SNOW WHITE: Son Of Original Movie's Director Takes Aim At Disney's Plans For Upcoming Live-Action Remake

Marc Webb's (The Amazing Spider-Man) Snow White remake has been coming under fire a lot lately, and the son of the original 1937's movie's director isn't happy with how the movie is currently shaping up.

News of Disney's plans for a Snow White remake was originally met with a great deal of positivity from fans of the 1937 animated classic.

Unfortunately, the movie has recently found itself embroiled in controversy. From the decision to ditch the Seven Dwarfs to resurfaced comments from Zegler which saw her describe Prince Florian as a "stalker," there really isn't a lot of goodwill for the movie right now.

The Telegraph (via SFFGazette.com) recently spoke with David Hand, whose father, also called David Hand, was one of the original Snow White's directors. He oversaw the production, while Perce Pearce, William Cottrell, Larry Morey, Wilfred Jackson, and Ben Sharpsteen helmed the movie's sequences.

Hand believes a lot of younger viewers "have never seen the original" and "don't know what they're talking about." He adds, "I mean, it’s a whole different concept, and I just totally disagree with it, and I know my dad and Walt would also very much disagree with it."

Hand says it's a "disgrace" that Disney is "trying to do something new with something that was such a great success earlier. I'm afraid of what they’re going to do with the early films...their thoughts are just so radical now."

"They change the stories, they change the thought processes of the characters, they just aren’t the original stories anymore. They’re making up new woke things and I’m just not into any of that. I find it quite frankly, a bit insulting that they may have done with some of these classic films."

"There’s no respect for what Disney did and what my dad did," Hand concludes. "I think Walt and he would be turning in their graves."

Echoing the thoughts of many Disney lovers, Hand is critical of the studio's radically different spin on the story and laughed off the belief that the original Snow White wasn't a feminist.

No matter which side you fall on in this debate, it's starting to feel like the movie should just be dumped on Disney+.

That would be a shame for everyone involved but it's hard to imagine this backlash going away anytime soon and that could majorly hurt its box office prospects.

Joining Zelger in Snow White is Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, while Marc Webb is directing the movie from a screenplay by Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson.

Snow White is set to be released in theaters on March 22, 2024.

Camilla Cabello's Cinderella was an oscar fan nominated film. Maybe this will be just as good.

Honestly, the only issue here as with all disney remakes, is that they are made by disney.

If it was made by any other studio, nobody would give a shit that it isn't true to the original. The problem is that people are attached to the disney version and want to see a faithful remake of the disney version made by disney.

I honestly think this is a just a folk's tale that's been in public domain for a long time and I'm way more interested in seeing a director take a wild stab at the story than seeing a faithful adaptation.

This is not a historic movie, so go crazy, do something different with the material.

@Usernametaken -

agreed, and I'll add that if Disney had a truly visually creative process for remaking these things that they'd still be more well received, but there's nothing distinguishing these from any other fantasy movie being made these days, which is the opposite effect of the one the captivating originals had

Little Mermaid was probably the first one since Jungle Book that felt like it had the appropriate amount of craftsmanship and creativity put into it

Because it's the Disney property storyline where people expect to see the same property originally created years ago to be created respectfully. If it was created by another Hollywood company they get a pass but not Disney. If Full Moon created a horror like Snow White it's acceptable even if the dwarfs were goblins.

@OmegaDaGrodd - To be honest, I don't expect the movie to be worth a watch.

Because It's disney the directing and writing is going to be the run-of-the-mill mediocre and unimaginative bullshit we usually get these days.

Barbie is a good example in how to just take a big swing, subvert expectations and do something people haven't seen a 1000 times already.

But disney needs to fail more until they start taking actual risks again, until then it's going to stay that monstrous bland "blockbusters" factory they have become.

[frick] em.

I just don't get the thought process at all with this remake. All this story really has left from the original is the most basic plot points of a girl being hunted and living with 7 people. And in all of the conversations around it they have nothing but terrible things to say about the original.

Why didn't you just make something else?

And there it is same thing everyone has been saying.

@Origame - Well we could add a white couch and call it something else but at the end of the day it will never be Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

And yet Peter Dinklage got to play King of The Dwarfs though; it's okay for him but not for everyone else.

@Matador - Peter Dinklage is part of the problem for the representation. He's been the vocal advocate to stop using the term midget and dwarf as he calls it "disrespectful". Yet many Dwarf actors are against his commentary. Yet the studios are giving him what he wants.

@SonOfAGif - Exactly he is talented actor and a voice actor but seems he doesn't want competition.

@SonOfAGif - I wouldn't be surprised if he genuinely is trying to keep other competing little people actors from getting anywhere in hollywood.

SonOfAGif - 8/20/2023, 7:34 PM
@Origame - It wouldn't surprise me at all. Since the role of Tyrion Lannister put him on the map, the demand for Dwarf like characters was high. So it wouldn't surprise me if he felt that making the term Dwarf and Midget was offensive and dehumanizing was his way to eliminate demand for Dwarf characters so he would only land the roles.
Origame
Origame - 8/20/2023, 7:39 PM
@SonOfAGif - especially when he singled out snow white, since it calls for 7 little people to play the roles and can't just be him.

@Origame @SonOfAGif - Now your getting it.

Arnold Schwarzenegger used to use tactics on other body builders to win in competitions and play with minds to psych them out. Mr. Dinklage is using another method entirely so his doesn't have competition.

Not surprising.

Every original production is deemed as some sort of holy scripture by those who worked on it and shouldn't be altered/redone/etc. by anyone for any reason.

Boring.

When someone uses "woke" as a pejorative or cause for concern there is a 99% chance they are a jackass on one level or another, and none of this gentleman's comments here are refuting that equation

@OmegaDaGrodd - The fact that you all get worked up over the word is hilarious in itself.

It's just a word, and not even a derogatory one. Most people on here are jackasses, and I HIGHLY doubt you're the exception.
