Victory Has Defeated You

The challenge of creating a successful trilogy that is both cinematically praised, respectful to the comics, and successful at the box office.

Victory Has Defeated You

This is solely my opinion....

Batman Begins

Batman Begins told an amazing origin story.  It also included villains never before seen on screen, represented Gotham to the fullest and reintroduced the fun and complexity of Batman to a new generation.  Christopher Nolan and an all-star cast did an extraordinary job of capturing the essence of Bruce Wayne and his transformation into Batman.

The Dark Knight

My favorite Batman movie and possibly CBM to date.  Batman was back and I was captivated from the opening scene until the end credits.  The on-screen portrayal of the Joker and what he stands for was mind-blowing.  The contrast between Batman and The Joker was captured perfectly.  The dialogue itself gave me goosebumps (Man goosebumps).  The Batpod, the temporary “Bat-Cave”, Batman’s “custom” fighting style, the interrogation scene, (honestly the list can go on).  Nolan did it again and I was one of his biggest supporters.

The Dark Knight Rises

Batman won.  Yup, Batman successfully defeated Crime, retired, and became a recluse in his mansion.  Not because he’s too old, he could still be Batman if he wanted to.  He became a recluse because he won, Batman defeated crime.

He will go on to have his back broken and a vertebrae “punched” back into his spine….  In the theatre my reaction went like this, “Yes!!  Bane just shoulder pressed Batman and broke his back!!” to “a prisoner in Bane’s prison just realigned Batman’s back by punching him”.  He will then repeatedly fall while trying to climb and escape the prison, thus injuring his back further but Batman seems immune to these injuries.  I remember thinking in the theatre, “holy shit, Nolan is going to use the Lazarus Pit, I mean at this point he has too” (Not like that would fit in his universe).

No, Batman recovers (!!Impossible!! I agree, Bane), escapes, travels to Gotham (How did he get there? Answer: He’s Batman), aaand he beats Bane, then Talia reveals herself as the real leader of the League of Shadows (Not Bane) and stabs Bruce.  Then with Bane back in control, with a shotgun pointed at Batman, Catwoman comes out of nowhere on the Batpod and shoots Bane.  My response “Nolan, was this film directed by Nolan, is this a dream sequence, or is this like Memento, are we going to see a scene somewhere in the beginning or at the end that explains this movie”.

Then, Batman somehow uses Autopilot in the Bat Wing in order to take a nuclear bomb away from Gotham and have it explode over the Sea.  I understand, but this was a Nuclear Bomb, in other words, Gotham is definitely feeling the radiation anyway, and Batman is wearing a suit that can be penetrated by a knife, so what the hell is happening.

There were some cool parts of the movie, but I was lost.  I thought one of the coolest parts of the Knightfall comic was that Bane knew he couldn’t face Batman one on one if Batman was 100 %.  So, he waits until Batman has to defeat other villains and is exhausted, meets Batman at his Mansion, and kicks his ass.

In the final installment of Nolan's Batman, I feel like success had defeated Nolan, or Nolan truly felt that we were stupid enough to eat this shit up.

What went wrong?  Again, just my opinion, if anybody can help me to like this movie, please do.

Love the Secret Window gif! Great movie.

Gotta disagree with you though. I thought Rises was the best of the bunch. In my eyes, without Ledger, Dark Knight wouldn't have been half the movie it was. And if you can destroy a movie by changing one thing, that says a lot.

Thanks, haha, the secret window gif felt like it was fitting.

It took a long time for an actor like Bale to portray Batman as well, and the Dark Knight also may not have been the same without the rest of the all-star cast, Oldman, Freeman, Eckhart, Caine....

I also thought the Dark Knight was written masterfully.

True though, (RIP Ledger) I think it'll be interesting to compare Ledger's Joker to future takes on the character.

If I remember correctly, Fox told Bruce that his suit in Dark Knight Rises would be MORE vulnerable to knives...

Ok. Been awhile since I saw them. Thanks @MrSotoMan

Right, haha, thanks, he says "The suit is more vulnerable to gun fire and knives" in the Dark Knight. Good Point.

I still feel that the situation could have been handled better, especially because he seemed to have passed the reigns over to "Robin" at the end of the film.

For me, I just really wanted to see Bane sitting in Wayne's mansion, waiting patiently for an exhausted Batman to come home. Then, I was looking forward to seeing them throw down in Wayne Mansion.

I'll try to re-watch the movie and take it for what it is....

@MrSotoMan

The movie definitely was not "terrible or poor", it was filmed beautifully and like I said there were cool parts to the movie. If I didn't know about the Knightfall storyline I most likely wouldn't have too many complaints.

It was obviously a decent movie, I own it. I will re-watch it, it has also been by far the best depiction of Batman on screen. I've heard that the script also went through many stages and it would have been interesting to see what the movie would have been like if The Joker was included.

Also, the site is called ComicBookMovie.com, what else are we supposed to criticize or PRAISE other than Writing, Cast, Direction....

One of my main problems with the film is that Batman won, he defeated crime?

@MrSotoMan

True, although since Batman is "more than just a man...." it would have been cool to see someone take the reigns after Batman had been paralyzed. Although, I understand how this would have been hard to write especially if Batman had been isolated for 8 years with no relationship to Robin or anybody else other than Alfred

@TheMexicanSuperman

I'm not here to argue.

I'm here to state my opinion and hear other's opinions in order to possibly hear new opinions, because I really like to hear other people's opinions because I really believe that opinions are important. Seriously, what are opinion's if we can't compare opinion's and come up with better opinion's about the stuff that matters. I really want to hear your opinion, so when you get a chance, what is your opinion?

Love TDKR. Don't judge me.

@CookieKid247

I can understand, it wasn't a bad film at all, I just had certain expectations, I wanted to see certain things on screen that didn't happen. I've learned not to go to a CBM and have those expectations.

If I never read Knightfall, I probably wouldn't have had many problems with TDKR

@DrKinsolving
The only actual expectation I had for TDKR was for Bane to break Batman's back. When Bane broke Batman's back the movie was made to me it could do no wrong considering that's one o f my favorite comic book moments. They've could've brought back Adam West as Batman for the next half of the movie for all I cared. With the nuclear bomb and such the ending could've been this

and I still would've been happy

Hahaha, Awesome gif and well said, that first Batman vs Bane fight was great. I jumped up when Bane broke the Bat.

I still think Nolan had the ultimate Batman movie lined up for us, until Heath Ledger croaked. He was setting things up for a truly epic cinematic event, but it just wasn't meant to be.

I seem to recall something about Jack Nicholson warning Heath Ledger that playing the Joker messes with your head...it seems like the ultimate Batman movie will forever be in our imaginations, we can ever come close but not all the way.

I agree, (RIP Ledger). Nolan definitely had something else planned. Especially because Scarecrow was in Rises and so was Ra's, and Dent, and his impact.

It didn't make sense that Joker wasn't included other than out of respect for Ledger.

@DrKinsolving - Yeah, I didn't think it made sense either. What's more odd about it is the fact that everybody knows Joseph Gordon-Levitt favors Heath Ledger heavily, almost to the point of irony. They could have gone for broke and tried to replace Ledger, and even though they didn't out of respect for Ledger and his legacy...they could have at least mentioned the Joker, for the sake of continuity.

I mean, really, not even a "Hey, remember that Joker guy?"

DrKinsolving
DrKinsolving - 7/8/2014, 3:18 PM
@Christuffer

Exactly, RIP Ledger, I think the Joker should have been mentioned, and I think it could have been done respectively.

I did re-watch it and there are some cool parts but there are just so many things that I turn me off about the movie. Batman defeated crime or organized crime, Batman retired for 8 years? (Batman wouldn't retire), and then there are so many other plot holes.

Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are both amazing but I just can't get into TDKR's. I would love to read the original scripts though, I'm sure there were some amazing interactions between Batman and Joker.
