Deadpool may be the "Merc with a Mouth," but that doesn't necessarily means his next film needs to be R-rated.
Speaking to Yahoo Movies UK,
Deadpool 2 director David Leitch thinks a third film can find a "happy ground" between the franchise's usual R and Disney's typical family-friendly PG-13 movie ratings.
“It's rated R so that's not necessarily the [MCU] brand but he doesn't necessarily need to be R and [Disney] don't necessarily need to only make PG-13 movies,” Leitch told Yahoo Movies UK.
“I think we'll find a happy ground.”
Given that Fox already
delivered a PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2, retitled "Once Upon A Deadpool," we already have a sense of what that happy ground could look like. Re-imagining the wise-cracking merc for a more family-friendly audience might require a bit more creativity from all involved, but it doesn't seem like an impossible hurdle. And while Disney has not yet announced anything official for
Deadpool, that doesn't mean there isn't chatter going on behind-the-scenes.
“There's a lot of mystery still surrounding what they want to do with Deadpool in [Disney’s] Marvel world but I think, from discussions that I've heard, it's all positive,” Leitch teased.
“I think that they're just trying to figure a way in as Deadpool's hard.”
Leitch's comments also seem to suggest that he might be involved in some of these discussions - or at least would like to be - when it comes to finding this happy medium. This isn't necessarily a surprise, though, as the director has already
gone on record saying his answer would be "hell yes" if asked to make Deadpool 3.
Disney CEO Bob Iger has also previously stated that the company will keep making R-rated Marvel films, but so far nothing has been announced.
Should
Deadpool ultimately not fit in with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Leitch has
already thrown his hat into the ring to direct a different MCU film: Blade.
