Comics: Concept Art For A Redesigned Wonder Woman That Didn't Happen

Some time ago artist Colleen Doran was asked to do some concept art for a redesigned Wonder Woman making her more scifi/fantasy oriented, click here to take a look.

Below are some concept sketches that artist Colleen Doran did for J Michael Straczynski. The art, she says, was suppose to have a fantasy feel to it. The concept didn't stick but Colleen posted the sketches on her official web site.

From Colleen Doran:

Some time ago, after J Michael Straczynski’s new version of Wonder Woman was first released, JMS asked me to do some concept sketches for a more fantasy-oriented version of the character. I know this will set the internet into a tizzy, but this was more rumination than reality. I was not asked to draw a series, just to do some concept sketches. It is very unlikely any of these sketches will be used for anything. So whether you like ‘em or hate ‘em, be aware that concept sketches are meant for brainstorming, and we do not censor our brainstorms. You put it on the paper, then you draw something else.

What do you guys think? It is defiantly and interesting different look at the character. Be sure to sound of your thoughts in the comment boxes below.

I like them, but they stray way too far from convention to be usable on camera.

Those concepts art really nice. Wondie should use it when she still inside the Paradise island. It works for young Hippolyta too.

The problem with wonder woman to me is that her uniform is way too colorful. They need to tone that down.

These are interesting. These would have definitely made Wonder Woman seem a little more 'tamed', or docile rather. Maybe it's the stars that are scattered about her costume. Looks cool though, maybe it could be a new look they could switch to when or if they have her and Superman marry. lol.....

ITS AWEFUL!! THE WONDER WOMEN IN THE CARTOON MOVIE WAS HOT!! In these designs it makes her look like XENA THE WARRIOR PRINCES with a chin like JAY LENO WTH!!! What next she's going to have a butt like NIKKI MANAJ!!! Not that it wouldn't be to bad (smile) but I'm just saying!! Give us the WONDER WOMAN that we oh so deserve!!! PLEASE!!!

All fear Wonder Hippie!
Looks like something designed for Cher to play Wonder Woman circa 1965.

Rugged look ftw.

@weneedrevelation- jeez don't turn yourself into a complete as*hole. Honestly they're not bad sketches. Granted the face doesn't look exactly like diana, but none the less, they're still done pretty good.

naterator- I agree, that gladiator design is the best ever.

The ones on the right of both pictures look gorgeous imho. Not ideal for fighting but a style I would've liked to see regardless.

Really, they're best going with more a rugged, Xena warrior princess type look with a rustic color palette for an live adaptation. No granny panties or high cut bathing suit but a legless, halter body suit with a skirt (super short so it's easy to move around in) like the one naterator posted.

The one on the left-top is ridiculous!

NATERATOR@, that warrior-outfit is the
best I've seen yet.

The new pants-design is so stupid it ain't
funny! Wonder Woman should not have PANTS!
She needs bare leg! I've never seen an
AMAZON warrior drawn with pants! Give me a
break!
DDD
DDD - 7/27/2011, 11:43 AM
Why does WONDER WOMAN'S legs have to be
covered by pants, what, are we all Amish
now and must not show women's legs??!
WTF?

But I do agree, the red and blues need to
be toned down like NATERATOR'S@ Warrior-
Woman design.
