While reporting on the latest details involving DC's aggressive relaunch of their company wide reboot/relaunch, the L.A. Times Hero Complex reported that Justice League #1 is the best selling comic of 2011 and that figure is based on pre-order totals alone! This number will significantly increase when the comic is available for purchase at local comic shops next week.
Plus, six other titles are also enjoying early success with pre-order sell totals well over 100,000.
Well, for all intensive purposes, it looks like DC's relaunch strategy was a success. However, the real test will be whether DC will be able to maintain their early numbers. It's long-term success that will determine the ultimate verdict on whether this strategy will be deemed a failure or success.
Owner, Gerry Gladston of New York-based Midtown Comics, voiced the concerns of many readers that frequent his store:
“We’re not at all convinced that digital will attract a lot of new readers,” he said, “but we hope that it will drive people to our stores.”
“Fan interest is huge — much of it positive, some negative, and some very cautious,” Gladston said.
The 2011 reboot of the DC Universe is an upcoming publishing event following the conclusion of the current Flashpoint crossover. It will entail changes to both the publishing format and fictional universe. Publishing changes include same day release of physical comics with digital platforms, all DC Universe titles being cancelled or restarted at a new issue 1, the former Wildstorm imprint being rolled into the greater DC Universe, and a number of new titles being released to round the number of ongoing series being published on a monthly basis up to 52. It will be also accompanied by a number of in universe changes designed to make characters more modern and accessible, though the scope of the changes will vary from character to character.
