The THUNDERBOLTS Strike Down On The Marvel Comics Universe With A New Lineup And Mission This August

Hot on the heels of the news that a Thunderbolts movie will be released in 2024, Marvel Comics has shared a new look at Jim Zub's new ongoing comic book series starring the likes of Hawkeye and Spectrum.

In the wake of Devil's Reign, superheroes have been outlawed in New York City but starting next month, a new team of authorized heroes will assemble in Thunderbolts #1

The five-issue limited series will be written by former Thunderbolts scribe Jim Zub and illustrated by artist Sean Izaakse, known for his recent work on Fantastic Four: Life Story. In the classic Thunderbolts tradition, Zub and Izaakse will introduce an unexpected lineup that mixes together iconic Marvel superheroes, fan-favourite breakout stars, conflicted anti-heroes, and exciting newcomers.

Carefully selected by Mayor Luke Cage to bring justice like lightning throughout his city, the new team will be led by Hawkeye and include Spectrum, America Chavez, Power Man, and Kara Killgrave, a.k.a. Persuasion. Also joining this ragtag squad be new two new recruits: mystery man and experienced supersoldier Gutsen Glory, and debuting in issue #2, a strange creature known as Eegro the Unbreakable.

The team’s first mission will be taking down Kingpin’s own corrupt Thunderbolts that wreaked havoc throughout the Devil's Reign saga and restoring the team’s name in an action-packed brawl Marvel Comics says you won’t want to miss.

"A lot of times people will look at a cast of characters and say, 'This team lineup is different so this isn't the team I want,' but, it's like you said, the Thunderbolts have gone through so many iterations," Zub said in an interview with CBR. "There have been incarnations where they're purely criminal, others where they're criminals trying to be heroes, and everything in between, but I've always felt like, at their heart, the Thunderbolts are a team struggling for redemption."

"Individual members and the team as a whole struggled to dig themselves out of their worst selves or resist the natural pull of who they've been in the past," he concluded. "So, for me, redemption is the heart of the Thunderbolts concept."

Thunderbolts #1 arrives in comic book stores on August 31. Check out a first look below with interior artwork by Sean Izaaske, and covers from Sean Izaakse & Chris O'Halloran, David Nakayama, Paulo Siqueira & Rachelle Rosenberg, Stefano Caselli & Federico Blee, and Todd Nauck.

The new dude is very reminiscent of a '90s Cable rip-off with a Rob Leifield twist

@inkniron - It's intended. This news is very old.

@inkniron - Yeah. And he just casually takes out Abomination like it's no big thing.

Abomination. The guy that gives Hulk a run for his money. Right.

@TheUnknownX - his name is Gutsen Glory(Cringe). I guess he’s somebody new or with probably end up being Cable in disguise because another Skrull invasion is coming.

As much as I love some of these characters (especially Spectrum) this lineup is complete garbage.

@bobevanz - The way team rosters are constantly changing in comics? No. It won't. Thunderbolts will have had 2 more roster changes by the time the movie comes out.

This... is not what the Thunderbolts are supposed to be :/

Anyway, Gutsen Glory.....................

Anyone worried about the Thunderbolts film, I doubt this will be the lineup. This isn't the team Valentina is recruiting.
Scarilian
Scarilian - 7/28/2022, 9:34 PM
@comicfan100 -
I'd lean towards Valentina being the Nick Fury style character for the all-female film that Feige was talking about after Endgame.

In which case the team is probably:
Sharon Carter (Agent 13)
Kate Bishop (Hawkeye)
Yelena Belova (Black Widow)
Ava Starr (Ghost)
Monica Rambeau (Spectrum)
America Chavez (Miss America)

comicfan100 - 7/28/2022, 9:50 PM
@Scarilian - Nah, she's definitely recruiting the Thunderbolts. You're thinking about A-Force which would probably be lead by She-Hulk.

Characters that could be on the Thunderbolts
US Agent
Black Widow (Yelena)
Abomination
Winter Soldier
Ghost
Taskmaster
Zemo
And maybe some newcomers like Songbird, Atlas, Beetle or Techno

@comicfan100 - This would be a cool lineup.

“This team lineup is different so this isn't the team I want“

Yep. I’m not on board, Thunderbolts peaked with Red Hulk team imo.

Scarilian - 7/28/2022, 9:31 PM
I'm massively leaning towards the Thunderbolts film project being the 'all-female' team that Feige teased a while ago.

In which case the line-up for the movie is probably:
Sharon Carter (Agent 13), Kate Bishop (Hawkeye), Yelena Belova (Black Widow), Ava Starr (Ghost), Monica Rambeau (Spectrum) and America Chavez (Miss America) brought together by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Madame Hydra) who serves as a Nick Fury to the group until they reveal her as evil.

As far as the MCU line up goes

I'll fan plot it as

Contessa, in a later movie, is killed and Zemo in s unceremoniously ousted from his leadership role when Justin Hammer takes the team and redevelops them as his own Dark Avengers-esque group and uses the villains to reform a version of SHIELD called HAMMER

Thunderbolts

-Main adversaries of the team are Widow and Echo amongst others

-the team is meant to truly be reformed villains but Zemo has his own plans until certain members the team actually consider themselves heroes
Operations: Contessa
1. Leader: Zemo
2. Unhappy to be second-in-command is USAgent
3. Titania (Abomination won’t survive the She-Hulk series)
4. Ghost (rather than Songbird)
5. Wonder Man
6. Grim Reaper (there must be a more wholesome name)
7. Bullseye as Ronin

Later, West Coast Avengers
1. Leader: USAgent
2. Widow
3. Echo
4. Ghost
6. Wonder Man
7. Winter Soldier
8. (White) Vision

HAMMER
Operations: Justin Hammer
1. Leader: Andrea von Strucker
2. Andreas von Strucker (I also want these 2, more so than on this team, a part of the Hellfire Club (I have a very detailed idea about that organization if anyone cares)
3. Grim Reaper
4. Titania
5. Bullseye
6. Moonstone

I wonder if Hercules and She-Hulk will fit into this and if Stature was referring to this team in the teaser. As well, with High Evolutionary announced, this could be a new origin for Tigra or even the right time to use Jessica Drew.

I'd also like the Freedom Force (who go rogue either under cover or outing themselves as the Brotherhood) and Alpha Flight (I cast Talos and Soren as Guardian and Vindicator) to be used as the American and Canadian versions of the Avengers when the time comes

Hawkeye should lead an Avengers team in Boston with the Avengers West Coast lineup with a lineup of Quicksilver Hercules Wonder Man Tigra Mockingbird the Scarlet Witch and new member Sundragon.
JermareCBM
JermareCBM - 7/29/2022, 12:42 AM
@encyclopedicmin - Why Boston? The West Coast Avengers exist for a reason.

It's interesting how the comics are going for movie type teams and the movies are going for comic type teams.
