COMICS: DC Confirm New Justice League Series And 52 #1 Issues In September!

Today, I reported the news that DC will be rebooting the comic book universe and relaunching all their titles as new #1 issues, while RorMachine brought us the story that Geoff Johns and Jim Lee would be helming a new Justice Leauge series featuring the original cast of characters the team is best known for. (both stories came via Bleeding Cool) Well, here is the official announcement from DC.

This year, change is in the air at DC Comics.

On Wednesday, August 31st, DC Comics will launch a historic renumbering of the entire DC Universe line of comic books with 52 first issues, including the release of JUSTICE LEAGUE by NEW YORK TIMES bestselling writer and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns and bestselling artist and DC Comics Co-Publisher Jim Lee. The publication of JUSTICE LEAGUE issue 1 will launch day-and-date digital publishing for all these ongoing titles, making DC Comics the first of the two major American publishers to release all of its superhero comic book titles digitally the same day as in print.

DC Comics will only publish two comic books on August 31st: the final issue of this summer’s comic book mini-series FLASHPOINT and the first issue of JUSTICE LEAGUE by Johns and Lee, two of the most distinguished and popular contemporary comic book creators, who will be collaborating for the first time. Together they will offer a contemporary take on the origin of the comic book industry’s premier superhero team.

In the hours, days and weeks to come, we’ll have more news about the other titles. Tomorrow, we’ll hear from Co-Publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee about this momentous occasion. Keep checking THE SOURCE for updates about the other first issues.

This year, make history with us.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The above picture of the Justice League is NOT from the new series.

^Me too @MrSpecs I feel that they can't just throw away everything Johns and Morrison have done for the characters.

I wish they looked a little bit more mature though.

Supes needs red briefs, and Lee needs to stop with the V collars, it only looks good on Aquaman.

Like Supes' new look and really cant wait to read this book. I've been readin' the current volume of Teen Titans since it began, and it's ending out on #100 with the team against Superboy Prime. Hope there's no ridiculous plot device used at the end of Flashpoint. Or maybe this new line is a continuation of the story taking place in Flashpoint? Like that whole new world. Who knows anymore haha :P

MikeKus34 - 5/31/2011, 2:37 PM
Also, from the looks of the picture, Lee loves to draw those collars that open down into V's lol. Everyone has one. Even Wonder Woman!

woudln't be surprised if the superman reboot use's a costume thats similar to Lee's design.

"This was a chance to start, not at the beginning, but at a point where our characters are younger and the stories are being told for today's audience." so there getting de aged, so there basicly starting from scratch now.

@WittySupername

Like Shit? HAHAHHAH

Supes looks the best he has ever looked.

Wonder Woman doesn’t look like she is fighting crime in a garish swimsuit anymore.

GL looks great but he always did

This is one of the better Aquaman looks.

Its an across the board improvement

I'm not going to gain any fans here but there's absolutely nothing wrong with Superman wearing his underwear on the outside like there's nothing wrong with Batman wearing his black underwear on the outside. You guys who are so bothereed by it are obvious like Lex Luthor... You feel demasculinized by a real man, just kidding but seriously, nothing wrong with EITHER of the suits, just a new direction. Should it evolve especially now since they'll lose likeness rights? Sure, preemptive attempts are necessary, but y'all don't need to be whiney byatches about it.

So Wonder Woman gets pants and a leather jacket, people hate it, and it goes back to the classic... only to once again be returned to pants and the choker thing? Oh, only THIS time the gold is changed for silver! WTF? What does changing the gold parts to silver do?

52 new number ones. Just another crappy gimmick to generate mainstream publicity and its free advertising. Gimmicks, cheap shocks, and huge 'events' are the only ways DC and Marvel know how to sell books anymore. Back a few years, they relied on interesting stories, compelling characters, and good art to sell books. Not surprisingly, their sales were much higher then than they are now. Gee, I wonder why?
Mother
Mother - 5/31/2011, 3:48 PM
Just stop all of these stupid gimmicks....please by all that is holey....stop...
FredBroca
FredBroca - 5/31/2011, 4:33 PM
These gimmicks are like the variant covers of the late 90s/early 2000s. It pushes away loyal collectors and brings on fly by night investment collectors who quit once they realize that the books don't appreciate much. Rebooting the entire Universe back to issue #1 is also a witless idea. Marvel did it a few years back and they didn't profit much from it, in fact, Spider-Man and a few other books reverted back to the old numbering, in effect remembering it was stupid to begin with.

Jim Lee's art is just played out and pretentious as the man is in person. Why not leave well enough alone? Why try to fix something that isn't broken. If the Wonder Woman/Superman Returns costume debacles taught us something it's that people like the classic incarnations of their beloved character and costumes.

OKAY! EVERYONE LISTEN! I KNOW WHY!

The reverse Flash is going back and forth in time changing every hero's history. Batman is now Thomas Wayne, and Bruce is the one who got killed as a kid. And all the other heroes were changed too.
DC will most probably be back to normal in a year or so. It will be fun, but it won't be forever!

@ToughGrappler

Me, I think this is the year I stop reading anything CURRENT by either two. And I gave up on IDW's Transformers and GI Joe series because they got too confusing. I think from here on out, it'll be trades of older stories, and only one single-issue series that I'll read: IDW's Godzilla-Kingdom of Monsters series.

DC, you are going to get a GRAVE reckoning at this year's SDCC.

1). The comic book industry exists in order to make money [$$$]. DC comics is consistently beat in sales by their competitor Marvel Comics.

Marvel Comics takes in about 40% of all the revenue in the comic market compared to DC Comics that takes in 30% of the dollar share [10% less than Marvel]. The other 30% belongs to Dark Horse, Image, IDW, Dynamite, VIZ, Archie, BOOM!, and others.

However, DC Comics has been behind of Marvel Comics for years.

2). WB, according to insiders, wants DC Comics to be more profitable or they will start making implementing budget cuts; It's a business after all.

3). The team at DC Comics is looking to reinvent their line in order to bring in new readers; they plan to keep and reintroduce what works and toss out what doesn't. Plus, they are shaking up the creative teams on books in order to reinvigorate the characters. Therefore, they are giving new readers the opportunity to jump in at a #1 in hopes of gaining market share.

They are adapting to the market by making their product more appealing to a wider pool of readers.

4). I, personally, agree with the reboot; it's about time.

I think that no superhero should ever be married or have children (See: Flash, Superman, Batman, Catwoman, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, etc); it's an idiotic gimmick. I think it makes the books unrelatable to kids under 30, and boring as all sin [like watching some family oriented TV show]. The angsts in relationships should always be maintained; girlfriends are okay, but skip on the wedding until the very end of the series, and no [frick]ing kids.

Plus, the heroes shouldn't age to look like decrepit old men in tights (see: Aquaman, Green Arrow). When teenagers read comics, they have to be able to see themselves 10 years in the future, not their parents. Who wants to read about their parents?
VictorHugo
VictorHugo - 6/1/2011, 10:57 AM
Why, AlexanderLuthor, comics are for parents, X-box are for the children.
FlixMentallo21
FlixMentallo21 - 6/1/2011, 5:24 PM
This is a REALLY bad idea for DC to try and get new readers. Instead of hitting the great big reset button, all that time they did big event after big event could've been spent on keeping the deal with the Siegels and increasing creative output: new characters every week or month, new stories, and putting more properties on the big or small screen or on the toy aisles. They and Marvel failed to do that.

The way I see it, the comic book industry as a whole is better off dead and never to return.
