Kevin Feige Says Joe Johnston's "Entire Career" Landed Him the Captain America Directing Gig

In a recent interview from the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel President of Production Kevin Feige told MTV that Joe Johnston was chosen to direct Captain America: The First Avenger based on his early work as an art director, in addition to his recent work behind the camera:

"When you look at the design work he did on the original Star Wars—I saw a bunch of people dressed as Boba Fett already lined up for his signing... The work he did with [Steven] Spielberg on Raiders, the two films he directed, of course The Rocketeer. I think his whole career has been leading up to this movie.

"I definitely asked Joe, 'What kind of gloss are we going for here? Is this going to have the kind of
Spider-Man, Fantastic Four shine?' He said, 'It's not going to be that glossy, not that colorful, but we're not going as dark as something like Batman.'"

Captain America: The First Avenger opens July 22, 2011!

I really don't know at this point which movie I'm more excited about, Captain America or Thor, but I do know that this is the best time in human history to be a comic book fan!

A little hyperbolic, I know...

I'm gonna say that Jurassic Park 3 was NOT actually a contributing factor.

They're right about his visual work on stuff like Star Wars, Raiders, even Wolfman which had great lighting and costuming. Captain America should at least LOOK great.

Speaking of Captain America articles and admins, I haven't been able to edit "My Thoughts on Captain America: Part 1" Just curious if theres a reason why.

I never knew that Johnston did art direction on Star Wars or Indiana Jones. That alone makes for a pretty bitchin' resume!

@BIGBMH: Once you've submitted it, it's in the hands of the admin staff. Were your changes major or minor?

I'm hoping JOHNSTON don't [frick] it up, but already early warning signs!

THOR tho of course = EPIC!

@LEEE: What warning signs do you speak of? Taking off Cap's wings is hardly a call for concern.

@teabag: Noinch! Loved that show when I was a kid!

@Witty: Yeah, the teaser footage had a veeerrrry Raiders feel to it!

@dgr8Nova- Exactly!

I believe Johnston has the talent. All he needs is the follow-through. That said, I believe he's definitely the guy to get the timeless feel that Cap needs.

@Brent & Tea- But the wings are the movie. It is the centerpiece of what makes Cap Cap. LOL

Give him WINGS! It's such a small thing to do to make people happy. It greatly improves the entire look of the costume. I am a fan of the costume either way but to me, the wings complete it. They are the finishing touch that it needs.;}

@ brent sprecher lets hope its down the same road as raiders,raiders of the lost ark is an 80s classic.

@HAWKS- That looks really great, but I won't be upset either way. They could do without them and get him to paint them on after teaming with an Airborn division. Jimmy Hendrix was in the 101.

@Hawks: Awesome!

@Odysseus: It wasn't all Johnston's fault. He came onto the project after another director had been working on it for years.

The only thing about either of these movies that bothers me is that they're being converted to 3D. I've never seen a movie that was converted to 3D in post. I've heard they end up looking like crap. Can anyone give an example where it didn't???
KeithM
KeithM - 8/7/2010, 6:21 PM
@Puck: See it in 2D and it doesn't matter. :)

I just saw Wolfman and thought Johnston did a great job, considering how late he came on board and the mess it might have been/I'd been led to expect. As tea said, he did a great job with the atmosphere and overall it wasn't bad as an updated old-school hammer-ish monster movie.

I choose optimism. With Cap, he's been the man in the chair right from conception, and his career resume is perfect for this movie.

Raiders crossed with Rocketeer? Sounds good to me.

You are right brother Brent...it is the best time to be a comicbook fan. An old schooler like me remembers those rerun shows of the Marvel Superheroes that were first aired in 1966. I began watchin'em in the 70's and Captain America was on every Monday and Thor every Friday. Sometimes I miss those days.
