COMICS: Marvel Announces The DEATH OF WOLVERINE!

All the signs pointed to it happening eventually, but now Marvel has officially announced that the incredibly popular mutant berserker will finally meet his maker in a new four-issue weekly series from Charles Soule and Steve McNiven. Check out some promo art after the jump.

Well, we're finally gonna bid farewell to one of Marvel's most popular and enduring characters. This summer's “3 Months to Die” arc teased the possibility of Wolverine's death by permanently stripping him of his healing factor, and this September that will play out as many of us figured it would in Charles Soule and Steve McNiven's Death Of Wolverine. EW has the scoop, and below you can see the cover of the first issue and a lovely black and white promo page. We also have quotes from the creative team.

"For a long time, no matter who Wolverine was battling, he’s been the eternal victor," editor Mike Marts explains to EW. "He almost always comes out on top. Now he finally comes up against an adversary that he cannot win against, he cannot fight. What does that mean for this character who’s been around for hundred years?" Soule adds: "I hope that when people finish it, they’ll feel like he died in a way that was true to him." That sounds pretty definitive! Will this be one comic book death that will stick..at least for a while? We shall see. More at the link below.

I'm not currently reading this, so I shouldn't really comment, but it's a little funny to me that the moment Wolverine turns mortal he supposedly dies. I guess living for yonks without having to factor in the possibility does that to someone.

YES YES! I've been waiting for this moment for a long long time. Die you over-hyped poor excuse for a character.....DIE! And don't come back ever!

I like both DC and Marvel, but Wolverine is SOOOOOOOO overused and overhyped, just like billnye69 said. Same thing with Deadpool. And DC is guilty of the same (to a slightly lesser degree) with Batman (and Lobo... talk about the irony of a character's usage and creation).

One of the greatest comic characters of all time. He's been over used recently sure, but that doesn't (or shouldn't anyway) detract from the countless amazing storylines over the years.

Even if this doesn't stick (which it won't of course) it should be an interesting read.

I wish they'd keep him dead, I wish they'd just let him rest before they [frick] him up even more. But no. He'll be back in 5 years max.

So will this be like that time he did a planet fall and healed in a few hours or like that time he was in a really tough battle where he got punched a time or two and was crippled for a week?

Oh no. In total shock. Never saw this coming...ever.
Guess this will forever change the face of the Marvel universe. Nothing will ever be the same again....again.

Ps...I've yet to have my coffee & cigarettes so somebody else please pick up with the usual clichés that typically accompany such earth shattering events. ;-)

@virileman- I want both to succeed on the big screen, because, when they is the case, WE ALL WIN. That being said, Marvel is doing well now. It has taken them a LOOOOONG time to get where they are (let's not forget the MANY missteps their movies have had/been), and we have yet to see what DC/WB have up their collective sleeves. The advantage DC has over Marvel is that they own the movie rights to all of their characters: That makes big event movies/team ups a much more viable commodity in the long run. Let's all just enjoy the ride.

I am completely sick of "deaths" in comic books that we all know won't stick. Absolutely no point in reading these, much less buying them, when everyone knows he'll be back within a few years max. They might as well have Dan Slott working the show here too

……..yawn……

Officially the 150,000 time comics have run out of ideas.

Instead of 'killing' him, how 'bout just using him a lot less?! Like keep him in a single X-Men book where he belongs.

Sheesh.

@deepee3 Whoa, slow down there. Using Wolverine in one comic? That would make too much sense. How would they sell Wolverine fans 6 comics a month that way? ;D

And......this is one of the reasons I don't buy or read the books anymore. Gives me more money for the bar anyway.

At least when Mar-vel died in 82, he was dead. Same as the original Warpath. They're either out of ideas for the next "event that will change everything" or out for an easy buck.
drfate

Hmmmm, big fail Marvel. Here's why: We've seen this device too many times.

Death of Superman. Death of Batman. Death of Captain America. Death of the Human Torch. Death of Nightcrawler. Death of Phoenix. Death of Jean Grey (lol). And on and on.

With readers buying this, we'll be promptly expecting his return in dramatic fashion several months later. Wolverine is a tentpole character. He brings in the cash. No doubt about that. Killing him (and I suspect, you've already planned his return) is a ploy to eek out the cash that may not be as entertaining this go-round as you expect or we require.

There is NO way, we expect this to be permanent, and therefore, the impact of it is already lost before its even begun.

Personally, artwork in a book is as important as the story. Depending on the creative team for this, I may not pick it up. Price also matters. $2.99 is pushing it, but I'm seeing more and more books go for $3.99 and even $4.99...for one damn comic book! As much as I've always wanted to read Wolverine: Enemy of the State, I just CAN'T STAND Romita JR's artwork!!

Think of it this way: If I go to a movie, I spend $15 for 2 hours. I can read a comic book, leisurely in about 15,20 minutes (hey, I like to drink in the art, that's my thing!!) I've seen some clowns blow through a comic in 3 min; that's $1 per minute or less! So, I'm looking at about $4 for 20 minutes of entertainment. For 2 hours of "comic book entertainment" I'm spending $24.00.

I would NOT spend $24 for a movie. But I'm spending $24 for the same time with comics. The value is just not there anymore.

Knowing all of this, WHAT WOULD BE THE POINT to read a story that I've seen already a hundred times? It morphs from "wow, that sounds like a cool story" to "damn, that isn't even worth my time or money to read a story I've seen before". "Death of Wolverine", may in fact be Death of an overused plotline.

I know. Its tough to come up with fresh stuff. We've seen old Wolverine, manga Wolverine, hero Wolverine, loner Wolverine, possessed Wolverine, insane Wolverine, bone-claw Wolverine, Horseman Wolverine, fugitive Wolverine, spacefaring Wolverine, stone-age Wolverine, headmaster Wolverine....

At this point, I'd rather see "Wolverine Runs for Office" than "Death of Wolverine"! We've never seen Wolverine as a politician. Sounds weird, I know, but its...fresh ground. Think about it, it could be interesting.

Ravn987
Ravn987 - 4/25/2014, 7:08 AM
Oh, come one this is by no means permanent... It'll probably be like the death of Peter Parker in Amazing #700/Superior Spider-Man (Spoilers?)... I give it a year, maybe two.

@deepee3 That can be said about almost every comic book character! I like Batman as much as anybody, but he doesn't need twelve titles every month. lol

Mrcool210 - 4/25/2014, 7:10 AM
The Death of wolverine, only to come back 5 minutes later. Ugh, if you're going to kill a character off make it permanent, or at least last like 3 or 4 years

Marvel and DC need to move on to new stunts and gimmicks like sex-changes, rapes, castrations, bestiality, heroes come out as pedophiles, incest, cannibalism, Satanic worship.
