My thoughts on the new Daredevil movie

The past couple days have been hit with news that Fox is moving forward with a new Daredevil movie, but picking up where the 2003 flick left off instead of rebooting it. Here's what I think about the current plans for the film...

I'd like to preface this by saying I've never seen either Daredevil or Elektra (mostly because of the consistent negativity I've heard about the two), so I can't offer as clear of a view as I would had I seen at least Daredevil.

Anyways...

I honestly think that, as nearly everyone else on here does, Marvel should've regained the rights to the character and reboot the franchise. It would've tied in rather easily with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (especially since Daredevil Born Again, which is rumored to be influencing the new movie, has a cameo from Captain America and, should Marvel make a movie based on the novel, Chris Evans might reprise). It just seems wrong to make it look like Marvel's getting it back, only for Fox to suddenly announce "WE'RE MAKING A DAREDEVIL 2 AND WE STILL HAVE THE RIGHTS BECAUSE THE PROJECT WAS IN DEVELOPMENT FOR YEARS!!!".

Another concern I have is the just-now announcement that none of the original cast members are coming back. If this is supposed to be a sequel instead of a reboot, why not bring the cast back? Before people start calling me a fag for saying such, let me express what I mean. I think that every sequel should have the original cast back (with the possible exception of one or two minor characters), because most people are more than likely to think of the sequel as a reboot. Shuffling of the cast was one of the things that abruptly weakened the original Batman franchise, and I can see it making the Daredevil series unstable (even if the cast was critically panned for their roles).

As stated above, the new movie will supposedly be an adaptation of the critically acclaimed "Daredevil: Born Again" by Frank Miller. The story follows Kingpin discovering Daredevil's identity and making his life a living hell. Now I must admit (based upon the little plot I know of the original Daredevil) that this would be slightly inconsistent, since Kingpin already knows Daredevil's identity in the first movie. Maybe they can change the story a bit? That nitpick aside, the plot for Born Again sounds like a great possible plot for the movie, and (should Fox use the novel for the plot basis) could possibly make the movie itself an improvement.

Finally, I'd like to briefly touch on the director of the new movie, David Slade. I'm hesitant about this choice solely on the fact that he directed Twilight Eclipse. But from what I know about 30 Days Of Night, he seems like someone who can breathe life into the character and make him an especially dark figure on film.

Well, those are my current thoughts on the upcoming Daredevil sequel/reboot/whatever you call it. Whether or not the movie will be good will be determined when it comes out, but for now I'd say hold your breath and see which direction it'll go.

If Marvel were to get the rights back to all the characters we'd get a load of reboots and the characters that haven't made it on to the big screen like Doctor Strange wouldn't have much of a chance. Plus they would have WB syndrome. Too many characters all under one roof that they don't know what to do with them. I'm cool with their DD decision and personally think it would be EVEN longer for us to get another DD if Marvel got the rights back.

It's not like Daredevil needs to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He's not exactly the most involved and important member of the Marvel Umiverse, and if Fox makes a great movie who will care. I must admit I'm a little skeptical about this being a sequel while getting rid of the cast. I think it would be fine to have a sequel or a reboot for the original Daredevil film, and I even thought a sequel was the better decision. Changing the cast completely ruins a lot of the connection it had to the original movie. Oh and in the last movie, Kingpin learns Daredevil in the last fight scene of the movie when the resolution basically happens so they can just reference that scene and then they can translate the rest of the story.

You should watch the movie it wasn't really that bad and the Director's Cut is much better than the theatrical release it's amazing what a few extra scenes can do. The movie may have a bit of cheesiness (exspecially a certain playground scene), and it might seem a bit crammed and not enough character development, and it might be a bit lighthearted. In the Director's Cut things are changed it now explores a darker, interesting sub-plot and the movie has more depth and time those two things take away two of the issues for the theatrical release. Also both variations of the film were faithful to the comics. I recomend the Director's Cut to you and I think you'll like it.

I personally think that the rights should gone back to Marvel, because Fox already had their chance to make a Daredevil movie. Also, Marvel would have a better success with Daredevil than Fox.

Ive never seen Avatar, but I think there should be less blue people in the sequel... Sorry - I thought we were playing the unsubstantiated claim-game...

Look, the first film is mediocre. Keep in mind it's 8 years old and up to that point only X-Men and Spider-Man were made (not counting the DC films). DD is a very unique character. Even the first Spider-Man film is super cheesy 9 years later. Still, if Marvel had the rights then it'd be way down on the list given all the other stuff there is to make and we'd have to wait more than 5 years probably.

To say that "Fox had their chance" so screw 'em isn't fair. I think Fox saw back in 2000 that X-Men worked and then rushed to get Daredevil and Fantastic 4 on screen. They had a crap producer in Avi Arad who got a writer-director like Mark Steven Johnson and Tim Story to make these films. I think they thought they "should" be cheesy. Fox did not understand the mythology so they just greenlit the films without regard to the directors experience and knowledge. All the guy had to say is he read the Sunday funnies and they figured he know what he was doing. That's not happening so much now. Marvel is still a consultant on these movies.

First Class is not perfect (this is due to the inaccuracies of the prior X films), but it appears to be in line with X2 in terms of quality. I understand why they did not reboot becuase the X films all made money.

We now have a director who's more in touch with DD in tone and Fox seems to want to do better with F4 too. Except for the X-Men series they've decided to get new producers for these films so it's all a fresh take. Lets see how First Class turns out and see what casting choices they make on DD. I know there's some trouble now with Wolverine but I'm sure they'll get it worked out. I hope they can get Silver Surfer going too!

They're willing to get these made now so I'm not too upset. There's no guarantee that Marvel will make a good film because they are choosing from the same talent pool.

DD doesn't really need to be in the Marvel universe either. Sure, a Spider-Man team up would be cool but he works best as a lone character. He has mixed it up with F4 before and I would think since Fox has those rights maybe they could do something cool there. Same goes for using Dr. Doom in DD or Kingpin against the F4. If they use all the cool characters like Mr. Fear, the Owl, etc I think it can be satisfying.

Hey, y'know. The Incredible Hulk was continuation/reboot of Hulk, with an entirely different cast, and look how well that worked.

(I only think it's a contiuation because didn't Hulk end with Bruce in Brazil?)
