The legendary Chris Claremont, the writer who defined the X-Men and crafted the franchise's most influential stories, returns with a brand new saga this July starring one of his most popular co-creations, Gambit.

Featuring artwork by rising star Sid Kotian, Gambit will be a five-issue limited series that invites fans back to the exciting time when Gambit and a de-aged Storm forged an everlasting bond as they thieved their way along the Mississippi River. Along the way, the series will unearth a wide range of previously untold adventures, from a brush with the Shadow King to an array of earthbound and out-of-this-world escapades.

All of those will give Claremont a chance to further explore Gambit's path to becoming a heroic X-Man as well as reveal new insights into another trademark character of his, Storm, at a pivotal moment in her history.

You can now get your first look at a story that promises action, intrigue and revenge thanks to new interior artwork and variant covers by all-star artists Salvador Larroca, Peach Momoko, Scott Williams, and InHyuk Lee.

Asked by AiPT Comics why he chose to revisit this specific era, Claremont said: "Because I considered it somewhere that provided the opportunity for a whole-lotta-fun to be had by all involved. Think about it: who notices kids? The way Remy dresses, not to mention his great body and gorgeous looks, most of the time all eyes turn towards him."

"[Kid] 'Ro remains functionally invisible. Target looks to Remy, 'Ro picks his pocket. But the true reason, frankly, is that the story turned out to be a whole lot more fun this way."

Claremont actually wrote a story outline for the Gambit movie starring Channing Tatum that was scrapped when Disney acquired Fox. Whether he'll bring any of those ideas into this limited series remains to be seen, but any time he returns to the Marvel Universe is good news for comic book fans.

Gambit #1 arrives in comic book stores on July 27.

The production name for X-Men '97 is teen spirit, I hope they don't [frick] it up. Also I wonder if they'll recast Cyclops or use a different voice actor, I'm so bummed he won't back..

@bobevanz - use the cop from The Blacklist.
In another lifetime, he would've been The Guy for Cyclops.

On topic: I didn't know Chris Claremont was writing the Gambit script!!!
Run that shit back! Tatum for Gambit, Hamm for Sinister! Leggo!!!

@bobevanz - I mean, it's not like he CAN come back. He passed away. They'll have no choice but to recast.

Second and Fifth covers are dope. Got that classic 90s Xmen esthetic I always loved.

I haven't kept up with comics in probably a good 8 or 9 years.... round it up to a decade maybe. Had no idea Storm was deaged. This looks interesting, but likely won't make me go out and read it unless I hear great things. But I haven't heard "great things" about any DC or Marvel comics in... well 8 to 9 years... about a decade.

@UGLYsonic - Storm was de-aged back in the early 90's/late 80's. This story takes place back then when Storm and Gambit first met.

@CorndogBurglar - huh, I completely missed that arc. I've only ever known her to be an adult.

@UGLYsonic - Yeah, it was back before Extinction Agenda. She was de-aged before that and Gambit was a new member of the team in that story.

Can't wait to see Gambit in the MCU. I would so love to have seen Channing Tatum or Josh Holloway as Gambit in the last two decades, I think it is too late for them now to play the character now.

Imagine if Ted Danson played the Ragin' Cajun in the '90s? Back then he would definitely look the part and act the part, he would have been a choice actor as Remy LeBeau...

Just remembered. I would like to see French actor Lucas Bravo to play Gambit. He in the Lily Collins' Netflix show Emily in Paris. He is great and very likable in that show.

@KitFisto - he is definitely in the right age, Is there any fan art of him? He's got that "pretty boy" look to him & Gambit is kinda rugged in his appearances.

That’d be awesome if they got him to co-write with a film writer whenever Marvel Studios gets around to doing an X-men movie.
