EDITORIAL: Dr. Strange First Look - Is the 'Eye of Agamotto' the 'SOUL TIME STONE'?

Well our first look at Benedict Cumberbatch as 'Doctor Strange' has a lot of us (me) asking questions about his costume and a certain gem. Hit the jump! UPDATED!

EDIT: It's come to my attention that Kevin Fiege has released a new interview speaking on the Eye of Agamotto and the stone within. It appears that the stone instead is actually (possibly) the Time Stone, due to his wording. His quote is as follows:

In this film, the Eye is a very important relic that can be quite dangerous if used in the wrong hands, because it has the ability to do any number of things, the most dangerous of which is, it can sort of manipulate probabilities. Which is also another way of saying, ‘screw around with time"

After months of speculating, no official look at Cumberbatch suited up as the good Doctor or the like has been shown to the public on Doctor Strange (besides concept art that was released weeks ago), the first film to go into the magical aspects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Today we received our first official look at 'Doctor Strange". While we've seen concept art before, we have yet to see something like this.

For a refresher for those who have yet to see the first look:

For starters let's note how errily similar the costume is to its comic counterpart, which is unmistakeable from the blue and red in the fabric, and the (iconic) popped collar. The costume is faithful and modern for the MCU.

One notable different in this costume is one thing that has me excited, the necklace. What could it be you might ask? Well lets take a closer look:

In the comics, the necklace Strange wears is called the "Eye of Agamotto" (in the MCU, there is an object called the Orb of Agamotto and it resides in Odin's Trophy Room) and its powers ranged from a variety of things such as playing back recent events, radiate a powerful mystical light that allows Strange to see through all disguises and illusions, transport a group of dozens of beings of all kinds and power levels into another point within a universe, and so on and so forth. I can see why they'd omit those from this incarnation of it.

So what could necklace on Strange be used for? Well one of the powers of the Amagotto is the
ability to give its user certain mystical perceptions into another's soul. That gem in tr necklace looks dead on for the stone seen in Guardians...

I also just wanted to point this out. It appears as though Death is responsible for forging this version of the "Eye of Agamotto". Just my speculation based on this:

Well, that's all I have to say about it. What about you? Do you think it's the Soul Stone? Sound off below!

@DrDoom

I'm willing to bet the time stone will come in Ragnarok. If that film still plays out somewhat like the comics, the time stone could serve to restore what is destroyed.

DerekLake - Exactly! It would make so much sense if they went down that route. Destroy the cycle of Ragnarok with the time stone.

Soul stone on paper seems to make more sense. But if they are going for a more trippy, psychedelic vibe, maybe they are going to use a psuedo-science explanation that involves time travel. Dr Strange might be "borrowing" energy from a future time, or altering the state of matter to what it was in the past, or might be in the future.

Is it far fetched? Absolutely. But Marvel thus far has shown that they like going more Sci-Fi in their Thor franchise, so I wouldn't be surprised. Plus the Soul stone kind of seems like the crowning gem. especially if they are planning on putting Warlock in at some point, the Soul gem seems like it would be gathered in Infinity War pt 1 if any of the stones are.

If it's not the Soul Stone, then its either going to be introduced elsewhere in the film. Strange is going to be hella trippy
