The Future of DC Comics Looks Bright!

It has been known for a little while now that DC comics is in a transitioning stage to change. This change involves new costumes, new stories, a slightly tweaked continuity and new characters.

The DC fanbase is split with one side protesting against any form of change and another side fully embracing it. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am on the side of the latter.

I see all of this change as only having positive results at the moment. And I wished for some of this change for a little while now. The changes that I wished for was little reboot of the continiuity and costume change for some of the main characters. At this point I know you probably want to cut my head off for that last statement because they have come to fruition.

Basically, the point of this article is voice this statement: It can only be a good thing! I have outlined 4 reasons to justify this statement.

TV chances:

The changes in character costumes and continuity might mean there would be a bigger surge of interest by the tv media as various news outlets are already paying attention.

The changes I can see so far looks good, there seems to be an element of realism on the costume front. For example, Wonder Woman can't run around in just undies, she's a feminist! Get real! It now looks more practical especially without the jacket.

A TV show featuring the likes of Firestorm and even Hawkman now look very likely due to the costume changes, promised stories and the sudden interest brought about through the moral panic generated by people who are furious about everything so far.

Movie chances:

I have one word: Superman. The costume looks badass! Now, pretty much every hero isn't wearing an underwear on the outside. This whole thing about superheroes having the pants on the outside started with Superman and it has ended with him. Such a change would make a certain Superman movie have a level of believability that has not been seen before. Aquaman could have his own movie a few years time once Geoff Johns has given him the 'Green Lantern Rebirth treatment'.

New readers:

As you all know, there is a new numbering and a slightly tweaked continunity to give the illusion of a fresh start. This means increased readership! New people! New kids, New teenagers and New adults can jump into these new stories without the fear of being confused by an already easily confusing continuity. Just imagine given any guy the first issue of final crisis, he wouldn't even bother finishing the first 2 pages because the story relies on previous knowledge from previous books.

Now I want you to imagine that friend that calls you gay or childish for reading comics, buying Justice League #1. This can actually happen now!

DC Digital:

It would help bring about the rise of digital comics. I'm hearing that these new stories will be released online the same day as print release. That is very convenient for people all around the globe because let's face it, print is dying. Print readership has faced a sharp decline in the past years. Marvel has always done better in print year-in year-out since 2002, I want to see this change!

The DC Comics Creative team consists of Dan Didio, Geoff Johns, Jim Lee and others. The future of DC comics couldn't have been placed in better hands.

The red trunks being gone are a good thing. I can't tell you how many times my non-comic book reader friends call Superman "gay" or "retarded" because of the red trunks. I personally hated them at first, but got use to them.

Hawkman, Wonder Woman, and Green Arrow's costume look fraggin' schweet. I share your optimism on this relaunch of DC.

I think they should have done a better job with Cyborg. He needed a better update than that.

The missing red trunks on Supes was...expected. So much heated debate about that particular issue for some odd reason, might be why DC removed them.

I guess i don't mind either way. It is a new era after all...but still...gonna miss the red trunks. Just so classic with Superman. Ah well! ;D

Everyone take note: That there on the iPod pic at the bottom is SUPERMAN. He's the Man of Steel, and he wears his underwear on the outside while still looking awesome. That douche in the top pic is NOT Superman, that is Ultraman with boots.

And as for this "Updating"? What a load of bull, if it was about updating, GL wouldnt have those 1960s white gloves, and they wouldnt have given Batman his black underwear back, even though it makes no difference on him.

And I don't care what any of you say about this: That new \S/ shield is [frick]ing ugly, that's atrocious, why change that? It's iconic, it doesn't need to be changed. It's like an uglier version of the Returns one.

Why edit all their crotches? What is with DC? Superman without red underwear on the outside is basically a naked Superman, Wonder Woman's undies have been extended (although I understand that that one makes sense), Green Lantern's crotch is a machine gun...
FAIL.

Well, they've been changing costumes for TV and movies for ages so I don't see how this improves TV and movie chances. Also, you don't need a new universe to give characters new costumes.
New readers? It's a possibility, but I don't see this being effective for bringing in new readers just because of low numbers. It'll elp but most peole who don't read comics don't do so because of a lack of interest in trying it out. There aren't that may people who think about it and decide against it due to high numbers.
Increased digital support is a very positive thing and I think that will make things more accessible to non-comic readers who don't go to cmic book stores or get subscriptions. However, a new universe wasn't needed to do this either.

I don't mean t be Mr. Negative here, but this will do very little to change public perception of comic books and probably have minimal effects on the industry. It will however, throw away every story fns have been reading. While some things about their new direction are good, the decision to throw away their current universe will lkely have more cons than pros.

"Various news outlets" paid attention when Northstar came out of the closet in 1992.

How many times has ALPHA FLIGHT been canceled and revived since then?

Not that differently. This new one has much sharper angles. Compare it to this older picture.

I'm aware of that. What I'm saying is comparing older Jim Lee Superman pictures to the new JL pic, the new S is pointier. It could just be ths picture, but it's definitely different.

It's almost like it's halfway between the older Jim Lee Superman S and the lightning Superman S.

The changes r epic, quite frankly I love characters like Superman and Batman, but I find Marvel comics more interesting as their willing to change with the times and alongside their audiences, DC doesn't. Hopefully, these new stories will be interesting and get me back into DC comics

i agree that losing the underwear is a bad move...personally i think superman is the one hero whose costume should remain untouched. he's the anchor. and should be the constant. and personally i prefer the last wonder woman costume. don't get why everyone was so put off by it. the story was actually interesting for once as well... and the v-neck collar is lame.
