Chris Evans is one step closer to the role of Captain America. says The Hollywood Reporter.

Marvel has not confirmed the development and CAA, which reps the actor, declined to comment.

Though Chris was one of the contenders, he did NOT screen test.

Evans' offer would include starring in up to three "Captain America" movies plus "The Avengers" movies and appearances in several other Marvel movies.

Marvel Studios is now telling SuperHeroHype/ComingSoon.net that they do not comment on rumors.

UPDATE 2 Big Shiny Robot say Word around the campfire is that they still might be testing Kellan Lutz (if his Twilight obligations allow) and Alexander Skarsgard, just in case.

UPDATE

Hollywood Deadline adds that Chris was indeed offered the role, but the testing process will continue, due to Chris being "conflicted" with playing another Superhero role.

Chris Evans recently was announced to star alongside Anna Faris, in the comedy, Whats Your Number. And because of that, many speculate he'll have to drop out due to this recent deal as Steve Rogers. If Chris is indeed Marvel & Joe Johnston's Captain America, he would join, Hugo Weaving, who was also reported by THR, to star as Cap's nemesis, Red Skull. And of course in 2012's Avengers, alongside Robert Downey Jr, Samuel L. Jackson, & Chris Hemsworth.

Though this is great news, THR says he didn't screen test, so this may just be a loose offer. We'll have to wait for Marvel Studios & Chris's representatives to confirm it.
