COMICS: THE SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN Was The Best-Selling Comic Book Of January 2013

Despite fans claiming that they would be dropping Dan Slott's The Superior Spider-Man after Peter Parker's death in Amazing Spider-Man #700, the first issue of the "Marvel NOW!" series was actually the best-selling comic book of last month. Hit the jump for details!

When the ending of Amazing Spider-Man #700 was leaked, the death threats and verbal abuse towards writer Dan Slott started pouring in across the internet. When the issue itself went on sale on December 26th, the reaction from many was a lot more positive, but there were still an awful lot of fans who claimed that they had no intention of buying a Spider-Man comic book which didn't have Peter Parker behind the mask. Well, the first issue of Slott and artist Ryan Stegman's The Superior Spider-Man was actually the best-selling comic book last month, while the second issue came in at fifth place. As you can see, Scott Synder's Batman and Geoff Johns' Justice League continue to hold high places in the Top 10, although Marvel clearly dominate for the most part.

1. Superior Spider-Man #1 (Marvel)
2. Batman #16 (DC)
3. Justice League #16 (DC)
4. New Avengers #1 (Marvel)
5. Superior Spider-Man #2 (Marvel)
6. Savage Wolverine #1 (Marvel)
7. Uncanny Avengers #3 (Marvel)
8. Detective Comics #16 (DC)
9. Avengers #3 (Marvel)
10. Uncanny X-Force #1 (Marvel)

To get a little more technical, Marvel beat DC Comics with 34.82% in dollar share and 40.23% in unit share, compared to DC's 31.61% and 35.41% respectively. To find out which graphic novels took the Top 10 spots last month, be sure to click on the link at the bottom of the page.

I wonder how much of that profit was from stores ordering it because its a Spiderman #1 issue AND its controversial.

Its worth noting that ign up until last week was owned by fox which owns spiderman and a few marvel properties so generally are anti - DC. Or point out anything good by marvel when it suits them.
Worth pointing out.

By the way, that picture of Spider-Man is god-awful. Why is his rib cage sticking out like that? Why is his index finger longer than his middle finger?

@ all the superior spiderman haters- is it worse to read a comic that other people dont like and enjoy it, or to spend so much time dedicated to hating on others enjoying something that you dont have to involve yourself in at all? Just wondering.

Whatever. I'm not picking it up my mate is giving me the digital code. I've read the first 3 and they are poor at best. But I don't care about 616 spidey anymore, I'll start caring again when slott leaves.

@KarlKingNerd- I never insulted anyone who read this comic. But I am calling this crap out for what it truly is: A publicity stunt. The only reason this was done was because sales for Spider-Man have been down since JMS left after the abomination that was One More Day. Speaking of which, I think I'll go look back at JMS' run and remember the good old days.

@Splenda- He probably learned his craft at the Liefeld School of "Art."

To quote Archer: "Doy and/or Hello"!

It was a giant stunt move by Marvel. Of course people are going to buy #1 just to see how terrible the fallout really is (and yes - it's terrible. Some of the worst Spidey writing in decades). The problem with all stunt marketing like this is that you see an increase for the first little bit while the "I can't believe he did that" effect is still going. However, then you get a sharp drop and steady decline about 3-6 issues in when people realize that it's just as bad as they thought. It's temporary gains placed over long term losses.

That's why they're already making moves to bring Peter Parker back. That's why things like Marvel Now and The New 52 only work for so long. And when they start to dip in numbers they'll blame it on something else and do the next giant stunt. Marvel is doing the equivalent of a "going out of business" sale - people flood in for the event, but after a couple "going out of business" sales... people just stop coming. It's the business equivalent of The Boy Who Cried Wolf.

You're just making crap up. Pulling conjecture out of your ass.

Numbers don't lie.

This just proves Marvel knows what they are doing and all the whinny haters here are completely irrelevant.

BECAUSE MODERN SOCIETY IS A SOCIETY OF HATERS

THEY LOVE TO HATE AND WILL DO ANYTHING TO HATE WHEREVER THEY CAN

So does this mean Slott's a genius, or is the world of comic readers that easy to troll?
