Brian Michael Bendis has officially announced that he's developing a Legion of Superheroes animated series for HBO Max.
The writer shared the news on his website, revealing that HBO asked if there was any DC properties he'd be interested in adapting for the streaming service. Bendis immediately mentioned The Legion, and has been working on the "adult animated show" for a while now.
Though the project is still in the very early stages, Bendis was able to confirm that the series will be based on the current comic series he works on with artist Ray Sook.
"Just like that series, on sale now, it will harken back to so many classics while at the same time doing what Legion does: pushing all the ideas of superheroes forward in every direction," he added. "I think Legion of Superheroes is among the greatest franchises in the history of comics and I’m as honored to be curating them as I was Spider-Man."
We don't have a whole lot more to go on, but if the show is based on Bendis and Sook's run, we will probably see the likes of Lightning Lad, Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy, Chameleon Boy and Brainiac 5 as core team members.
Bendis also pointed out that "animation takes a loooong time," so updates will likely be few and far between for the foreseeable future, but be sure to let us know what you make of this news in the usual place.
