What's going on at the House of Ideas these days? First Victor Von Doom, Alpha Flight, Destroyers, and Iron Man 2.0 were canceled. Now the solo title for X-23 is being put to pasture. Is there a pattern here? More on that after we cover the X-23 details.

The monthly comic starring Wolverine's clone daughter has been canceled. A spokesman for Marvel spoke to CBR about the development and while not confirming the end of the series the spokesman did say that writer Marjorie Liu would be working on other titles at the House of Ideas.

The move follows a number of cancellations earlier this month for titles including "Victor Von Doom," "Alpha Flight" and "Destroyers." However, while those projects were either miniseries that weren't yet published, "X-23" presents a different case entirely. Aside from being an established monthly title, the comic wass also Marvel's only ongoing starring a female lead and the one written by arguably their most recognized female writer in Liu.

Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso stated that cancellations of titles like "Alpha Flight" came in part due to "new budgetary mandates" and were essentially sacrificed for the new strategy of shipping extra installments of it core series. It should be noted that "X-23" was not the lowest-shipping Marvel Universe series. Behind it were such comics as "Thunderbolts," "X-Factor," "Avengers Academy" and "Ghost Rider" amongst others.

Fans of the X-23 can find her in January's issue #24 issue of Avengers Academy and the Venom mini event.

Now what is going on here? Marvel is seemingly canceling titles left and right these days, some before they even get started. Could Marvel be gearing up for a response to the success of DC's new 52? If you're familiar with Marvel and their aggressive marketing style, you know they are not going to be content with sitting in 2nd place; no matter what Joe Quesada and Axel Alonso might publicly say. If I was a betting man, I'd place a sizable wager on the notion that Marvel's cancellations are an effort to make space for a response to DC's New 52. Don't expect Marvel to reboot anything but expect another "Big Event" that will try to steal some of DC's shine. I'd say expect an announcement to be made soon that a slew of new titles will be released, that will lead up to the next crisis in the Marvel Universe.

Sound off below in the comments sections with your own theories and ideas. Are you buying that these are simply cost cutting moves?

X-23 (Laura Kinney) is a fictional comic book superheroine appearing in books published by Marvel Comics, in particular those featuring the X-Men. X-23 is a female clone of Wolverine.

X-23 was created for the X-Men: Evolution animated television series before being brought into comics. X-23 first appears in episode #41 (season 3, episode 11) of the program (titled "X-23").

Her comic debut was in 2004 in the series NYX, where her history and past were never divulged but her abilities were showcased. In X-23, her first miniseries, her origin was fully explained. She became part of the X-Men supporting cast in Uncanny X-Men #450.

X-23 was created by Craig Kyle. He and Christopher Yost were the writers of the two episodes of X-Men: Evolution in which X-23 appears ("X-23" and "Target X"). Kyle and Yost also scripted X-23: Innocence Lost, a six issue miniseries that details the character's origin, as well as X-23: Target X, a six issue miniseries that covers the character's experiences between her origin story and her appearance in NYX. They continued to write X-23 into their runs on New X-Men and X-Force as a member of the teams.

X-23 received an ongoing comic book series in 2010, written by Marjorie Liu.

Plus one for X-Factor. Can't wait for 230. Havok and Polaris under PAD again. That sounded dirty.

I think with X-23 moving away from the X-titles and with Avengers Academy I'm ok with this cancellation. Plus we know it will be pack in 6 months.

"X-Factor" better not get canceled.

Could you imagine if this was a sign of Marvel attempting to emulate the new 52? XD

Wow,

*No, it is in no way a reboot. All it is is a big "preview/things to come" issue.

Well DUH! Of course there will be another "big event". There is ALWAYS another "Big Event" in the wings after the last one finishes up. It's a MUST with the marketing department these days. They simply MUST destroy every city in America once a year or they haven't done their jobs as a comic book company.

For what its worth, I'm glad they are thinning the herd by getting rid of all these rediculous 3rd rate titles touting 4th rate ideas. Stick with the mainstays of the Marvel Universe. I've seen enough of clones, copies, and red skinned variants of the main heroes in the Marvel U. They can still have their "Big Events" that cross over many of their titles, just quit blowing up the world every time in order to get sales. Tell a good story for once without the epic destruction and use quality artists and you will see plenty of sales.

That's just what we need. Another Marvel "event." Develop your characters and their own personal worlds a little more and bring an even into the mix every two years or so with limited but meaniningful crossovers in the mean time.

This is the only comic from Marvel that I am reading. Is the US so male centered that a woman can't shine in her comic? Marjorie Liu was doing a terrific job with Laura... Shame on you Marvel!!!

It's kindda ironic for a society that love to make fun of gay people to also love seeing almost naked men wrestling or showing their bare muscles in a comic book.

That sucks. I was actually enjoying that book. Gave Gambit some much needed time to shine as well.

How the hell can she be a clone? A clone would be a perfect match, an identical twin - including gender. I've never read this (I've got Wolverine fatigue already), but it sounds dumb.

@ ricodetroit

Ever heard of a paternal twin? Like when a brother and sister are twins.... but yes, there is too much Wolverine (and Wolverineish people) running around. And now there's a NEW new wolverine in Osborn's NEW Dark Avengers.

* Didn't finish my thought, anyways, guessing they used the DNA to create a paternal twin-like clone.

Responding to this, "were essentially sacrificed for the new strategy of shipping extra installments of it core series" basically means Marvel/Disney don't have the faith in a book like X-23.
And if these cancellations make way for more Spidey/Avengers/X-titles, I won't be buying.

soaponapope - 11/15/2011, 3:17 PM
huh.... im kind of surprised... x-23 was a good book... the daken storyline wasn't great but i did enjoy Laura's story. now im wondering where we'll learn about her post-utopia adventures, maybe they will simply re-incorporate her into x-men. if she joined one of the avengers teams that would be pretty sweet. although it would seem sudden since she was kind of in the middle of her soul-searching journey.
