Warner Bros. Discovery's David Zaslav Says "There's Not Going To Be Four Batmans" In The DCU Moving Forward

While updating on James Gunn and Peter Safran's progress as new co-heads of DC Studios., Warner Bros. Discovery's David Zaslav has made some very interesting comments about the future of The Batmen...

Warner Bros. Discovery's "10-year plan" for the DCU involves unifying the franchise under one banner, and based on comments from CEO David Zaslav, that may not bode well for multiple versions of the same character currently occupying the same space.

While updating on the progress made by recently-appointed DC Studios co-heads, James Gunn and Peter Safran, Zaslav revealed that the pair are “coming close to the end” of finishing a bible (a document roadmap that outlines key characters and plot points) for the DCU.

“I think over the next few years, you’re going to see a lot of growth and opportunity around DC, there’s not going to be four Batmans. And so part of our strategy is drive the hell out of DC, which James and Peter are going to do. I think they’ve thrilled the fans. I think they’re going to thrill you over a period of time.”

Right now, Robert Pattinson is playing The Dark Knight in Matt Reeves' "BatVerse," which is separate from the main DCU. Ben Affleck will return as his take on the Caped Crusader for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Flash, while Michael Keaton will also appear as Batman in the latter.

Zaslav's comments could be interpreted a couple of different ways, but he certainly seems to be indicating that only one of those actors will be staying on in the role moving forward. We know a sequel to Reeves' highly successful first outing is in the works, so is there a chance Gunn and Safran are planning to fold The Batman movies into the DCU?

The Flash is expected to serve as something of a "reset" for the DCU, and since the movie will involve parallel realities and "Variants" of the same character, there are several options available to Zaslav and his team.

@ImBatman4realz - lol

This right here is why Zaslov has to state the obvious

@ImBatman4realz -

I don't think that's viable outside of the upcoming cameo. The Batman they're likely to focus on and makes the most sense is Pattison's Batman. He's the newest, less tainted by a lot of drama, and the director is already moving on to a second film.

They'd have to scrap all of Matt Reeves' plans and ignore the first film just to get Ben Affleck to agree to a NEW series of films.

I don't see that happening.

@DCasAhobby - your comment is anything but “obvious”. What are you saying?

@Humperdink - and yet they haven’t greenlit a Matt Reeves sequel yet either.

The Battinson movie was good for what it was, but I still want Batfleck back. One could argue that each of the current actors were “tainted” to some degree by the Josstice League drama. They’re not going to recast everyone.

I don’t see how Pattinson can be implemented into the DCEU.

Matt Reeves should have stuck to his original plan of The Batman being a prequel of young DCEU Batman.

Setting it completely separate from everything else doesn’t make a lot of sense, given it confines his films to Gotham and its characters. What scenario would make Robert Pattinson’s Batman an effective Batman alongside the Justice League?

Visually it would look very odd

@ImBatman4realz - having it separate means not being burdened by any of the baggage of Batfleck and the DCEU
