COMICS: Wonder Woman #3 To Radically Alter Diana's Origin

Ok, you have clicked so from here on SPOILER WARNING in effect. In the DCnU Wonder Woman has a Daddy. And not just any Daddy, the Daddy of all...Daddys. Here is an excerpt from Nypost.com..

By Zeus! Wonder Woman is a daddy's girl. The iconic character is getting something she's never had in her almost 70-year-old history -- a father.

"She's going to learn she's not who she was told she was," "Wonder Woman" writer Brian Azzarello told The Post.

A storyline in the amazing Amazon's newly relaunched comic will reveal she's actually the daughter of Zeus, the thunderbolt throwing father of the Olympian gods.

This is a radical departure from the previous Wonder Woman canon that has maintained over the character's long history. The original origin story had Diana's mother Hippolyta fashion her from clay and have life breathed into her by the other Greek Goddesses. But sometimes a change can be a good thing as writer/artist team Brian Azarello and Jim Lee explain..

"In this case, making her a god actually makes her more human, more relatable," DC co-publisher Jim Lee said.

"Everybody's got a father," Azzarello said. "Even if he's not the nicest guy in the world.

The article also suggests that this will not be the only character receiving a few changes to their origins and more will be revealed at NYCC. What do you guys make of this? I think there are pros and cons to the change but for the most part I'm open to it. For more from Azarello and Lee click the link below.

@Intruder That's the idea of the Reboot. Make DC more like Marvel.

STOOPUDR
STOOPUDR - 10/10/2011, 7:36 AM
So the DC relaunch is basically Ultimate DC? At least Marvel kept the traditional series running at the same time. Imagine if they canceled the Marvel Universe and all we had was Ultimate. I hope this works for DC, otherwise they will have some upset fans.

Wonder how long until there is a gay half black/ half hispanic Superman?

But the Wonder Woman change doesn't sound bad. Could even be explained in the old canon, as the original origin was the legend and the new story is the truth.

@Geeksiah and that ain't even trolling. Nothing but the truth.

DiDIo, Johns and Lee will kill DC if they are not removed from their current positions...

I don't like it. The origin has been intact for 70 years and she does not need to have a father. I wish they would quit changing and messing up evrything and just let the stories be...

@intruder exactly.....I would have preferred something else, but Zeus was a bit of a slut....so anything is possible. I wondering this cause mt Olympus to be more integrated into dcu like asgard in marvel

Isn´t Azarello the dude who wrote the worst Superman story ever,
"For Tomorrow"?

In which Superman was confessing his sins to a poor priest just because he was going to die of cancer, so he could keep it a secret?

The reason they are changing all ICONIC the origins and costumes of these characters is to avoid loss of copyrights on them. That ruling on the Siegal and Shuster lawsuit spurred all of this on. The ruling stated that S&S get the rights to all things Superman from Action Comics 1-4 plus a few other stories and DC gets the rights to all other "S" related things from that point onward. In other words Superman gets divided between two copyright holders. S&S get Clark Kent, Lois Lane, Faster than a speeding bullet, able to leap tall buildings, THE BLUE LEOTARD SUIT WITH RED CAPE and "S", Baby rocketed from exploding planet origin and the like, while DC gets Kryptonite, Lex Luthor, Ability to Fly, Heat Vision, ect. Supposedly the judge did this to force the two sides to get together and settle it as that would be more appealing to both sides than splitting the legend in two.

This is the real reason for the reboot. DC is being proactive with the rest of their iconic characters. You watch, they will change all iconic origins to the point beyond their first incarnation in order to hold these copyrights......at least until this case is finally settled. Right now that ruling is in appeals court as they want a detailed laundry list as to who gets what.

If they don't end up settling, we could very well up with S&S selling their rights to Disney/Marvel. Can you imagine Marvel doing the golden age Superman in modern continuity?

niknik - 10/10/2011, 9:50 AM
Whether you like Marvel or DC, it really would be for the best if this new 52 were a complete failure after the #1 issue hoopla has faded. That would force DC to get some kind of deal done with the estates of S&S and keep the icon instact.

I approve. That "Wonder Woman is a golem" thing was kind of awkward to explain, and the whole thing was originally predicated on a kind of gauche hyperfeminism that's fallen out of favor. Suuurrre, Wondy can't have a Dad because that makes her dependent on a man for something. It was a silly idea from the outset that just got sillier. This is a good move.
