Jonathan Hickman's Ultimate Invasion series has followed the Ultimate Reed Richards, The Maker, as he rebuilds Earth-1610 - now Earth-6160 - in his image. That's led to some seismic changes, including a Peter Parker who never became Spider-Man and an Iron Man who is Howard Stark instead of Tony.
We don't anticipate those changes sticking, though they may still be a glimpse of what the new Ultimate Universe will look like; after all, it's no secret that this limited series will conclude with its creation.
The original line launched in the early 2000s with The Ultimates and titles revolving around characters such as Spider-Man, the X-Men, and Fantastic Four. Unfortunately, everything started falling apart when Jeph Loeb got involved and it was Hickman who brought a seemingly permanent end to Earth-1610 in the pages of Secret Wars.
Earlier this year, it was reported that the new Ultimate Universe line will include Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men and, perhaps most surprisingly, Ultimate Black Panther. There's going to be a fourth comic which, while not confirmed, is expected to be The Ultimates (they're this reality's Avengers).
Now, the first of those has been officially announced by Marvel Comics: Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto's Ultimate Spider-Man.
"Jonathan Hickman’s Ultimate Invasion limited series spawns an entire new Ultimate Universe, complete with a new Ultimate Spider-Man," reads a brief teaser shared by Marvel Comics. "Get more details next month at New York Comic Con."
As of now, we don't know whether Peter Parker will be beneath the mask but we're expecting Miles Morales to remain part of the main Marvel Universe. With that in mind, we can't discount the possibility this will be a new character who becomes Spider-Man!
Needless to say, with such an impressive creative team, something tells us we're in for an exciting ride. Brian Michael Bendis' lengthy stint writing Ultimate Spider-Man spawned plenty of amazing stories and we're sure the same will be the case here no matter who wears the mask. There's not long to go before official details are shared so you'll want to check back here during New York Comic-Con starting October 12.
