SHANG-CHI: Marvel Comics To Give The Ten Rings An MCU-Style Makeover In The Hero's Solo Series This May

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings reinvented The Mandarin's Ten Rings (and the villain himself), and those changes will soon be reflected in the Marvel Comics Universe.

In May's Shang-Chi #12, the hero's greatest enemies have gathered under his vengeful grandfather and in order to protect his bloodline, Shang-Chi will have to confront his dark side and unleash the power he was destined to wield: The Ten Rings! As you can see on Leinil Yu's cover for the issue, they look far more in line with the rings wielded by this character's big screen counterpart.

The consequences of Shang-Chi using the Ten Rings will have a major impact on his role in the wider Marvel Universe, and further complicate his already tense relationship with the Avengers.

Writer Gene Luen Yang and artist Marcus To's Shang-Chi run has revealed long-hidden secrets about Shang-Chi's origins, introduced readers to his warrior siblings, and saw him sacrifice his good standing with Earth's Mightiest Heroes in order to honour his newly found family.

Now, Earth is under attack from Shang-Chi’s grandfather and the forces of Ta Lo and to save his world, Shang-Chi must succumb to his late father's wishes and inherit the deadly Ten Rings. But will he be able to wield its power, or will its temptations be too much? We'll find out this May.

Check out Shang-Chi #12's awesome cover below:

This was inevitable. Marvel Comics did the exact thing with Guardians Of The Galaxy after the first movie came out, Ultimate Iron Man after the first movie, and the list goes on...

@MeAreLegend - it’s sad marvel makes new comics from old characters fans have not saw in years but in dc comics they use those characters when they can fits in books regardless they show up in movies tv shows or not

@MeAreLegend - what did they change in the comics for Iron Man that made him more inline with the MCU?

@WruceBayne - Generally made him a bit more like Downey’s portrayal I think, which was more in line with the Ultimate comics.

@WruceBayne - They basically gave him the Iron-Man armor design from the movies.

Surely, millions of people who saw the movie are going to start reading comics now...

No matter if we like it or not, the movies are successful enough to make Marvel change the source material. Sometimes it's a good thing. Often it's not.

Personally I would have preferred movie versions of the Mandarin, the 10 rings and Fin Fang Foom that were closer to their counterparts in the comics and Iron Man TAS.

@ChrisRed - that’s sad really marvel changes comics from movies sometimes they change comics to fit movies tv shows.,

I’m glad Dc doesn’t do that with there comics and characters

I hate this. The comics should be the source material, not the other way around. Changing comics to fit in with the movies is not a good move, in my opinion.

The comics are what made these characters and worlds popular enough to even warrant movies. If you change that then you are already taking a risk of making something people won't like as much.

I liked Shang Chi but I’m not a fan of the ten rings change up. I would’ve preferred the original ten rings from the comics or call the new rings something different. Didn’t have to change the rings to bracelets and it felt like they wasted the character of the Mandarin again. That being said I do look forward to seeing what they do with ShangChi in the MCU.

@slickrickdesigns - To be fair, they weren’t called the Ten Rings in the comics before, they were just The Mandarin’s Rings or the Makulan Rings. Actually, these will probably be different items completely than the ones Mandarin uses so technically these would be just new artifacts unique to Shang-Chi.

Ten bracelets, you wear it around your wrist and up your arm its a bracelet.

@marvel72 - tell that to the Chinese and their Iron Rings
OmegaBlack13

@marvel72 - You are aware a ring can be any circular object?
marvel72
marvel72 - 2/9/2022, 4:52 PM
@OmegaBlack13 - Still wears them like a bracelet.

@marvel72 - Do you say onion bracelets? Refuse to acknowledge those things around Saturn? Only call the thing boxers compete in a square? Just wondering where we're drawing the line here.

I liked the idea of the movie changing it from rings worn on the fingers to rings worn on the wrists.

I don't even mind the comics changing it too, but this just feels more like a blatant copy of the movies. Especially with the involvement of Ta Lo
Evansly
Evansly - 2/9/2022, 10:16 AM
@bkmeijer - Until I'm told otherwise my head canon is that they are finger rings to the dragon so they'd be too big for human hand thus bracelets
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 2/9/2022, 2:29 PM
@Evansly - that's a pretty fun reasoning. Could see that be the case yeah

SYNERGY! But really, is this a "just for the cover" thing, or are the mandarin's 10 rings like the movies now?
OmegaBlack13
OmegaBlack13 - 2/9/2022, 11:08 AM
@oldnoname - I haven’t been reading this series, is the Mandarin now revealed to be his father or grandfather? If not then I’m guessing these are new rings.

Or they could leave the two mediums separate... Let the MCU be for the wider and general audiences, damn.
