Review For JUSTICE LEAGUE #24

I have only one review this week, but it's for a real dandy. The blockbuster team of Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis have graced us with another installment of one of DC's flagship books. Read on to find out what I thought of it.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #24 by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis

This issue is really Ultraman's story. Considering that his story wasn't told during Villains Month, I was anxiously awaiting something like this. As usual, Geoff Johns doesn't disappoint. Ultraman, AKA Kal-Il, has the same parents on both his native and adoptive planets as our Superman, but that's where the similarities end.

The book starts out on Krypton and the fashion of the day is the costume from Man of Steel. There must have been a great sale at Kryptonian Old Navy because everyone is wearing it. It's kind of funny that the universe that features visual cues from Man of Steel is the evil one. You could argue that this issue is a classic example of nature versus nurture, but it's quite apparent that being evil is the very nature of Universe Designate 3. (I say it that way because saying "Earth 3's Krypton" doesn't sound proper.) On this Krypton, the House of Il's "U" symbol means strength; perseverance at any cost. Little Kal never had a chance for love and was treated to some lovely indoctrination on his voyage to Earth. The Earth 3 meth Kents are a charming couple that are straight out of an episode of Cops. You'll just have to read the book to find out how Kal's relationship with his parents played out.

There are other moments of note in this issue including a little insight into the backgrounds of Power Ring and Superwoman, who are their Earth's counterparts of Hal Jordan and Lois Lane respectively. I do hope we learn more about them eventually. We also get a glimpse at The New 52's Doom Patrol. Ultraman also storms the Daily Planet in a way that reminded me of Superman 2, only more violent. This is all expertly drawn by Ivan Reis, who continues to show us why he's one of the best artists currently employed by DC.

I won't spoil the big fight at the end. It seems that it is meant to lead directly into Forever Evil #3. Next month's issue of Justice League is supposed to give us more insight into Owlman's background and I can't wait. If you love Forever Evil, then you really should read Justice League as the event rolls on. It's the perfect companion. Score: 8.5/10.
