How does Alice hold up against Burton's other classic films?..............................................................................

Tim Burton has a history of providing some of the most entertaining and unique films to hit the big screen. He has created a style all his own which is easily recognizable. With such films as "A Nightmare Before Christmas" and "Big Fish," even the 1989 version of "Batman," he cemented his status as an A-List director. However, not everything he touches is automatic gold, take a look at "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." So where does Alice fit in? As much as I wanted this to be one of his better films, it falls short just a tad. It is still an interesting and fun film to watch, but the story tends to drag and the lack of a peak just holds this film back.

I need to get this off my chest first: the Tim Burton clique needs to go its separate ways. The main duo of Depp and Carter, as good as they are, has lost it magic and things are starting to run together. With the exception of Hathaway, all the major players in this film have played a role in at least two or three of Burton's film. This tends to make the originality of the group dissipate. Don't get me wrong, they are all incredible actors, but I think it's time.

On to the story. The film is actually not a retelling of the 1951 Disney cartoon of the same name, but more of a sequel, so be prepared for that. After Alice escapes the watching eye of a throng of family and friends, she falls into a rabbit hole. Sound familiar? This is one of several nods to the original film, but, aside from those, this is very different. All the characters have returned, as well as some new ones. As I mentioned earlier, the film is paced rather slow and the few actions scenes that are included, are rather anti-climatic, but it is enough to make it entertaining. There is a rather cliched battle towards the end that felt as though I were watching another film from the Chronicles of Narnia series, but it too has its moments.

The best part of the film were the supporting characters/actors; in fact, several of them actually stole the show. Stephen Fry as Cheshire Cat, Alan Rickman as Alumbum (I think that's his name) and Paul Whitehouse as the March Hare were fantastic. Without a doubt, anytime they were on screen, they stole it, quite easily. There is a lot of talk of Carter upstaging Depp, who is know for his scene stealing. Quite frankly, neither one of them gave a unique performance. When you could understand what "The Hatter" was saying, Depp, was decent and Carter, as the Red Queen was rather obnoxious and overbearing at times. It seemed as though you could replace these to roles with any other role the actors have played in a Burton film and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. The real disappointment here was Wasikowski as Alice. Her performance was dry and one dimensional and lacked any emotion or depth.

Needless to say, the film is quite stunning to watch, as Burton doesn't hold back with his set designs and CGI work. All of the bright colors and quirky designs, the standard for just about any Burton film, were top notch. CGI in a movie should always be as seamless as possible, to the point that if you notice it, they failed, even in a film that is laden with CGI work like this. They achieved that goal here.

As a whole, if you keep your expectations to a minimum and keep in mind that this isn't Burton's best film, you should enjoy it. It's a fun family film that will make you laugh and with the many nods to the original film, parents who remember the original Disney film will enjoy it as well. I'd check this one out in the theater, just to get the full effect of the CGI work.

Very good review. Loved it. It's weird though, some of that stuff was exactly what I was thinking in my head, except for Carter, I thought she was great. Oh well. "To each, his own."

Nice review Ecks.

My daughter saw this yesterday and wasn't impressed with the 3D part. She hated the blatant old school things coming at you attempts and said Burton didn't do much else with that.

great review @Ecks
but you should know that the caterpillar's name is Absolom. yeah, i had a hard time understanding Depp as well but that was because he was speaking gibberish.
he actually reminded me a bit of Jack Sparrow. although i did love the fact that he wore a kilt in the final fight. i was hoping he would speak with a Scottish bur though.
it was better than i expected seeing as how most of Burton's films do not appeal to me.
other than Beetlejuice, the first Batman, and Mars Attacks!
but i will definitley be getting this film on DVD, BluRay, or whatever new format that may be out by the time that AIW is released.

Thanks ya'll!

@Dog- Yeah, I didn't see it in 3D, just becasue it was transformed into that after it was filmed, and those never look right to me.

@Wadey- I knew it was something close to that. IMDB just has him listed as "The Blue Caterpillar" so I just took as tab at it.

@Multi- Thanks man. Yeah, I thought maybe I had just over-hyped the film in my head, but the longer it went on and the more I think about it now, it was just under-whelming. Too bad, because it could have benn one of his better films.

@Nightwing- I think you may be right, Disney had their watchful eye on this one.

I just saw it, and I think it was great. I would even dare to say that it is right up there with fantasy classics like Labyrinth and Legend. It was beautiful, the characters were wonderful, even secondary ones. As an uncle with several nieces I think that it is a movie every little girl should see. It sends a great message to them.

for me personally the best burton film is "big fish." i love the creativity of that film, plus the father-son dynamics are awesome.

@multi - who considers alice in wonderland to be disney's "largest flop by far?" seriously, i've just never heard that. it's probably my favorite animated disney flick (until they start pumping out some marvel stuff).

Based on this review, I'll definitely go see it. Though maybe not in 3d.

From the trailers I did get the feeling that Depp phoned it in on this - it seems/looks like he's mostly relying on the make up effects, and is just acting a kid friendly version of "mad".

MikeSanderson09 - It is the "MAD HATTER" dude lol. That character originates from the hat makers of old who worked with lead before it was known to be toxic, and ended up "mad".

And Depp's film before this one he played Michael Mann's interpretation of John Dillinger - I don't know how much more grounded you're asking for.

it was good i just saw it and well the only thing that got me annoyed were that there was alot of little kids
i mean they behaved well
except for a baby who was crying and the parents didnt do anything untill the movie was almost finished
but anyways
i like the movie
and Carter wasnt annoying
i think she did upstage Depp
but its all good lol
although I prefer the Cheshire Cat and the blue worm Absolom better than the mad hatter (especially the cat who is also my favorite character in the whole movie) but it was still alrite...now i have to see Clash of the Titans next month or when ever it comes out!

they have done major mistakes with the hatter, and i'm a hatter homie and i don't entirely hate depp. here are 3:

1. never cast a pretty-boy: he's an insane, drooling, creepy, disturbing lunatic! not a charming, goth, "funny", playfully mad manchild or weirdo! cast someone creepy, like crispin glover or steve buscemi (both wouldv'e been better)...

2. he's not the hero: as i said before, he's a lunatic! he's the MAD hatter! not the heroic, sane enough to hold a huge broadsword hatter! he's supposed to mumble nonesense or simply lash at someone, and in the book, he was always the more insane, creepy guy with some kind of anger outbursts (wich they missed in the film :( too bad), schizophrenia and delusions. the red queen and most of her cronies are insane too, so he fits much more in her side, doesn't he?

3. he is not the central character: as much as people say, the focus burton gives-is mostly on the hatter or the queen (especiall depp). it's kind of obnoxious because wher'e in the middle of the story nd there's him just coming out of the blue, sending us WTF?!?! it was kinda weird (wich is good), but mostly irriating...

TIMOTHY SPALL...HE ALSO PLAYED WORMTAIL IN HARRY POTTER

I thought it was great, not his best but good none the less. The March Hare stole it for me, Depp was a little out of it, I agree, but Carter was hilarious. Its pacing was a little strange and it dried out at some parts. I must also add "to learn how to futterwaken" onto my list of things to do before I die. That was pretty awesome.

However using the same troupe of actors isn't a bad thing, look at any of Christopher Guest's movies, and all have virtually the same cast and work almost every time with the exception of For Your Consideration.
ecksmanfan
ecksmanfan - 3/7/2010, 9:14 PM
@Deadpool- The difference with Christopher Guest's films is that the actors are not playing the same characters over and over. They mix it up. I do see your point though.

@Dmon, Awww I was going to say that! (I do love the BC though, who would have guessed that a dark cartoon with a creepy horned skull and zombie hordes wouldn't make it an instant family classic? lol)

There were certain parts of this movie that made me uneasy about it being a "family" movie. Like a blood filled mote of severed head. And eyes being carried around on tooth pick sized swords.

Overall I enjoys the movie, the ending left some things to be desired and I could have REALLY done with out the Michael Jackson-esque dance. Seriously.

I'll wait till it comes out on dvd.

@ecksmanfan, I couldn't agree more about these ppl needing to go their separate ways. I've been waiting for a burton film without depp since before sweeny todd. and carter needs to stop being in his movies if nothing else for appearance' sake. I know she says she has to audition like everyone else, but I doubt she was always the best choice, I call shenanigans.

What happened to Disney? Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland does not compare to the original animation. I remember when I was a child I would watch films like The Jungle Book and 101 Dalmatians and be amazed! Now, Disney has gone downhill and its films seem to be getting worse and worse as time goes by. If you ask me, many kids websites like Disney's should not be listed on the top category of sites like http://www.twitter.com/dozenkids. Is it time for us to realize that Disney is not really what it used to be and in fact it now scraping the barrel of entertainment?
