One aspect of the comic books that the MCU has always left out is the passing down of titles. That is soon to change though, as in ‘Ant-Man’ the mantle of the titular hero will be passed on from Hank Pym to Scott Lang. One name in the comics that has had many characters behind it is “Captain America”. Bucky Barnes, Sam Wilson, Steve Rogers and many others have held the title of ‘Captain America’ at one point or another, this is soon to be translated onto screen as well, as we know, either Bucky or Sam Wilson will take over from Steve, it’s more of a matter of when and not if at this stage. It may happen in the third Cap movie, but as Chris Evans is signed on to do another movie after that it could happen in part 1 or 2 of Infinity War. I think we could be seeing someone else under the Captain America title a lot sooner though.

In the comics, when Steve Rogers was MIA a second Captain America emerged, a second Super-Soldier injected with the same serum as Steve Rogers. (I don't know too much about this though, so if you want to research it further try googling it). As we know Steve was the only person injected with the super-soldier serum in the MCU, so that would rule out a second Cap wouldn’t it? Theoretically…yes. But as we also know, Marvel are not shy about changing origin stories for screen (Quake, Deathlok, The Twins, etc). So what’s to stop Marvel changing up a second Captain America’s origin story?

Note: MAJOR SPOILERS FOR “AGENT CARTER”

In the latest episode of Agent Carter it was shown that Howard Stark has a vial of Steve Rogers blood, he plans to use it to make medication and vaccines, not to make the world a better place, but to get his hands on some more money. If a situation came up, where he could make MORE money by doing something else with it, I reckon he would. I’m thinking along the lines of reverse engineering a super-soldier serum from the blood. Of course, he would need a volunteer and someone to fund him (once he gets his name cleared Im sure that wont be a problem). I think I know exactly who would volunteer: Agent Daniel Sousa. He is a war veteran and stands for all the things Steve Rogers does, he stood up for Peggy when everyone else was treating her like dirt. Him and Steve are similar in many different ways. You may also hear his name being thrown around when people are talking about who Peggy Carter’s husband might be. In fact, when questioned on who Peggy’s husband might be the show-runners said to keep an eye on Sousa and Thompson (another agent, who has all the qualities in a man that Peggy hates). When questioned about a possible relationship between Carter and Sousa, Enver Gjokaj who plays Agent Sousa said “I think there’s definitely a situation where … if she hadn’t dated Captain America, he might ask her out for a drink”. Even one of the other Agents made a throwaway line “She’s not going to trade in a red, white, and blue shield for an aluminum crutch”. I think if he was presented with the opportunity to be given a serum that could regrow his leg back, and also make him super strong, he would jump on it with both feet forward. (sorry). The actor who played Sousa also had a small cameo as a cop in The Avengers, now there is nothing to prove that these are the same person, but it might add a bit more back story if sometime the future someone makes a throwaway line about "Sausa gave up the Captain America mantle and went back to being a cop, he preferred the quiet life."

EVERYTHING PAST THIS POINT IS PURE SPECULATION AND IS LIKELY TO NEVER HAPPEN. (Although it would be pretty cool if it did.)

I reckon what’s going to happen is Sousa will find out about Peggy working behind the SSR’s backs, but instead of shaming her, he will work WITH Peggy, and will come into contact with Stark through her. After Starks name is cleared he founds S.H.I.E.L.D and the first two people he brings in is Sousa and Peggy. With Starks new resources ad government funding he will come up with a new supersoldier serum, and Peggy will recommend her new boyfriend Sousa to undergo the transformation, seeing the same qualities in him as she did with poor old skinny Steve. Stark will present him with his own new costume and shield, probably not vibranium, but maybe one of the other fancy shields that we saw in The First Avenger. Perhaps we will see an Invaders TV show? I mean Human Torch already exists, we saw him in The First Avenger. We could even see a trip to Wakanda or two in this show. All the awesome missions that Steve Rogers went on in the 40’s in the comics never got realized on screen. An Invaders TV show spanning 8 or so episodes done on the right budget would be a perfect way to show us some of the things that happened in the 70 year gap in the MCU, or at least fill in the bits Hank Pym’s storyline in ANT-MAN doesn’t.

So what do you think? Do you think my theory is too far-fetched or do you think it’s plausible? Sound off below, add onto my theory, and if there’s anything I missed let me know.

There were multiple Captain Americas in the comics postmortem-Steve IIRC so it's plausible.

Im talking about having a 1940s/50s/60s Captain America, se technically when Bucky or Sam takes over, they will actually be the third CA.

@DrDoom Bucky kicked ass during Brubaker's run when he took on the mantle. I like them both equally

The only other person i would be interested in seeing as Captain America aside from Bucky is Isaiah Bradley. In a flashback explaining the origins of the Super Soldier Serum.

There was a second Capt. America and he did get injected with the serum, the only problem is that eventually drove in mad. He even had plastic surgery so he looked just like Rogers. This was all done by the government to replace the original without anyone's knowledge. That's how Marvel explained the stories during the 50s. The character has resurfaced a few times the 70s, most recently after the WinterSoldier saga in the comics.

Oh yeah, he believes he is actually the real Capt. America because of his insanity

Correct me if i'm wrong, very likely i am, but hasnt there been about 8/9 Captain Americas? surely one of the knockoffs would have been successful?

There were 12 vials of Steve's blood, this is not the end of it.

I hope we get an MCU Isaiah Bradley, Buffalo Soldier!

Maybe Steve's blood plays a role in Luke Cage?

As wannabe said, there were multiple men who tried taking the Captain America mantle. I think there will be more super soldiers, not more Captain America's.

@Pedrito Really? Patriot cannot exist without Isaiah Bradley.

If you want to call one of the many men that have tried taking the mantle of Captain America Patriot instead, than that sounds fine.

But to change the Bradley's to Caucasian is ridiculous, it takes away from the impact the Bradley's impact on the Marvel universe.

What if he becomes a kind of replacement for Nick Fury through the formula. Fury was damaged by a land mine, heals with the infinity formula, then works for the OSS. This would be a little out of order, but I could see Souza healing through the serum, then becoming a major player in SHIELD. Possibly even to the extent of leading the organization through the 50's and 60's.

"it's a matter of "when" and not "if" at this stage"

what are you talking about? its never been confirmed that Steve Rogers will die, and someone new will pick up the preverbial shield. Considering the fact that Chris Evans has a 6 film deal with marvel, and its very clear that the appereance in Thor: The Dark World did not count. So this big obsession that everyone seems to have about Steve dying and someone else will take the mantel is just stupid thinking. Now before you all start whining and crying that the story line is Civil War and steve dies in the end, lets be perfectly clear. Steve Rogers does NOT die at the end of Civil War. Steve dies at the end of Captain America: the Death of Captain America. yes, it does fallow imediatley after Civil War. Now, it should also be noted that Kevin Fiege as also said that its the Cinimatic Universe version of Civil War, which could differ from the comic book story line. My point is that stop asuming shit, and pull your heads from your collective rectums and think logically with the information that we already have

wasnt it mentioned in The Incredible Hulk that the formula Banner was using was a form of the Super Soldier Serum? you would need a starting base to work from...AKA a vial of Rogers blood that was taken after the serums effects

"Think logically"
Okay, Chris Evans has has 6 films, 3 of which have already been released, and the fourth coming out in a couple of months, that leaves 2 films, Civil War and one other one. So by "thinking logically" you would come to the conclusion that that last one is one of the Infinity Wars. Chris Evans has said that after his contract is done with Marvel, he wants to take a break from acting and instead start directing. So lets just say they dont kill him in Infinity War, for the next nth films everyones gonna be like "Hey, wheres steve? He was still alive In Infinity War but we havnt seen him in years, whats happening?" Captain America will die, even if its short term, which i dont think it will be. Either way he's going to bite the bullet. and also "Steve Rogers does NOT die at the end of Civil War" and then you go on to say that he dies immediately after...its the same thing.
