Marvel vs. DC: Breaking Ground on The Cold War

Marvel vs. DC: Breaking Ground on The Cold War

It has begun! The arms race between these two super powers of comic book fandom has escalated to new heights in the feature film and television space. Let's see what happens next...

A new cold war for the golden age of comic book films/TV has broken out in the public view. I’ve been looking to express my thoughts on this new arms race for quite some time and even though some substantial time has paced since the announcement of the DC and Marvel feature film slates, I feel now is a good time to come out of the woodwork as I sense the beginning of the competitive spirit between these two superhero powerhouses rising to a fever pitch. With Marvel’s announcement of the cooperative deal for the Spiderman franchise and with DC beginning to market the never before seen big screen versions of its Justice League members such as Aquaman, we can say we’ve reached the next stage in this arm’s race. I’ll be writing several short editorials over time on this DC/Marvel Cold War as I highlight specific aspects of it.

With the revelation that DC will be introducing Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Marvel forged forward in a frenzy to create Captain America: Civil War and even struck a deal with Sony to allegedly include Spiderman in the movie. What has Marvel so worked up with the competition that they are throwing everything into the Captain America threequel? While Marvel struck Hollywood gold first with the MCU, DC has concentrated its efforts more on television and arguably surpassed Marvel with their plethora of DC based television shows airing or soon to be airing. What’s next for both companies in the television space?

I’ll start to hypothesize and throw out conspiracy theories for your enjoyment in subsequent editorials on different aspects of this battle of wits. Until then, enjoy what we’ll be getting from both DC and Marvel. The next editorial will explore the ensemble casts for each company and the jockeying for position we’ve seen along with what it means for the future of ensemble casts.

There still would've been an attempt at a DCCU without an MCU.

Feige hinted at CIVIL WAR at the 2012 SDCC.

marvel will definitely beat dc... especially with all the comic movies coming out. dc missed their chance to get the brand recognition marvel has. all dc really has is batman.

GOTG proves that marvel is a trusted studio that makes great movies. and before you hate on me im just stating the obvious fact. marvel are on top. and with disney they will be unstoppable until the genre begins to die down

could you imagine if disney bought dc? they would probably start putting dc and marvel characters together.

DC and Marvel is the dumbest rivalry in the history of rivalries.

It's not even a rivalry. Yankees/Red Sox is a rivalry. Lakers/Celtics is a rivalry.

We've had Jim Lee, Grant Morrison, Frank Miller, Jack Kirby, Jim Starlin, Mike Mignola, Alan Moore, Mark Waid, Alex Ross, and many other comic legends work for BOTH DC AND MARVEL.

You would never see Magic go to Boston or Ted Williams go to NY or see Emmitt Smith play for the Redskins.

Only people who think there is a rivalry between DC and Marvel are the fans.

Leave those analogies away.

They are two seperate companies who are trying to make money from the same crowd.
That leads to competition.
It's basically surviving and the prevail of the stronger.
Exists from day one.

People see to think DC controls what DC can do in films.

Newsflash, they don't. They can't. WB owns them. Same way with Marvel. People seem to forget all the Phrase 1 films didn't have big budgets.

Paramount gave the following budgets to Phrase 1 films.

Iron Man 140 million
Incredible Hulk 150 million
Iron Man 2 200 million (to it's credit, IM1 was a financial success so there is no reason why not to give it a larger budget)
Thor 150 million
Cap 140 million

That's not a lot. I mean it is but it's not like 200 million for TASM2 or MOS or TDKR or Avengers or GL. It's a budget where you know it's not a complete risk and you will earn money back.

But you know Universal can't seem to give del Toro 120 million for Hellboy 3 and maybe even split the budget with Legendary considering Hellboy 2 grossed 165 million but that's a conversation for another day.

Yea Avengers got a shit ton but after have financial success with all but one film, you would give it a bigger budget.

The only reason Marvel got the opportunity to do a Cinematic Universe is because of X-Men and Spider-Man movies (you know the Marvel films y'all fanboys hate even though Spider-Man 2 ethers the entire MCU) because Marvel was going bankrupt.

Point is, DC has been owned by WB. Marvel was on it's on. DC didn't have the freedom.

Now with this own "DC IS COPYING MARVEL'S CINEMATIC UNIVERSE"......

It's not who does what first but what you do with what you have. It doesn't matter Marvel started their universe first. All that matters is what you do with universe and if you make keep making good films with your universe.

@Cartman is Kingpin who was Batmaniac?

GODDAMNIT MAN HOW MANY MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES DO YOU HAVE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

@Cartman
Your comment is true but doesn't represent the whole truth and it's not a fair comparison.
You went full retard there.
Marvel does that, i guess.
I mean it's just like saying that a man going to medical school with no knowledge of medicine isn't a better doctor than a successfull and established doctor.Don't compare them like that!

And LOL!Are you really Batmaniac?
How ridiculous and embarassing would that be?
