DOCTOR STRANGE Was Delayed Five Months So Benedict Cumberbatch Could Star According To Scott Derrickson

It's hard to remember now, but production on 2016's Doctor Strange movie was delayed by five months to ensure that Benedict Cumberbatch could star in the Marvel Studios production. The actor's busy schedule was the cause, and even with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, a stand-in was often used while he was forced to be elsewhere.

Ironically, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was also recently hit by a delay, but this time, it was a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which is causing chaos across the globe.

While he's no longer set to be in the director's chair after "creative differences" led to him being replaced by Sam Raimi, Doctor Strange helmer Scott Derrickson recently took to Twitter to reveal how being forced to postpone production on the first film ultimately proved to be beneficial.

As you can see below, it allowed them to refine the movie's script and visuals, something which obviously helped Doctor Strange stand out from the crowd when it arrived in theaters back in 2016.

Are you guys excited for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness?

Anyone who has followed Doctor Strange's path through the MCU KNEW this story five years ago. But I suppose its become newsworthy AGAIN since Derrickson mentioned it. On a very slow news cycle due to coronavirus I suppose its better than nothing.

Just glad Marvel Studios picked the perfect actor to inhabit this character instead of going with the other choices they had at the time. While no film studio has a perfect record on casting, but Marvel Studios is pretty damn close. I wish other franchises from other studios took the same amount of care Marvel Studios does with choosing its actors.

@String - It's a good reassuring message at the very least. Not that no one already had this frame of mind, but hearing it from the original director is a pretty great reinforcement to optimism. (I am jonesing for some solid news tho. Maybe even just a message from Feige.)

Doctor Strange was supposed to come out June 2016? This is the first time I hear about this.

of course this also allowed extra time for the joke-writers to come in and make everyone from Strange, to the Ancient One to Mads Mikkelson's vengeful maniac sound just like Tony Stark.

The most important question is will there be a Bruce Campbell cameo if Sam Raimi is directing?
