That DEATHSTROKE Film From Gareth Evans And Joe Manganiello Might Not Be Happening Anytime Soon

On paper, having a live-action film centered around one of the DC Universe's most efficient and lethal fighters directed by the brain behind The Raid films seems like a can't-miss opportunity...

Joe Manganiello recently made headlines with the incredulous reveal that he secured the role of Deathstroke in the Justice League film thanks to some fan art. He's taken to Twitter to clarify since then that the process was much more complicated than that, but the damage has pretty much already been done.  With several misfires and an uncertain future, this revelation is just one of many gaffes originating from the DC Film Universe.

But will the Deathstroke film even happen? Not long ago, it was revealed that Gareth Evans (The Raid and The Raid 2) was set to direct the film but his recent social media posts with fans seem to imply that his schedule is locked tight until 2020, working on other projects.

However, it's not all doom and gloom for the Deathstroke movie. Manganiello recently appeared on Chris Hardwick's new podcast, ID10T (formerly The Nerdist Podcast) to reveal that he has at least had a facetime chat with Evans.

"There were talks with Gareth Evans and talks of an origin movie.  I'm not giving news, this was [already out there].  But I spent 6 months prior to all of those phone calls, writing a backstory, which was turned into 16-pages, which was turned into a treatment, which led to my skype call with Gareth."

Based on the above statement, it sounds as if it's Manganiello whose steering the ship on the project and if the studio decides to move forward and Evans is unavailable, don't be surprised if another director is hired.

No shit, all of these movies are like us hearing about a black panther movie back when thor was in development.

Everyone is like, oh wb, how are you managing these movies, but I just realized these are just potential projects with very little traction, and are just way out there, like I shouldn't expect anything from these side projects unless we get a shooting schedule for the movie

Just give us a slate wb!!

Dont care for Manganiello as Slade, but Evans would have been GREAT.

Having Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke does not bother me (I can see it) and he has a pretty competent director to work with. What I don't like is that HE (Joe Manganiello) is steering the whole thing. So far we have Margot Robbie steering Harley Quinn films and Jared Leto steering Joker films. This means that these films will likely be disjointed and inconsistent, the very thing that they should not be. They need someone to steer this ship...not a bunch of paddles moving in different directions.

@Forthas - I personally don't mind actors steering films in a certain direction if they have a clear idea where they want it to go. I mean we don't need a Harley Quinn or a Joker film because they should be the bad guys in a Batman film.

Right now I'd rather they scrapped the universe idea and start over by making films that exist in their own little bubble. So Gotham and Bludhaven have the the Batman family, Metropolis has Superman and so on, with a Justice League series tying them together.

Marvel has their universe, but DC should be doing something different. Instead of trying to tie everything together, they should be saying ''these characters exist in the same world, but they're only connected when the world need them to be.'' and stop trying to set up the next film.

That's the problem they have right now. They're trying to rush out a shared universe without really thinking it through. Each film should be treat as a standalone that can exist without any other film. That's how they should be looking at their universe instead of trying to copy Marvel.

@TerryTerrapin - Aside from some post-credit scenes, Marvel's first few films could have been stand-alone films.

The difference there was the tried to make fun movies for all ages with the intention of hopefully putting together a shared universe.

Plus, Marvel has and has had folks in charge at the studio who have a passion for the characters (the movie side, at least). And they only make cbm's so all of their eggs are really in one basket.

DC has to deal with WB. And WB makes a lot of other movies. So it's tough when a studio's whole focus is not on making cbm's, or doesn't put the right people in the right places.

Well shit, what did anyone expect? They announced the movie and put it in development simply because it sounded like a good fit (and Manganiello was cast via fan art ffs) and not because it makes sense for the DCEU moving forward.

I wouldn't be surprised if the movie altogether doesn't happen.

Let's be honest, the DCEU is gonna die when WW2 comes out. These mother[frick]ers ain't got no plan and never will.

DC is gonna wait another 10 years when Joe Manganiello really does have all that white hair so that they save some money.

@CAPTAINPINKEYE - After spending so much money using computers to remove Cavill's mustache, it would not surprise me one bit that they would do that to save some money on beard dye.

I personally think it's better they delay the movie until Deathstroke is introduced in a Batman movie, one in which he's the main villain and goes toe to toe with Batman. That way there's more hype around the character and even the general audience will be more interested in finding out more about DS.

Can I just say that these latest two articles perfectly encapsulate how one-sided the current CBM landscape is (for the Marvel vs DC thing)?

MCU is about to give the world its first 2 billion dollar CBM, but meanwhile DC has yet another film in uncertain development and production.
