Comic Creators React to the Reaction of Action Comics #900!

Dan Lawlis: Is there any doubt the comic book industry is dominated by Godless anti-American leftwing extremists? No. And this is exactly why I don’t miss working in the comic book field.

Ethan Van Sciver: I just recommend a letter writing campaign, now that DC Comics has letters columns again, demanding to see Superman carrying an American flag into space again. Let the editors know it matters to you that Superman remains an American icon. They’ll listen.

Gabriel Hardman: Superman..American...something...fake...angry...bored...

Ed Brubaker: To be fair, Superman never punched Hitler.

Kurt Busiek: He shook him by the scruff of his neck, though. AND Mussolini!

Larry Marder: FOX generated Superman controversy is mostly so Newscorp can take shots at arch-foe TimeWarner right?

Stephen Wacker: Got some angry letters today from people mad at Marvel about what we did to Superman.

Ron Marz: Sarah Palin has finally commented on the Superman/citizenship controversy. Said she can see Krypton from her house.

Tom Spurgeon: I didn’t mind Superman renouncing his US citizenship, but that back-up where Batman takes a dump on the Constitution was pushing it.

Gail Simone: Not to be outdone, Marvel is doing a story where Iron Man eats the constitution.

Chip Zdarsky: Sure, he can renounce his citizenship, but only an American would call himself “Superman” and wear an outfit like that.

Paul Cornell: I joyfully await the day when comics fans would prefer to talk about the story rather than the controversy.

Superman is not an American citizen. His citizenship is faked. His birth certificate is based on a lie by Ma and Pa Kent. He was not born in the US nor of US parents and has never gone through any naturalization process. He is an illegal alien.

@mstaley3000 he escaped from a dying planet he would not be considered an illegal alien he would be granted refugee status similar to people that flee Cuba.

it's funny people acting like he's actual living human/alien being. he went to Washington yesterday, had a conference with Obama and told him, "I quit" lol.

At the end it's what ever each individual believes, I still see Reeves flying with the red, white and blue. End of story.

@GDSuperGuy, Superman was an American, hence his ability to renounce his citizenship. True he's Kryptonian, but it's also true we are Earthlings.

@Blackstone, Shuster was born in Canada but his nationality was American. Siegel was born in Ohio. DC says Superman was a US citizen. At worst, he was a Kryptonian-American. "Dude was made" in a Cleveland, Ohio, USA high school! Know your role!

Comments by the creators clearly show a lot of elitism and lack of understanding as to how the characters became so popular and what they mean to the fans. Why not make Superman a 5 foot tall Arab with a beard and sandals. But make him African, Australian so as not to offend anyone and one blue eye and one brown eye. One blond eyebrow and one brown one. Show him using disguises and voting for Bush, Obama, and Mickey Mouse to cover all the bases. When he eats for fun is he mindful of PETA or VEGAN rights?

These types of idiots are the reason logic and reason have left conversation. When everyone sees the boogie man in everything, anything is controversial, scary, and must be changed to be avant garde!

Oh yeah, and change his name to "No better than anyone else man."

I find this very disheartening. It goes beyond the usual comic book gimmicks to keep readers interested and commits an atrocity greater than any Superman has ever faced: it robs HIM of the core that shaped his ideals; not as SUPERman, but as a MAN.

America, like all countries, has its' problems. But in Superman we could still see a symbol of the greatest things about OUR nation. To DEFINE him as a "global" hero doesn't make him a greater symbol. Much like when Prince once decided to be refered to only by a nebulous symbol for awhile, it makes Superman a symbol without any true meaning.

Dmon, Cubans who are refugees do have a path to citizenship however it is a status unique to Cubans and would not apply to Superman who does not come from Cuba.

WittySupername, it may be that he would be granted refugee status but he wasn't since Ma and Pa Kent never applied for it for him this makes him an illegal alien. Also, our country doesn't let refugees automatically citizens, we deported boatloads of Haitians despite their being refugees.

There, I have defended my statement concerning a (probably) ridiculous storyline about a fictional character's immigration status. I feel much better now.

@mstaley3000 He has 2 persona Clark's was forged but Superman was given citizenship by the US government.
Also you are wrong it is not unique to Cubans. In 1981, the Refugee Act was passed. Asylum and/or Refugee Status was to be granted to anyone outside of his or her own country of Nationality (or already in the United StatesS) who is "unable or unwilling to return because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion". They come from Africa, East Asia, Europe, Latin America/Caribbean, South Asia and many different places every year. But most come from Africa now.

Dmon - not to pursue this to the grave but Cubans have a special right granted only to them. They get automatic status if they touch the USA. They do not have to prove they are fleeing persecution. Other groups must be able to show persecution.

Now, I am not an avid reader of Superman so if you tell me he was granted citizenship then I believe you. I have no doubt that any country would love to have a highly moral super powered Kryptonian as a citizen (unless they thought he might try to depose them because they are evil).
