COMICS: The Death of Iron Man?!

COMICS: The Death of Iron Man?!

Marvel have released the cover to Invincible Iron Man #20 featuring an image that might just be a deceased Tony Stark...

By JoshWilding - Aug 26, 2009 12:08 PM EST
Filed Under: Marvel Comics
Source: IGN

Drawn by Patrick Zircher, and designed to mirror a shot from Civil War: The Confession by Brian Bendis and Alex Maleev, the cover depicts a fallen (dead?) Tony Stark with Thor grieving by Stark's side.

Marvel had no further details on the cover, but did mention issue #20 is the start of the "Stark: Disassembled" arc that begins in November. The Eisner Award-winning team of Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca will be handling the issue.

So, what do you think? Is Marvel poised to kill off one of its biggest heroes less than a year before Iron Man 2? Does Stark take down Norman Osborn before his final breath? Is this all just a big swerve? If so, what do you think is really going on?

well, Tony's "died" many times before this so I'm not worried. With comics even DEATH becomes a minor inconvenience.

No way...I'll bet you anything they are going to have some major Extremis issue. They have to separate him from the Extremis. This will be their way of making him more like the movie version, back to just putting on the armor instead of summoning it and being one with the machine. I HIGHLY doubt he'll be dying anytime soon.

Catain America's revenge, motherf***er!!!

hahaha but seriously, stark will not die i'm sure. they better not. cap's death now means nothing because they are bringing him back so soon. they should have waited to bring him back until right before the first avenger movie comes out to build hype.

but ironic would it be for stark to die in Invincible Iron Man?!

Guys lets not forget covers are designed to grab your attention by standing out from the pack. Stark isnt going to die. Gotta say I love Matt Fraction, Iron Fist was one of the best marvel comics alongside Thor and to think I had wasted time reading Rulk thats 5mins I'll never get back

Ive enjoyed Invincible Iron Man because after Stark acted like an asshole in Civil War and pretty much ever since then its been good seeing him redeem himself by going up against Osborn...maybe his death will be the ultimate redemption, lol! i doubt it though especially with a movie coming up - maybe Thor's going to help bring him back after the current arc (in which he is actually dying)

I agree with the people who say hes coming back. look at all the heros that have died and came back.

@NubaX Rodny to me seems like a pussy thats my opinion

Actually this cover shows a flashback to an event not illustrated in Thor vol.III issue 3...after Thor handed Iron Man that serious beat down for stealing his DNA, he still had the decency to wait around for him to regain consciousness before forcing him to walk home.

"Now don't do it again."

Incidentally, Chris Hemsworth or whatever your name is...take a good look at this cover. Time to hit the steroids, friend.

He's not going to die. It's just a play on the cover of him sitting next to Cap's dead body. Maybe though. They have killed all their major heroes. Thor died, Cap died, Spider-man's stories died with One More Day. Might as well kill him off too so they can raise prices when they bring him back. Or maybe they get a younger Stark from the past to take his place.

Killing off superheroes is an unoriginal, uninspired gimmick used to try and boost sales. It worked for SUPERMAN but it won't work again. Why? Because even though the GIMMICK worked for Supes, the Death of Superman story itself was a big smelly pile of garbage. Now anytime somebody sees this tactic in play they'll inevitably think "a dead superhero? That'll suck just like the Superman death and then they'll just bring him back to life in 5 minutes. WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CARES?"

am i the only person that hates matt fraction? his punisher war zone series was laughable...

and no, i don't think iron man will die. that would be stupid. you all know what the story potential will be when they finally resurrect cap. the interaction between stark and cap will be something!! and killing iron man in this story would just mean absolutely nothing. they just got done killing cap, they won't kill iron man so soon. its too repetitious

Okay heres the thing, Marvel is making a ton of money right now off of Iron Man (the movie) and have another hopeful blockbuster on its way, staring Tony Stark...so why in their minds would they allow him to die in their comics? If someone watches the movie, goes to check out the comics, and Tony Stark isn't Iron Man, they just lost money. Its just some variant cover that has nothing to do with what is actually going on.

Oh dear god I hope not. Iron Man is one of the best characters in the Marvel Universe, it wouldnt be half as good without him! But I suppose it is the Marvel Universe, Iron Man will stay dead for a year and then realise damn, its time to wake up from being dead. Either that or he will get shot. Now that should kill him but noooo, it will probably make him time travel instead! Oh Cap and Batman, why? I mean Batman, ok but then Cap too, what?! Bloody comics, I love them! lol
