the false faces theme that concludes the film with a cliffhanger, totally unexpected twist. Tony destroys all of his suits, realizing they were nothing but false faces themselves. Loki uses Odin as a false face to take control of Asgard. And, if my prediction comes true, HYDRA uses Nick Fury as a false face to take control of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Just why do they want to do this, you ask?

To convince Tony Stark to build a robot.

Thanks for reading my first editorial on the site, guys! Please let me know what you think of the theory and if you have any cool ones of your own. One thing the trailer definitely did prove is that we're in for a wild ride no matter what.

I think the shift will be the destruction of shield, and replacing it with Hammer, with a villain in charge, I think they are going a Dark Reign route, where the villains are in charge, as seen with Loki sitting on the Throne, and Alexander Pierce leading Shield.

That is a solid theory. I do love the theme of false faces in this Phase 2.

So, TWS will be the large bridge between the Avengers?

That first image should come with the caption: so this is where you've been Hawkeye.

Awesome 1st editorial, Carter Friend! Really, really solid theory and I especially like your thoughts on the theme of false faces in phase two. Honestly, everything seems to fit.

Personally, I seriously doubt Marvel is going to bring LMD's into the story any time soon. I get that Tony made an off-handed comment about them in The Avengers, but that was more an easter egg than anything. But LMD's just sound too cliched, cheesy, and kind of a deus ex machina. If LMD's exist, then ANYONE can look like they died but really didn't. It takes a ton of tension out of everything, and I think Marvel's smarter than that.

I'd bet that body is Fury's, or maybe a body double of Fury so he can fake his death or something. Either way, I can't wait! And welcome to the club of editorial writers, dude! Great start.

Is it weird that I don't want HYDRA to appear in TWS at all? I much prefer the film to tackle corruption in the American government (not terrorist) and the idea of security versus privacy.

It's definitely either Black Widow, Cap, or Maria Hill under that sheet

Good theory, but I have to agree with SauronsBANE1. I've never thought of Tony's LMD comment as anything more than an easter egg.

Still, good read, and welcome to editorials, mate.

SauronsBANE1 and cipher - Thanks so much! I actually agree with you both on the whole LMD thing. I'm completely against the idea of them becoming a reality in the MCU because once they're introduced, it greatly diminishes the impact deaths will have in the franchise going forward. That's why I think the whole Fury faking his death by using an LMD will be revealed as a lie by the end, with Fury having actually died in whatever accident sent him to the hospital. People really took the LMD comment by Stark to heart and have been theorizing about their potential place in the MCU ever since (Coulson). I think this would be a great way for Marvel to incorporate the idea of them into one of their movies, thus appeasing said fans, only to deny their true existence with the twist I discussed.

I think if anything the false face theory is just for Pierce not being who he is. I can see Fury faking his death after finding out shield has been compromised. THE WSC via Hyrda can still build Ultron using the specs from one of Tonys suits.

First, I think your analysis and potential storylines are close to spot on. But, here is where I think they have an opportunity to tie the 2014 movies into The Avengers 2. I think that with SHIELD compromised and Nick Fury very much still alive, they will look to the future to guard against these man-made (Winter Soldier)and mythological (Loki) threats to the world. SHIELD and Fury will look to a trusted scientist (Dr. Hank Pym - with a M. Douglas scene?) to help create a "loyal and trusted" technological resource that will act as a worldwide agent of SHIELD (Ultron). And regarding the body under that sheet, I think that it might be Redford's Character. I've only seen him in about three scenes so far and the "death and replacement" of Fury Scenario seems so obvious that it has to be a bait and switch for the viewers.

I think that body is Alexander Pierce.

NPaMusic - Thanks for the update and I wasn't sure if it would potentially be a reference or a scene. And with my thoughts that the body is Redford's (A. Pierce), I think the end is where he will pop up or be disclosed as The Red Skull or Baron Zemo, who will be alongside Crossbones and Batroc.

Good ideas. I see where you're getting at, but how would Redford's character disguise himself as Fury without some sort of powers?

MightyZeus - 2/3/2014, 6:12 PM
Its an interesting theory but i dont think it's Nick Fury.
I think it could be someone else or maybe even Fury as an LMD that get's killed off.

Good speculation though i give credit to your effort.

Superherofan21, I am not sure about the way that Redford's Character will be able to disguise himself, but I have a feeling that he is indeed a shadow character that will be the catalyst for Captain America to go back to the red, white and blue costume and to work with BW and The Falcon to take down this iteration of SHIELD. I just see the ending of the movie focusing on the construction/ usage of Ultron and the movie directly tying into the reasoning behind why he is built.

No matter what happens, I am excited about this movie and the A-List Actors that are being incorporated into the Marvel World (Redford, Douglas, Renner, Downey Jr.).

As a fanboy, my wish is to see something about The Invaders, including Toro, Prince Namor and Cap. And I do want to see something with Baron Zemo.
