TIMELESS: Marvel Comics Teases A Wild New Status Quo For The X-Men That May Tie Into Marvel Studios' Plans

Marvel Comics will end the X-Men's Krakoa era in 2024, and there's been a great deal of speculation about what that means for these characters. Well, thanks to today's Timeless #1, we have a glimpse into the team's future on the page.

Our friends over at Bleeding Cool have shared a panel from the issue revealing that Magneto will be using Professor X's floating wheelchair and leading a team that's comprised of Cyclops and a few other unknown mutants.

What's interesting about this is that Marvel Studios' X-Men '97 will also make Magneto the leader of the X-Men. We've seen the studio embrace those '90s-style visuals in live-action during Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' Professor X cameo and it now seems the comics will follow suit.

With Kevin Feige overseeing all forms of Marvel content, we can't help but wonder whether he's pushed for this change as it's indicative of what we'll be seeing in the MCU moving forward. After all, this wouldn't be the first time that's happened.

Other teases in the issue include the Green Goblin's return, Blade fighting The Hulk, The Punisher vs. the new Punisher, Captain America vs. Iron Man, Doctor Strange and Clea having a child, and some sort of Doctor Strange/Doctor Doom hybrid.

It's probably going to be a couple of months before we learn more about Marvel Comics' X-Men plans, but we're intrigued to see where the team is heading and what it will mean for the Master of Magnetism to lead the heroes into battle. Perhaps Charles Xavier is about to die all over again?

Timeless #1 is now available in comic book stores.

So why can't we have Professor X in charge of The X-Men in the movies. I know Magneto was leader at one stage but it was built up to.

In a perfect world I'd like the original five and add the likes of Wolverine,Storm,Colossus and Nightcrawler in say the sequel.

Or just adapt Jim Lee's X-Men line up.

@marvel72 - Because Feige wants to be different. Literally the only reason.

@AvalonX - I have a feeling people are going to miss the Fox X-Men movies.

@marvel72 - Yeahm they are totally screwing this up. Mags will probably be morally corrupt with one of the woman being the moral compass.

@AvalonX - Are you talking about the upcoming movies or comic books?
AvalonX
AvalonX - 12/27/2023, 3:06 PM
@HammerLegFoot - The movies but who knows, probably both. The movies are now driving the plot lines in the comics instead of the other way around. Carol is leading the Avengers and Sam is one of the Captain America's. Ms. Marvel is a mutant in the comics now too and part of the X-men. Its all screwed up.

bkmeijer1 - 12/27/2023, 4:37 PM
@marvel72 - the original five in the first movie and Giant-Size is what I wanna see too. Third one can be the Infinity War of the X-Men with all of them.

@AvalonX - I’m tired of that excuse. “Different” does NOT mean better or interesting.

@bkmeijer1 - Exactly right, I would say Days Of Future Past being the third movie.

But I have a feeling they'll go for...

@bkmeijer1 - I can live without the original 5. My lineup is close to the cartoon:
Scott
Jean
Colossus
Kitty
Storm
Kurt
Beast

Have Rogue and Gambit on the brotherhood but they turn good. Tease Logan in the end credits. I really don't need Warren or Bobby. Warren is only cool when hes archangel. The cartoon was pretty smart the way they dealt with former X-men. They just kind of showed up for an episode here and there. Sinister is obsessed with Scott and Jean and Remy has a history with him.

@marvel72 -
Chris Claremont version or bust. Personally I would love to have them start with the original 5, Cyclops, Jean Gray, Iceman, Angel and Beast. Work your way up from there. The Claremont version was woke before there was such a thing. It had all races, creeds and colors represented and it was cool as shite.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 12/27/2023, 8:02 PM
@marvel72 - cuz Feige sucks
McMurdo
McMurdo - 12/27/2023, 8:07 PM
@Goldboink - no it wasn't woke. Having multiple cultures and races doesn't make something woke. Having black, Russian, Asian, Catholic characters doesn't make something woke. pandering self righteousness guised as virtue is woke. It's veiled narcissism essentially. Ripley wasn't woke because she had a vagina she was simply a well written protagonist. A believable protagonist

Hopefully this is not the inspiration for a MCU adaptation.
Fogs
Fogs - 12/27/2023, 4:29 PM
@mountainman - Damn, if it happens it will be a shame. The early MCU was great on adapting their heroes' origins to the big screen. Such a downfall if they drop the ball with the X-Men or F4.
mountainman
mountainman - 12/27/2023, 5:58 PM
@Fogs - The original Avengers movie had most of the original team with several people who have been long time members. They didn’t try pulling in more recent lineups or alternate takes on characters.

They NEED to give us an iconic X-Men before any big changes like this.
Fogs
Fogs - 12/27/2023, 6:02 PM
@mountainman - I wish... but to be honest I'm not too optimistic. They're not the same as they were in '08 or '12.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 1/1/2024, 4:04 PM
@mountainman - The original Avengers movie only had 3 original Avengers: Hulk, Iron Man, and Thor. Captain America, Hawkeye, and Black Widow all came later. And they left out Ant-Man and Wasp altogether.
mountainman
mountainman - 1/1/2024, 6:05 PM
@CorndogBurglar - I said “most”. 3/5 is most. Cap joined in the 4th issue and Hawkeye in the 16th. Black Widow was the only member of that movie roster that wasn’t in the comic team for a while after they were formed.

That movie also featured the villain from the first issue, although a much different scenario.

If we took this same general concept and applied to the X-Men, the first roster on screen would be several founding members - let’s say Prof X, Scott and Jean - and several members that joined shortly afterwards - such as Polaris, Havok - and one that joined much later - example Storm.

That original issue villain was Magneto, but I imagine the MCU won’t use him as the first antagonist, which is fine. I just don’t want them to have Magneto leading the team or to incorporate more modern elements like the Krakoa era.

We’ve discussed this before. I’d prefer a mix of the OG lineup and the Giant Sized one for the first movie. Have the first trilogy mainly pull from the Claremont era. That would make most fans happy.

All Disney Marvel have to do to make their X-Men movies different to the Fox ones.

Make them comic book accurate, something we haven't seen before.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 12/27/2023, 4:41 PM
@marvel72 - and have Cyclops as team leader. And have a villain we haven't seen before (like Sinister) as overarching villain.
marvel72
marvel72 - 12/27/2023, 4:50 PM
@bkmeijer1 -

Mr.Sinister would eventually show up.

I also think maybe The Savage Land, The Hellfire Club and The Marauders.

Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 12/27/2023, 5:17 PM
@marvel72 - I for the most part liked the fox xmen movies but this is exactly why I and everyone else were excited to see Disney get the rights to the xmen. If they go against this the MCU may finally go the way of the DCEU.

They can get another phase 1-3 level of success going again if they just dont [frick] around too much.
mountainman
mountainman - 12/27/2023, 5:59 PM
@bkmeijer1 - I’m ok with Cyclops and Storm fighting over leadership - similar to how Steve and Tony were basically Avengers co-leads, but it should be Scott at first.
Fogs
Fogs - 12/27/2023, 6:08 PM
@mountainman - problem is both Scott and Ororo GREW UP to become real X-Men's leaders, each at their turn.

It was awesome to see Ororo's progress, from the naïve girl she was in the All-New X-Men to the badass she was in their Australian arc. But... Hollywood recent track on female heroes doesn't allow character progress like that anymore, with rare exceptions. Apparently they always need to be the all-knowing girl boss from the get go. Don't expect much on that front either.
marvel72
marvel72 - 12/27/2023, 6:17 PM
@Ryguy88 - I remember the rivalry you and I had.

I agree,X-Men 2,X-Men:Days Of Future Past and Logan were probably for me the best of the bunch.

The idea of seeing The Fantastic Four and The X-Men interact with The Avengers is a dream come true and something I never thought would have ever happened.

This shouldn't be hard to make good but Disney Marvel know how to f*ck shit up.
mountainman
mountainman - 12/27/2023, 6:32 PM
@Fogs - The X-Men have some of the best female heroes in all of comics. But they are all flawed characters that have earned their status. None of them are girl boss types and the MCU had better not depict them that way.
