It Looks Like The Y: THE LAST MAN TV Series On FX Will Continue Despite Trouble Behind The Scenes

Well, it seems like Y is getting into trouble before it even gets off the ground, and with trouble behind the scenes and people leaving the project, will the series be able to make it's 2020 premiere?

Earlier this month it was reported by Bleeding Cool that FX had cancelled Y, it's television adaptaion of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra's widely celebrated and Eisner award winning Y: The Last Man comic series. That report was quickly amended, however, after a tweet from co-creator Pia Guerra helped set the record straight.

It turns out that the showrunners, Aida Mashaka Croal and Michael Green have parted ways with the project. According to Jon Solberg, Fx's VP of Public Relations stated that the showrunners left due to creative differences and that the network is planning to move forward with the show featuring the same cast.

Interestingly, the comments from the showrunners themselves actually seem to contradict that statement, however. Take a look for yourself.

"Sad news for fans of Y: THE LAST MAN today. FX has decided not to move forward with our series in its current form. We are grateful for everyone who came together to make our pilot and build the world of Y… Our writing staff, director Melina Matsoukas, DP Rodrigo Prieto, and cast including Lashana Lynch, Barry Keoghan, Diane Lane, Imogen Poots, Amber Tamblyn, Julianna Canfield… And of course, the minds who started it all, Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra. We hoped to reward their talent and their trust not just with success but with a show that had something to say, in a time when things must be said. As Y fans ourselves, we hope the future allows just that." - Aida Mashaka Croal & Michael Green

So, the good news is that we will still be seeing a series in some shape or form, that will at least feature the same cast as was originally reported. Bad news is that we don't really know what that's going to look like now, or how long it may be delayed for...

If all goes well, will premiere on FX in 2020.

@BlackBeltJones - judging strictly from the exiled showrunner, i get the feeling the showrunners wanted to use the show as a platform to express their opinions about social and political issues but the network disagreed with that approach, probably instead wanting a safer approach that would appeal to everyone and not alienate groups of people who dont watch shows to be preached at and told the show runners to focus on the comic not their own agenda, and the showrunners stood their ground and got booted.

That's kinda my gut feeling based on the statements and reports, but I may be wrong. I'm kinda glad it's not being hijacked by preachy messages. Theres enough SJW agenda influenced programs out there, and all over social media. I dont want my escapism to talk down to me too.

@PTM - Well, it's a modern show (based on a comic) about a world without men. Maybe it's inherently not the ideal place to expect totally apolitical escapism?

@Kyos - lol have you read the comic? Because there is nothing political or agenda driven about the comic. Y and Ampersand being the last surviving males of their respective species is literally just an interesting premise. The do get pretty deep into the logistics of what that means for humanity's future, but that's about as far as it goes. It wasnt an Avenue to address issues relevant to the world today as a major focus or because it gave the writers a platform to say something in a world where something needs to be said. It's just a premise for a dope comic, and comic book escapism at its finest. So yes, I kinda have a bit of hope that same spirit makes it into the show and it doesn't get overloaded with the showrunners personal interests to make the series a platform to say something.

Weird stuff going on. I have to say though that I basically stopped following the development of the show after they announced the cast. Which for the most part is actually amazing, but I just can't work with Keoghan as Yorick. We'll see what happens.
