MARVEL'S VOICES: PRIDE #1 Reveals First Look At New Transgender Mutant Superhero Escapade

Marvel Comics promised to introduce a new character in the pages of this June's Marvel's Voices: Pride #1, and it's now been confirmed that Escapade will join the ranks of the Marvel Universe's LGBTQIA+ superheroes. The mutant will debut in the comic's central story, written by author Charlie Jane Anders and illustrated by Eisner-nominated cartoonists Ro Stein and Ted Brandt.

Escapade, whose real name is Shela Sexton, is described as a trans mutant who can instantaneously switch physical locations with another person or trade any specific physical or abstract attribute such as possessions, organizational status, skills, superhuman powers, and even situations.

The mutant is only able to maintain the power for a few hours at a time and must be within 7 feet of her target, and the more complex the switch, the higher the chance of a mishap. Luckily for Escapade, she has an invaluable partner at her side, her tech-savvy best friend Morgan Red, along with a tool belt containing an arsenal of stolen tools and devices. Together, Escapade and Morgan tear through the Marvel Universe as professional thieves, stealing from criminal and corrupt organizations...until a meeting with Emma Frost and Destiny will change the course of Escapade’s life forever.

"I have loved the Marvel Universe for as long as I can remember, so I was so thrilled to be able to introduce a brand-new hero to stand alongside all of my favorites," Anders says. "I hope that Escapade and Morgan Red will inspire trans and non-binary people everywhere to believe that they, too, can fight for justice with the power of creativity and chosen family."

It sounds like Escapade will have a bright future in the Marvel Universe as it's said her life as a trans mutant will continue to be explored in an upcoming New Mutants arc also written by Anders.

Marvel's Voices: Pride #1 will be released in comic book stores on June 22.

Idk if making the first transgender character a MUTANT was the smartest idea lol and her power is switching? A Trans character with switching powers..... yikes.

And SEXton? Really?

@ElricReturns -

lol exactly. further more, mutants can be basically anything. being trans would be the least interesting part of being a mutant

@HeraldNumber7 - it's not bad enough every minority character has to have ethnic or heritage based powers or themes, now Trans characters have to have Trans themed powers and naming conventions?

This is gonna be hilarious watching this go up in flames as the backlash from this tone deaf attempt at diversity baiting blows up in their faces, because half ass shit like this only shows how out of touch they actually are.

Yeah, no. This will crash and burn and this character will be forgotten about super fast.

@ElricReturns - taking over attributes of another person is a weird power.

I might be wrong, but shouldn't we be normalizing that trans people are people with idententies of their own too? Why would they need to take over that of another person? Feels like the complete opposite

Drace24 - 5/13/2022, 10:17 AM
@ElricReturns - Well, mutants always were a loose allegory for pretty much any marginalized group. I don't think that's an issue.
ElricReturns
ElricReturns - 5/13/2022, 10:27 AM
@Drace24 - I get that, but just the nature of Trans issues being biology based and mutants literally being biology based... something you are at birth and have no control over making you "different".... I'm not sure calling the first Trans character a mutant was the best way to introduce a Trans character to the superhero community.

Why couldn't it be just a Trans person who was given a super powered ability by some other means? Why do they have to be a mutant? And why the power to switch?

It's all TOO on the nose, to the point where it's borderline offensive.

Trans character being a mutant with switching powers with the last name SEXton... with them being THAT on the nose I'm surprised her superhero name isn't like The Transitionist or Post Operator or some shit.

@ElricReturns - lol and of course she dyes her hair blue. This is like the ultimate stereotype for Trans super heroes?
Drace24
Drace24 - 5/13/2022, 10:54 AM
@ElricReturns - Yeah, maybe you are right. It doesn't super work as an allegory here. You can't exactly apply the same logic. You either are a mutant or you are not. It's a biological reality, not psychological one. Would just give credence to the "Have you ever tried not to be a mutant?" line from X-Men. Kinda reminds me of how some activists use the disabled as an argument for self-ID. (Please stop doing this, people!)

But I always thought that Inhumans would make for a pretty good trans allegory. Isn't the whole point of the Inhumans that they can choose to transform? To irreversibly change their body in the hopes of feeling more like themselfs afterwards?

Anyway, personally I'm more baffled by the ridiculous superpowers. Does this mean she could go within seven feet of a janitor and then transfer his being a janitor? XD

@ElricReturns - If I had to guess, they did little to no research. They could have just asked trans people, had a contest, or anything other than this. I'm still baffled as to who co-signs on these kinds of things. There must be an impressive group of yes men and women surrounding them.

First look. Not first.

Jessie Drake was in 1994, and if not transgender there certainly is a case to be made about Cloud's fluidity from the 1980s. Shvaughn Erin of the Legion Of Superheroes, Masquarade of Blood Syndicate, Wanda of Sandman. Not common, sure, but this isn't anything new either.

Just felt that distinction should be noted.

@ElricReturns - There have been other trans characters in superhero stuff tho right? So it's not like it's the first. I don't see how its much different from when the X-Men used their stories and characters to discuss social issues. Those characters were all "mutants" and it didn't hurt anything. Mutant just means somebody born with superpowers.

I agree the name is weird though. Bad choice.

@TheFinestSmack - It also started with Safe, Safe(something). I honestly can't remember and can't even bother to look it up.
vadersdaddy

@bkmeijer1 - literally no one argues that a trans person has an identity of their own. In fact the only argument about trans peoples identities takes place within themselves.

@ElricReturns - Trans issues aren't biology based, they're psychologically based.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 5/15/2022, 4:52 PM
@vadersdaddy - well, everybody has as identity of their own right? Whether within themselves or to the outside world.

This comic character just feels like the complete opposite of that. It makes it look to me that the character's whole identity is based around taking that of others.

Now that I think about, this isn't even a trans-related argument. It's just not really a good character trait for a hero.

You know like that old Father who has a gay child and doesn't know how to relate to them, so they try to say something nice to them, but says it in an unintentionally offensive way that makes him look ignorant and foolish, but he's old and trying so you kinda just awkwardly laugh it off......

THAT, but in comic form.
