LIGHTYEAR's Zurg Actor Has Some Thoughts On Why TOY STORY Spin-Off Failed To Find An Audience

Toy Story spin-off Lightyear is one of Pixar's biggest box office flops, and Zurg actor James Brolin has now shared his thoughts on where he believes the movie starring Chris Evans ultimately went wrong.

Lightyear debuted to mostly positive reviews last year (it has a decent 74% on Rotten Tomatoes), but still ended up being far from the critical darling most Pixar movies are.

More importantly, it made only $226 million at the worldwide box office on a whopping $200 million budget. A rare commercial flop for the studio, plenty of pundits have since questioned what went wrong with the movie. The sci-fi tale followed the "real" Buzz Lightyear with Captain America star Chris Evans lending his voice to the Space Ranger in place of Tim Allen.

It was meant to be the movie that a young Andy watched before getting a Buzz action figure for his birthday, an idea that served as an undeniably clever way to expand the Toy Story franchise beyond, well, toys. However, it appears that isn't what most fans want from the franchise.

James Brolin lent his voice to Zurg in the movie (which revealed that he was, in fact, a much older Buzz), and recently talked to Screen Rant (via SFFGazette.com) about what he thinks went wrong with Lightyear

"I don't know if I'm going to be back to that franchise," the actor admitted. "It's too bad that movie didn't [do well], it was so grown up, it wasn't a Toy Story for kids, really. So, will there be more, will I be back? I don't know. Will I ever do any vocal stuff again? Who knows."

Given the way Zurg's story wrapped up, we wouldn't anticipate Brolin returning for a Lightyear sequel even if there was a chance one might happen. As things stand, the movie lost upwards of $100 million, so the odds of Disney and Pixar revisiting this well are slim unless they have something planned for Disney+.

We can probably forget about seeing any further Toy Story spin-offs in this vein, but a fifth instalment of that franchise is on the way.

That doesn't currently have a release date so keep checking Toonado.com and SFFGazette.com for the latest updates.

Lightyear is for kids too young to watch Solaris.

Lightyear should’ve been a live action movie with the same script or keep the animation style and make it more action packed like big hero six.

It’s because they don’t read the writing on the wall, they instead try to rewrite it

I still haven’t watched it. I still haven’t seen Toy Story 3 honestly. I was just never into those movies but I’ll give them all a shot one of these days with my kids. Magic kingdom made me wanna give Disney all my money and attention.

@MyCoolYoung - If you ever saw and enjoyed the first and second Toy Story films, you'll probably like Toy Story 3. It's an excellent ending for the trilogy. It probably won't land the same though if you never saw the first two.

Toy Story 4 on the other hand...I would describe as pretty but unnecessary. 😅

@DarkModeDan - 😂 I have seen one and two. I’d probably have to rewatch two to remember it, but me and my siblings just wasn’t Toy Story people growing up which is crazy because my siblings love it now. I’m going to give it another shot I haven’t watch it since I was 10

@MyCoolYoung - Magic Kingdom is my go to happy place. Literal #1 vacation destination

Toy Story 3 was very, VERY good. Its a bit dark for the genre but, as the above poster mentioned, it really sends the trilogy off with respect, heart, and huge emotion

@SauronthePower - I've heard that a lot. It piques my interest, but at the time of coming out I was 21 and my kid wasn't born until the next year.

Man, I could talk about magic Kingdom for hours. I can't wait to go back later this year. 2020 was rough for me and I was not enjoying life. I went to Magic Kingdom last year and it felt like a reset. Those fireworks genuinely made me happy

The damn guy just wanted a paycheck.

The movie sucked because it was generic, takia watitit was in it, and it wasn't a Toys Story movie.

@Lokiwasright - if he really had problems with it or cared about the reception he would have declined.

I still haven't seen it, but I'm betting the problem wasn't the "woke-isms" and was more so because no one wanted a backstory behind the toy... They just wanted the toys lol.

It failed because the second half sucked and the marketing couldn’t figure out how to pitch a Toy Story movie that is not a Toy Story movie.

It failed bc the story sucked. Boring ass Interstellar rip off with a lame as [frick] twist. Should’ve just adapted the old Star command cartoon

Wasn't a toy story for kids, yet it was meant to be the movie Andy saw that made him want to get a buzz lightyear action figure.

No the problem is they clearly wanted to make a completely different movie but no one there had faith in it unless it was tied to an existing IP.

It had several interesting ideas tbh and it may age nicely, but right out of the gate, this felt like the most mid Pixar film ever. And I say that as someone who really loved Luca and especially Turning Red and is very excited for Elemental.
