CAPTAIN MARVEL: Jude Law Teases His "Devout Warrior" Character But Is He Playing Mar-Vell?

Marvel Studios has decided against revealing the name of Jude Law's character in Captain Marvel but both the actor and Brie Larson have now shed some light on what we should expect from Starforce's leader.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Captain Marvel kicks off with Carol Danvers living on Hala where she's part of Starforce, a military team that's essentially the Seal Team Six of outer space. Among its members are Korath and sniper Minn-Erva, while Jude Law's mysterious character leads the team and is said to be "Kree to the core." The question is, who exactly will the British actor be playing?

That we don't know but "He is driven by a belief in the divine leadership of the Kree people," Law explains. "So he’s almost a devout warrior — unquestioning, conservative, but inspirational." Whoever Law is playing, he grows close with Carol and views her as both a mentee and pet project.

"These extraordinary powers she has, he sees them as something of a blessing and something that she has to learn how to control," the actor reveals. "That’s a motif throughout the piece, the element of learning to control one’s emotions and to use your powers wisely." We know that she'll have God-like abilities but could it be that the Kree is attempting to use Carol for its own means? It would be a neat twist for Law's version of Mar-Vell to be outed as a bad guy at some point in Captain Marvel!

Larson, meanwhile, had this to say about Law's mystery man. "There’s a lot and back and forth that comes with the two of them, which kind of creates a little bit of tension with the rest of Starforce," she explains. "Like, ‘Why do they have a special relationship, and why isn’t it me?’" Do you have any theories about who the actor could be playing here? Be sure to let us know your thoughts below.

@BlackBeltJones - Maybe he acts that way to compensate? Or his deep belief in unification comes from the fact that he's pink skinned Kree.

All signs are pointing to Mar-vel, but i don't know why Marvel is keeping it a secret. They are probably going to make us thank it's Mar-vel the whole time but in the end he's revealed to be a Skrull. Also that pick of him and brie in the black suits must be them escaping some space prison because their uniforms have the same alien language that list their crime as the ones the guardians wore in the first film.

Definitely gonna be a bad guy.

In the same way that Talos is the main Skrull antagonist, Att-Lass will be the main Kree antagonist.

It will be these two that drive the Kree-Skrull conflict to it's worst.

But I would expect more than just one twist in a movie full of Skrulls.

(And yeah, if you didn't already guess it, I think Jude Law is playing Captain Atlas).

@GwenLantern - My guess is in the end he and Ronan will command Carol to destroy the Skrull planet or something, and she refuses.

@GwenLantern - Att-Lass is one of the members of Starforce. He’s in the picture with Carol and the team. According to several sources anyway. The two unknown characters are Att-Lass and Bron-Char.

@Fogs - I think you’re into something. I think he’ll be played as a good guy until the end and then you realize how far gone he is in connection with the war. So indoctrinated by the empire that he doesn’t see the issue with like you said wiping out a planet or killling innocents and Carol will have to take him down

Ooh this all sounds like good stuff. Looks like we'll be having some interesting characteristics and dynamics.

It's possible Jude's character might not be Mar-Vell or a very different take on that character. I'm guessing their making him a lot more grey morally.

@BlindWedjat - Based on how the character’s being described, I’m pretty sure he turns out to be the villain. You also don’t hire Jude Law to play a supporting character. You can put money on Mendelsohn dying about 2/3s through, and Larson taking on Law.

I'm loving this teased Kree/Skrull dynamic in the MCU.

I'm really intrigued to find out more about that.

So, he's the Sinestro to Carol's Hal Jordan? Oookay. A lot of this is playing out like the animated DC film Green Lantern: First Flight (Hal even went "Binary" in that film).

Also, I don't think Law is Mar-Vell. He's probably Yon Rogg, given his seeming closeness to Ronan and Kree ideology. Five gets you ten that Carol is going to end up fighting him.

I don't think he's a villian. I think he is just a morally gray warrior who incites that sort of conduct in Carol. Kree are merciless and devout and im sure he will cause an internal questioning for Carol, whe she reconciles with being Kree and human.

I see him being more of a Stick to Carol's Daredevil. He ignites that warrior flame within her. Plays on her ruthless side.

Stick: "You're a warrior Matty. Heir to the Spartans. Baddest of the badasses."

@BlackBeltJones - I've always liked that quote. Don't know if it's a common one or original, but it's good stuff.

I do wonder how Ronan (and Korath) fit into this dynamic. If Jude's character is morally grey, devout but yet inspirational too, there might be a hero inside there. What happens in this film (or any point in time) that really triggers Ronan's fanaticism? Maybe he's already there but Jude's character has been keeping him on a leash of sorts.

Really curious stuff and I hope I'm not expecting too much.

@BlindWedjat - Srick was handled perfectly on DD. Love this quote too. It represents Matt completely. He is a warrior, fierce as they come and he enjoys it.

I think it may be a push and pull where Ronan and Jude ignite the flame in one another. They're ideologies spark certain things in one another.

I think Jude is devout but maybe Ronan is as well but Jude's gray area seduces Ronan. I could zee a sort cult thing happening. Ronan is sort of wayward or seeking answers and Jude has them.

I'm either mis-remembering things or I'm in an alternate reality. I could have sworn when Jude Law was cast he was confirmed as Mar-Vel. Where did all this secrecy come from?
