DC Studios Boss James Gunn Promises Better Synergy Between Future DC Movies And Comic Books

We're entering the dawn of a new era with the DCU, and DC Studios boss James Gunn has now promised fans they can expect a greater level of synergy between what's happening on the screen and page in future.

DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran remain hard at work putting together a slate of movies, TV shows, and video games. All of those will take place in the new DCU, but The Suicide Squad director is clearly turning his attention to the company as a whole.

After recently confirming he'll look into making sure director's commentaries are included on physical editions of DC movies as well as Digital ones, we have another interesting update from the filmmaker today. This one relates to DC Comics, an entity that, for the most part, remains largely independent from whatever is happening on screen.

Asked by a fan on Mastadon whether he plans to ensure a greater level of coordination with DC publishing (meaning we'd get new series and reprints featuring characters DC Studios brings to the screen), Gunn confirmed that's something he's already turned his attention to.

"I am working on this with my friend Jim Lee," the DC Studios boss revealed.

What this will mean is if we get new Lobo or Deathstroke movies, for example, fans will be able to easily find reprints of classic stories featuring the characters in stores. It also increases the chances of new ongoing titles featuring the heroes and villains we see on screen, similar to what Marvel Comics often does.

We have a feeling Gunn has learned a lot of lessons from his time at Marvel Studios - remember, a new Guardians of the Galaxy comic book series launched alongside his 2014 movie - and him bringing those ideas to DC Studios is no bad thing.

Common sense says it will be a while before we start seeing these changes come into effect, but there's already speculation online that Blue Beetle is the first chapter in the new DCU. If so, expect the spotlight to be put back on that character in your favourite comics next summer.

Stay tuned for more DC Studios updates!

Good. Gunn's starting to make me hope again.

@DCfan84 - Were you a big fan of Snyder's DCU?

Only asking because for a lot of people, I would think just the fact alone that someone was appointed as a Kevin Feige type person to organize all this stuff is a move in the right direction and would give some shred of hope.

It's just sad that Gunn is getting ripped apart by Snyder fans. Give the guy a chance, you know?

@CorndogBurglar - No. I have never been a fan of Snyders vision. Ever since he gave us this scene

I'm sorry, that is NOT Superman at all! Like you, I look forward to seeing what Gunn's going to do. We need a Superman scene comparable to Captain America's scene in Endgame. Where he's by himself, beaten, broken, but still standing up to Thano's entire army! That is Superman! Hopefully Gunn delivers

While is sad that the OG cast is gone (who’ve some of them were great for their character), it’s great that DC is starting from zero again. Hopefully their first project leads them to something exciting.

It will take years, but that’s something past executives refused to accept. They wanted to have the MCU’s success and instantly and that’s why everything was a disaster.

With that said, it would be fun if Gunn’s plan failed. Imagine if all this is a disaster too?

@colonel179 - "They wanted to have the MCU’s success and instantly and that’s why everything was a disaster."

This is exactly right! They rushed into everything so they could get to a Justice League film asap.

Just think about it like this. BvS was the 2nd film in this universe. We only had one film with Superman at the time and BvS was the introduction of Batman. This is the equivalent of having Iron Man and Captain America fight each other in the 2nd film of the MCU after Iron Man 1.

How on earth can you expect people to care about that when these 2 characters had zero interaction before? Look at how emotional and meaningful it was when Cap and Stark came to blows in Civil War. BvS had none of that. Because we hadn't been watching them be friends with each other for 3 phases of movies leading up to it.

And then you rush a JL movie while only introducing half the team through 10 second video files in BvS?

Just terrible.

@WarMonkey - most I still prefer dc over marvel , marvel can’t do series without involving time travel and cloning rebirth of character they don’t stay dead.,

Dc Alfred is stays dead same other villains not return

They don't have to have synergy.

All I want him to do is deliver movies. This whole interconnectivity with comics and video games doesn't interest me, and I see it as wasted energy. But who knows, I guess sometimes the things you never knew you wanted surprise you.

I've finally reached a point in my life where people actually WANT shitty ass synergy between comics and movies and it's not forced from the Big 2.

@Doomsday8888 - Yeah, this was always just a way to bring who see the movies and hadn't read comics into the comics-reading consumer base.

It's not something that I imagine anyone who already reads comics gives a damn about. If anything, it cheapens the comic industry and pulls you out of stories. Like they're a Happy Meal toy to go along with a movie.

Tbh synergy isn’t something that moves the needle for me. I’m hoping they mean that they’re really going to try and direct the movie fans to comics as well. Like what The Batman did earlier this year.

This is the stupidest thing Gunn has said so far. And that's saying something.

he should just spend his time fixing things, not yapping about them.

Synergy between movies and comics??? Why?

The movies should be it's own things and stick with its own continuity; and the comics should have the freedom to tell new stories unencumbered by the movie universe.

They're making this too complicated.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 12/23/2022, 11:48 AM
Honestly, I don't mind it. They can use the comics to test some stuff before trying it out on screen. Think that'll work
teefurtree
teefurtree - 12/26/2022, 9:36 AM
@bkmeijer1 - How? Different audiences, much different scales. Comic arcs can take years to play out, that's not a great grounds for testing storylines for movies you're developing at the same time in my opinion.

Much easier and more reliably informative to look back at 90 years of history of successes and failures, which stories stand the test of time in acclaim, and pull the best elements from those.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 12/26/2022, 10:28 AM
@teefurtree - oh yeah, I definitely agree with your second point. There's enough to pull from

This is something I disagree with him about, I hate how Marvel comics has to have stories going on that has to do with something that the movies are dealing with and now DC is following this dumb trend, which is unfortunate.

Don't change the SOURCE MATERIAL and the COMICS for the MOVIES, change the MOVIES so that they follow the COMICS and SOURCE MATERIAL!

I think reprints is a great idea, but trying to force the comics to do accomodate to the films and TV shows can backfire. Better just stick to the films and have Jim Lee handle the comics, but asking him to do some posters wouldn't be a bad idea.
