EDITORIAL: Why Not Just Combine NIGHTWING and BATGIRL Into One Movie?

EDITORIAL: Why Not Just Combine NIGHTWING and BATGIRL Into One Movie?

Nightwing and Batgirl are both getting their own respective films in the DC Extended Universe. However, did it ever come to thought that mixing these two leads characters into one film could work?

If you've been following reports and rumors from DC's movie studio, you'd know that they've thrown up plenty of ideas in the works. Not many of them are set in stone, so it's basically a "see whats sticks on the wall" type situation. Two of their many of projects that comes to mind is Nightwing and Batgirl.

While the Nightwing film doesn't have a confirmed release date right now, The Lego Batman Movie director Chris McKay will reportedly helm it. As for Batgirl, her movie isn't tagged with a release date either. In fact, that film doesn't even have a director anymore, since Joss Whedon stepped down not too long ago.

So as you can see, both of these movies are in the early development stage. Which means anything and everything could change in a short amount of time. So here's my proposed idea on the matter... Why not just make a Nightwing movie that also stars Batgirl? Instead of making two separate films of these characters, just put them in one richly filled story. Both Nightwing and Batgirl have had plenty of history in the comics side by side, so it's not like this is something brand new.

So considering all that, let's move on to the reasons why this could work.

First things first, you'd be killing two birds with one stone. It seems a bit unnecessary to give either of these characters their own film. That's not saying they couldn't carry their own movie, but Nightwing isn't the household name Batman or Wonder Woman is. Same goes for Batgirl. However, when you put these two former sidekicks together, that ensures more than enough story to work off of.

Also, it would be nice to see a duo/tag-team superhero movie. It wouldn't be like Batman v Superman where they hate each other the first hour and a half, and rush to team up for the third act. No, it would be the complete opposite actually. Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon could begin the movie as great friends, or even boyfriend and girlfriend. So when it comes time to suit up, they already have a pre-made chemistry and reason to work with each other.

Another reason why this could work is it could have a little bit of everything. Action, comedy, romance, and some mystery as well. In other words, this movie could have a somewhat light hearted tone in a dark setting. Think of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Only instead of Cap and Black Widow, you have Nightwing and Batgirl fighting crime. It's a formula that has a proven track record, something that DC should take a look at.

Last but not least, DC should be willing to try anything at this point. Be creative, but keep the quality afloat. It's not entirely out of the question one day Warner Bros completely scraps the Batgirl film, and makes Chris McKay add Batgirl into his Nightwing film. Not saying it will happen, but it's just a thought.

On that note, what are thoughts on this? Would you rather Nightwing and Batgirl stay separate, or could a film collaboration be the way to go?

I would be ok with this

Good idea man. It would introduce the world to two great characters and serve a common goal. Have them both hunt down the Gotham City Sirens. Common villains they are both familiar with.

@RancidBane - And with that you smash the third bird

@RancidBane - Thanks. I was thinking someone like Black Mask and Two Face could team up and combine their mobs to takeover Bludhaven or something. Two heroes would benefit from two villains.

@KWilly - no doubt that could work. WB/DC just seems dead set on getting more Harley. This makes them happy and works well with the two characters as well. It shows the seduction of Ivy and the cunning of Selina while having the crazy of Quinn.

This is actually a good idea.

I would love to see them in their sidekick days too

That would be really smart and totally plausible

It could be fun and interesting (but could be cliche) if they didn't know eachothers secret identities and had to hide them until they realize whats happening.

Why do they skip over Robin and go to Nightwing? Let's see the Dick Grayson character develop from Boy Wonder into an early 20-something and become Nightwing over the course of a few movies. Robin is an iconic character.

@GeneralZod - Because DC fricked it up by making their new cinematic Batman nearly 50 years old.

@Nightwing1015 - I still think we're getting a rebooted Batman. The whole Nolan-Snyder vision of Batman needs to be set aside. Fingers crossed.

This is an amazingly smart idea...which is why it will never happen.

It would (and would still be) a equally amazingly smart idea to build the DCEU around the Dark Knight Trilogy...you know that very popular set of films that ALREADY has a very popular Batman, Catwoman and Nightwing. Yet no one seems to be creative enough to do the most obvious and in your face move that is just money waiting to be collected. Instead they are just flailing around trying to catch their tail. There are REALLY good ideas jus like yours

Yet it does not happen....

@Forthas - It did not have a popular catwoman and nightwing and a somewhat popular batman. With the way Rises ended, it would have been very dumb to just pikc up from there.

@dark1150 - I am sorry but it DID have both popular portrayals of the characters. Anne Hathaway's portrayal was voted the second most popular Catwoman who has been in the role.

https://www.buzzfeed.com/michaelblackmon/lifes-a-bitch-now-so-am-i?utm_term=.kuAogdM7W#.sqAVPn7ko

It so impressed the director Christopher Nolan, that he advocated for a spinoff film.

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2012/jul/12/anne-hathaway-dark-knight-rises

Joseph Gordon Levitt was voted by fans as the favorite to take up the nightwing mantle in a February 2017 Comicbook(dot)com online poll.

There was nothing about the end of Rises that would preclude from adding on to the DC film universe. In fact it would allow Nightwing to establish himself as a crime fighter prior to a return of the Dark Knight making for a perfect scenario.

@Forthas - Using a buzzfeed article as evidence is a bad, bad argument and many people and critics that I know did not like catwoman or JGL as whatever the hell character he was at the end of rises, it certainly was not robin nor was it nightwing and any comicbook fan would tell you that. Using christopher nolan is an appeal to authority and not a good argument.

"Joseph Gordon Levitt was voted by fans as the favorite to take up the nightwing mantle in a February 2017 Comicbook(dot)com online poll."
Another bad argument, because a) the polls and numbers are not inducative of not what everyone thinks/can't really engage them and comicbook(dot)com is not really a great source. Plus, that maybe just the actor, not the actyal character from the movie.

"There was nothing about the end of Rises that would preclude from adding on to the DC film universe. In fact it would allow Nightwing to establish himself as a crime fighter prior to a return of the Dark Knight making for a perfect scenario."
Except for the fact he was literary not dick grayson, he was a completely different character.

@dark1150 - Using a Buzzfeed article is a much better argument than..." many people and critics that I know" Please provide whatever evidence that you have other than people YOU know.

The reason that Joseph Gordon Levitt was voted higher is because he was well positioned ALREADY to take on the role. There is no other empirical evidence other than his turn in the Dark Knight Rises that would explain why he is more popular than other actors.

"Except for the fact he was literary not dick grayson, he was a completely different character."
This is a ridiculous argument. The end of the film makes it clear that he has an assumed identity because his "real" name is Robin. There is no reason why creatively it is not discovered that his birth name is Dick Grayson which would be an interesting element to a full blown Nightwing film.

@Forthas -

"That is an assumption you cannot make. It is actually a very bad assumption to make and renders your entire point meaninglesss.

"This is a ridiculous argument. The end of the film makes it clear that he has an assumed identity because his "real" name is Robin. There is no reason why creatively it is not discovered that his birth name is Dick Grayson which would be an interesting element to a full blown Nightwing film."
Then congrats, you a) did not make nightwing or dick greyson and b) completely butcher his backstory which DC is already doin with its universe. This would be such a bad idea and in no way interesting. Hell this very site would be put on blast for not liking it.

Reboot Batman first and introduce a modern take on Grayson/Robin. Then you can start thinking about Nightwing for a future film.

I love this idea. I’d create a new banner for the Bat-Universe movies. My suggestion: Gotham Knights.
Gotham Knights could then have multiple members of the Bat Family do their thing without introducing 10 different solo films. Make it more Brave and the Bold with a couple of featured heroes so the audience gets more bang for their buck. Then you could utilize the Birds of Prey, The Sirens, Batgirl, Red Hood, Nightwing, Deadshot, Harley, Joker, whoever! Get Jeremy Irons to read the prologue and epilogues to set up each film like they are from the Bat-files. I think 5 or 6 of these is much better than all the solo projects that may confuse the general audience.

D.C. just needs to give Batman/Superman a bit of a break in the theatres imho. That unfortunately includes the batfamily; just too much batness in short time and supes could use the break too. More Wonder Woman, Flashpoint, and Darkest Night story plots would be way more interesting to me.
