UPDATE: Marvel Announce Their Next Big Event "Fear Itself"!

Thanks to Comic Book Resources for the following highlights from the panel: (you can find more by following the link above)

"What happens when fear gets so prevalent that it seems the norm?" he said, and added that the line between hero and villain will be blurred... and crossed.

Matt Fraction spoke about the series in another video, adding that the Marvel heroes would be fighting the god of fear. "You will not feel underserved on any level," Fraction said. "We are going to be busting the doors down with the biggest story we've ever told."

Brevoort acknowledged that fans had asked for a break from big events and Marvel largely took the last year off, but is now returning with a story "as ambitious as 'Civil War.'" The series itself will be 7-issues, and Ed Brubaker will be writing a prelude with Cap and Namor, with a title to be named later.

"There is a concealed act at the center of the Marvel universe that was committed a number of years ago, and it will change everything," Brevoort said. "And that, in essence, is what 'Fear Itself' is all about."

Brevoort brought Alonso on stage and, before handing the mic over, noted that readers can choose to just read the core series but many series will also be involved.

Alsono took over saying "Fear Itself" is "an extinction-level event." "It's a major event that involves everyone--expect major participation from X-Men, from Dracula ... and alliances you wouldn't have expected."

Brevoort added that Marvel had been "setting up some dominoes" for a while now, some of which readers will have recognized and others will have been glossed over.

Brevoort would not say anything more about "Fantastic Four," but "whatever's left of the 'FF' after that deathbag issue, they will be involved."

The first issue of "Fear Itself" will be about 45 pages, and the final issue will probably also be oversized. The price point is expected to be $3.99.

"Fear Itself" will have afterefects reverberating throughout the Marvel Universe, Brevoort said. "It will be a sad story that they refer to again and again and again until you are sick of hearing about it."

i like how they say they took the last year off from big events. Isn't that how it always is? the big events are during the summer? didn't Siege just end? I fail to see how they aren't still flooding everyone with big events.

anyway, this is the same old, same old. "This event will change everything. It will have lasting effects. blah blah blah."

right, "lasting effects", at least until next year's big event comes along and changes everything again...

oh well, as long as its better than Siege, i guess i won't complain. Siege was the biggest waste of a story ever. The series was only 4 issues, and they didn't even focus on anything happening. Then the Void shows up, "the baddest threat ever", and what does he do? He floats in the air and lets everyone shoot him and kill him. He doesn't even attack anyone. wow, great story telling...

I am so happy that they're allowing another writer to take charge of an event like this. Enough with Bendis! The guy is a great writer, but "Civil War" proved that it's good to have another creator in to freshen things up. Matt Fraction + Stuart Immonen = EPIC [frick]ING WIN!!!

It's an intriguing idea though. After so many "vs" events, it'll be great to see the heroes all on the same side and taking on a single powerful villain. I like the fact that it will somehow be linked to The Invaders...it's going to be really interesting to see how it develops as seven issue is going to have a lot more twists and turns that the heroes just fighting this God of Fear guy!

Tittie: Lol, don't let it stop you contributing man! I just had this article ready to post as soon as the conference was over! Better luck next time anyway mate! :)

ANIL: Good questions. I'm liking that top 8, although I'd probably take out Reed and put in Spider-Man instead. All Bendis ever did in events like "Secret Invasion" and "Siege" was have him making annoying wisecracks. I'd like to see Fraction handle him a little better and make him a major part of this thing.

whats with the old guy? i thought the god of fear is phobos???

@anil- i hope he doesnt turn into "the old god of fear", cuz it would be so much cooler if he were a kid who is the god of fear thats still pissed off about his dad gettin ripped in half by the sentry (who says siege sucked? you musta missed THAT issue)

@josh- i totally agree with you about spidey being misused in all these "big events". his role in civil war was cool with iron man and the suit, but he didnt show up in siege (which revolved around HIS BADGUY, norman osborne) until the very end. hopefully he plays a bigger part.... (i just hope they dont tease killing him off again like the ultimate u....)

- dracula is whack. the whole vampire/xmen thing was a bad idea from the beginning. the rest of the world is finally letting go of the twilight fad and here comes marvel making dracula an xman... damnit

- buckys gotta give up the shield soon because of caps movie comin out, i bet thats the big "nothing will be the same" tragedy, phobos rips bucky in half just like sentry did to his daddy....

- same with black panther, daredevil is supposed to be "reborn" around april, so tchalla needs to take his ass back to the jungle.

- the teasers are sweet, especially cyclops holding magnetos helmet, im intrigued as to what all that means.....

Rip off Marvel does it again! lmao And just as the Green Lantern comes around too!
I'm fed up with big crossovers forcing me to buy books I'm not interested in just so I can follow the plots in the ones I do want to buy.A cheap sales tactic that shows no respect for their readers!

Ok heres my Theory...we've recently just had the Chaos war which involved Amatsu-Mikaboshi becoming the Chaos King and generally making a nuisance of himself and taking on the pantheon's of Earths Gods...

In the 2006 Ares: God or War mini series Alexander (Phobos) was kidnapped and brainwashed by Amatsu-Mikaboshi....

Although this brainwash was supposed to have been undone by Zeus and Ares maybe it wasnt...and this will lead into Phobos attacking Earth...dunno just a thought...
